HRVATSKI HOSPITALITY PICTURES TO FOLLOW WHENEVER WE GET TO A MODERN COMPUTER!....... After 36 consecutive hours of travel (thats a 6 hour jaunt from Nice to Milan, a 3 hour hop to Venice, a 7 hour overnight scoot to Zagreb, a 5 hour shuffle to Split, concluded by a 4 hour shimmy to Dubrovnik), we were picked up at the bus station by the proprietor of "Rooms Antovnic", a 72 year old Croatian woman named Katie. Still in a daze from our trip, Katie used the few English phrases she knew to manuever us onto the public bus and take us to her establishment just outside the old town city walls. As we were walking toward Katies guesthouse(a charming, signless 150+ year old building that once served as an orphanage) she was quick to point out ... read more

We went into the cute town for breakfast because Piera doesn’t like Nescafe. I don’t blame her, as we had espressos, pastries, and some sun. There was a fish market with cold fresh dead fish and calamari on a clean white marble U-shaped counter inside an old building without refrigerators. Only a sign with the symbol of a fish indicated the business inside the building. We bought sea bass and eight calamari. There was also a fresh market, but with nothing special. We got back on the boat. Sailed and I slept. I slept all day long. I couldn’t help it either, I’ve lost all track of time, my only schedule is when we eat, or are moving. We all move about the boat, interacting or making our own entertainment. I like reading and writing, but ... read more

We set sail from the small bay to visit more islands. Anchored in a blue bay with a small beach and only a handful of houses, we stopped for lunch after taking in 2-3 hours of sun. Lunch and brief swimming and then back to resting. But the anchor lost its grip on the sea floor and we drifted. Suddenly the waves began to rock the boat and we all sat in the back deck holding on so as not to be thrown off. Sara wanted to go sit on the trampoline and almost had me convinced. But with a full stomach I couldn’t talk myself into the inevitable sea sickness it would cause, so we didn’t go. Thank goodness because it got rougher until we set up the sails. I had no idea that the ... read more

Arrived this morning on time despite the hour + delay. Everyone in chairs slept miserably, shifting from one uncomfortable position to the next. Although people were relieved to arrive as scheduled I was a bit disappointed. Completely unfamiliar with the country, language, exchange rate, location of my arrival in relation to the port I need to be at in a few hours. So I sat at the Port cafe and oriented myself according to logic and observation. The coffee sharpened my thoughts and the brioche gave me the boost to get on and explore. With a canvas military style duffel bag and my backpack both weighing on me I walked at a slow snail pace. Admired and took in the architecture, it is port like, duh, and mixed with old and new buildings. I walked through ... read more

August 4, 2007 Croatia - A Vacation from our Vacation!! After 6 weeks of travel we were getting weary. We needed a vacation from our vacation. Aunt Debbie has a co-worker, Srjan, who owns a charming B&B in Makarska, Croatia on the Dalmatian coast. We were able to find a week that he had free to spend on the beach. It couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. After we left Plitvice National Park we headed for Split, Croatia. It was a short drive and we had gotten into the whole routine…arrive in town…park the car…get a map...orient to the town…find lodging… have fun! Well….that was June and July and now it was August in Europe when pretty much everyone in France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Croatia, Austria, and Great Britain go on vacation. Split ... read more

It seems like the last week was destined to be one of unusual occurances.......mostly due to our being a bit over-relaxed in holiday mode I guess. These events started last Saturday when Luke went off to the shop in Sucuraj to buy a new pack of cards (carrying the old ones to make sure he got the right variety). Five minutes later a very drenched (read drowned rat) Luke walks in the door clutching a 20 Kuna note in one hand and a very wet pack of cards in the other declaring 'they don't have any cards'!! What happened we asked.........seems the inevitable happened and he slipped on the edge of the Harbour wall and took a dive. Poor kid...a little bruised but basically OK and lucky he did not crack his head on the way ... read more

First of all a quick aside: my camera broke in Slovenia so none of the usual arty photography attempts for the next two blogs. I have to thank Dawn and Sara for these pictures. Right, I first heard about Pag Island a few years ago. A party island that not too many people know about, especially not in the UK, sounded very appealing. I expected it would be a bit like Ios, the Greek party island, that again very few Brits have heard of seeing as no package tour operators go there. It isn’t like Ios. There aren’t the packed little bars and cobbled squares full of dancing backpackers. And the guidebook writers that make comparisons between Pag and Ibiza have obviously never been to Ibiza. To be brutally honest, Pag is crap. Well that’s not ... read more

Tonight is, sadly, my last night in Croatia. I'm taking an 8 hour bus ride to Zadar tomorrow to fly to London, where I'll be for a few days before heading home. This trip has gone way too fast! An update on the last few days before I reflect on the last few weeks: I was in Hvar before this, which is an island right off of Split. It was very beautiful and a lot of fun, but pretty resorty. 2 days was enough there, although I would definitely go back with friends. The weather has been soooo hot for the last week or so, I think every night in Split and Hvar I literally could not cool down unless I was in the water, it made it pretty difficult to sleep. Luckily there seems to ... read more
