Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Brac October 18th 2007

Sarah and I are now on an island called Brac in a town named Bol, there is a beach of sorts but there is no sand. We found a hotel that is almost in our budget (it is if we dont indulge in other things such as wine, which we actually have been... , and is three times cheaper than it is in tourist season), comes with breakfast and dinner and we have taken a break for 3 days to rest and relax in luxury. We had massages the other day and have enjoyed having no new bug bites while in the rooms (we had a couple in Zadar and Split that have still not dissapeared). We are also both more tanned then when we got here, and it is easy to watch the planes fly ... read more

Since Cadaques in Spain, our journey has turned to the east, and towards the distant city of Istanbul... Before leaving Spain we went to the bizarre and fascinating Dali Museum in Figures, designed by the man himself. It was replete with sexual imagery, clever visual tricks (a room with a sofa and fireplace becomes a glamorous woman's head) and giant sureal statues. Even the building was mental, lined with giant eggs. Cool. We drove back into Spain and the town of Carcassone. The town has a fascinating history. The Romans built a huge wall here in the 3rd century AD which is still standing. It has had another enormous wall with towers added in the centuries since by first the Cathars and then the kingdom of France. The town on the hill is therefore surrounded by ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik October 17th 2007

We spent 23 relaxing days in Croatia. First stop, the tiny village of Beli on the island of Cres. The perfect escape from civilization. Croatia had just entered the "off season", but it was totally on for us! We stayed in the idyllic Tramontana Pension, where our two lovely hostesses, Nina and Anna, served us nightly meals and served us cold beer. Our only choices were "meats, fich, or squids", all fresh and local...the way we should all eat! We were the only ones staying in the pension, so Dave was able to beat his tabla to his heart's content. We rented out the only apartment, which was great as it had a kitchen. We gathered groceries in the nearby Cres Town, and we were set. The best thing about Beli were the abundant hiking trails ... read more

At the national park a lady came up to us and was trying to ask us something but had bad english, Sarah hears her mumble something and Sarah asks her if she is Croatian, she is not she is french; Sarah sasy "Je suis parle francais" or something of the sort and they start chatting away, she was happy to get to use her french. From the national park we went to Zadar. We spent most of our time in Zadar walking around old town which is pretty awesome, its and old fortress and we walked up a big tower in the middle and had a great view (though had spagetti legs afterwards). Everywhere here has roman ruins and towers and sailboats. At every city on the coast we have been I have seen optis and ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Slavonia » Osijek October 13th 2007

I got a ride back to Slavonski Brod this morning with Vesna. It was a bright day with a crisp breeze, perfect for strolling through the vineyards. I wished I had another day to spend there but I was keen to move on. Vesnja arrived in a dark suit. She on her way to a funeral in Slavonski Brod and I felt a little guilty for bumming a ride. We listened to a radio program about an international cooking competition that a Croatian chef had just won which, frankly, shocked the hell out of me. I felt a little uncomfortable alone in the car with her. She had a way, like so many other Croatian women, of looking at me like she didn’t trust me. Like she could see right through any smiling bullshit I gave ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Opatija October 13th 2007

We got to Opatija (ij is pronounced iy). And besides a little bit of sand in a park the whole thing is hotels and concrete, and aside from some hicking there its pretty drab. We stayed for two nights and got our sleep schedules on a good track (going to bed early and getting up at or before 9), which will be way better for seeing sights and meeting bus schedules. Went to a national park full of lakes, which was gorgous and I hope i took some good photoes (though it was overcast). Out of time, more later Cheers, Ian... read more

Read this article on EuropeUpClose at http://www.europeupclose.com/in-search-of-croatia%e2%80%99s-first-wine-hotel/ The bus driver pulled over on the side of a long road. We hadn’t passed anything that looked alive in the past fifteen minutes. I could see nothing but empty vineyards and empty houses ahead. He looked at me through the rear view mirror to tell me it was my stop. I bumped several unsuspecting Croatian ladies with my backpack as I exited the bus, and it pulled away. Outside, a cold drizzle was just starting to make the situation even less pleasant. I was on my way to Croatia’s first wine hotel. It was located in Brodski Stupnik, a small town in the middle of Slavonia. In many books about the Balkans, authors have described their fabulous train journeys across this region in eastern Croatia, so I was ... read more

Hello from a pub in Slavonski Brod where I feel a little sad (as in S.A.D, Seasonal Affected Disorder ... the weather in this town sucks!). But I’m a little exhilirated because I think I’m nearing a breakthrough of sorts of my article, plus this pub is playing great English music. So, last night I enjoyed my lasagne, then decided to invoke my ‘Don’t do something just to tell others you did it” rule, and I went home rather than going for another drink. I watched half of the God-awful movie “Money Train”, and was surprised when I woke up a few hours later and realized I’d fallen asleep. I had a nice sleep, dreamt about marrying David and I’m starting to warm to the idea. This morning, I left the room at 10am (left ... read more
