After 3 nights in zadar we caught a bus to Split to jump onto our boat to sail around the Croatian coast for 7 days and nights. After 3 days in Zadar we hadn't heard many Australian accents (there were many Germans there) and were surprised that as soon as we arrived in Split everyone seemed to be australian and jumping on or off boats! It must be the latest Aussie thing to do. We had no idea what to expect of our boat but what we were hoping for was a boat of friendly people who were up for a relaxing trip and maybe a bit of going out at night. We were put on a boat called the Penelopa and the average age was about 21! The bar opened around midday and everyone ... read more

We arrived in the resort town of Pescara after a short bus trip (2-3 hr) over the southern fringes of the alps. Even that glimpse of the mountains was amazing and it made me wonder about the northern regions we will see when we pass over them to get to Tuscany via perugia. We pass many villages carved into the hillsides with ancient churches and crumbling fortresses rambling their way up distant peaks. Pescara is very modern and brash with 'clubs' stretching for miles along the sandy beach which is packed with deck chairs under rows and rows of umberellas - interspersed with beach vollyball and tennis courts. Luckily we were met at the bus station by our friendly host Manuel who drove us to our 'retreat' - the converted monastary of Villa Sabelli. It was ... read more

The second day in Split, I have been out of mood since this morning for no reason, I have already seen many historical places in Split on first day of arrival and Had a walk along the roads Matejuska and Riva. Today, Split is so crowded by a lot of tourists who just arrived from a couple of cruise-liners. On top of that, it is a hot day in Split. There is local bus heading to the direction of former Roman city in Salone. We thought that it might be a better choice to spend the day, far from the crowd at least. Salona also known as Salonae was once the capital of the Roman empire in Dalmatia. Under the Romans, Salona was named as the political centre of the Dalmatia region, reaching its peak under ... read more

I heard about Dubrovnik for the first time back in 1995 when I was traveling through Hungary. Some people I was traveling with were lamenting that this city, the Jewel of the Adriatic, had been severely bombed and damaged during the recent civil war. One of them wanted to go see it anyway, saying that she thought it would still be one of the most beautiful cities of the world, even amidst the rubble. At that time the civil war was still in full swing in many parts of the former Yugoslavia and heading south of Budapest seemed like lunacy, so I declined the invitation to join her. Now, twelve years later, I have finally seen Dubrovnik, and despite much anticipation, my first walk in the city still took my breath away. My joints were ... read more

The Adriatic archipelago is one of the main reasons to come to Croatia. The islands along the coast are similar but at the same time retain their own special character, like siblings. Some, like Krk and Mljet, are covered mostly by a national park, while others, like Pag, are floating Medieval villages. With limited time and money, I could just visit one of them, so I chose the island of Rab. Rab Island has one of the most beautiful cities in the world that is at the same time one of the smallest. The medieval Old City is crowded onto a narrow peninsula on one side of the island, and boasts four church towers that give it a distinctive skyline. As you stroll along the stone path perimeter along the shore, the towers shift in ... read more

After transplanting myself from my swanky digs at Zagreb’s Regent Esplanade to considerably more humble surroundings at the hostel just outside town, I convinced my German roommate, Angelika, to accompany me to the Mirogoj Cemetary. It is called the most beautiful cemetery in Europe by travelers, while Croats smirk in their characteristically dry way that the souls buried there are housed better in death than they ever were in life. We set out to see for ourselves. The cemetery dates back to the 1860s when the little graveyards in Zagreb were getting full, and the government needed a fitting place to bury dignitaries and the nobility (although there are plenty of commoners buried in Miragoj too). They set out to build an ornate, gargantuan memorial for the dead, and they succeeded. Today, a century and ... read more

Well it's been a while between blog entries! I've been out of touch as cruising the Croatian coast & islands for 7 days & then heading to a national park so a little out of touch.... My last blog entry finished with us arriving in Zadar. I was still quite ill from the bout of food poisoning I picked up in Venice and so spend the first day or so recuperating in our hotel in Zadar. After the dive we stayed in in Venice, this one had air con, mini bar, big beds and a balcony with a view of amazing sunsets. It was a palace in comparison! Zadar isn't that well known and to be honest we may not have gone there had the ferry not arrived there from Venice. However, there is heaps ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Korcula June 9th 2007

Yesterday i woke up about 7 an saw us going out of Šipan with the morning sun, really nice. After a long swim break an a petrol stop, it was off to explore the town of Korcula. Again the old town was a bit like Dubrov, built with a wall around it. Saw Marco Polos house from the outside. There is only one main street an they call this the thinking street as it is the only one without stairs. We wandered around a bit an found a cool little cocktail bar on the very top of a little fortress. It was like a ladder getting up to it so they bought the drinks up was a pully system on the outside of the building. After a couple of Pina Coladas later (an meeting 3 ... read more
