Yesterday was our last full day in Bled, so, not to waste any of it despite the showery rain and distant thunder, we headed off to the dino park just outside Bled. We'd seen it three years ago and decided it looked naff enough to visit when we first bought Seth. On the way there, the weather worsened and Seth fell asleep so.... We both feel asleep too once we had parked up. Waking from our respective naps it was clear that the weather was not just a bit rainy, it was armageddon. Trying to persuade Seth that the dinosaurs would be better in the sun was just not working (lots of snot, many tears) so we donned coats and braved it in true British style. The woman running the place looked gobsmacked to see anyone. ... read more

Our next stop turned in to a longer one as we stayed five nights near the city of Split. What kept here this long was a combination of an interesting place to visit, great stores for provisioning and two days of storms moving through. We had a great hook and even met some people at anchor here so we were not in a rush. We arrived at the anchorage before noon so it gave us time that first day to take the dinghy ashore and get acquainted with the town and what it has to offer. We have the Rick Steves Croatia guidebook and we already had a bit of information on what we would be seeing and figured that the next day we would follow his walking tour. While walking around there were plenty of ... read more

When we left the marina of Korcula, we had great views of the walled city that we just visited. You can see how well defended the town was with its fortifications with the entire town within its borders. After being in the marina we figured we would anchor out tonight. Bob found a great little bay to do that in on the island of Scedro. We anchored in a little deeper water than we would have liked but it still wasn’t bad at 34 feet as we thankfully have plenty of chain on our anchor. It wasn’t crowded, the water was nice and clear and we had a great time snorkeling. A good spot to overnight. The next day we made a 3 ½ hour move to an island near the town of Hvar that we ... read more

Republika Hrvatska, like it’s called in Croatian, is one of my favourite countries in Europe. It was my third visit to the country, the first two being in 2007 and 2013. Also this visit was just to catch up with friends, in this case with Viktor and Melita who I met in 2007 when working on a campsite in Rovinj, Istria peninsula. After we met the second time in 2013 we had a deal that we won't wait another 6 years to so see each other again and this visit happened after 4 years (we'll see when the next one will happen, now that I'm writing it's already been 2 years). I arrived at Zagreb airport where Niko, their son, had a sign with my name written on it. So cool!! Zagreb is the capital and ... read more

Dubrovnik is a Southern Croatian city by the Adriatic Sea, and for a long time, it was just an old distinctive seaside paradise. Today, it is a glorious destination with a lot of vibrancy coupled with the flocking of visitors who are marveled by its preserved heritage and architecture. Without a doubt, its glorified architecture caught the eye of the producers of one of the most popular TV shows for the last decade or so - Game of Thrones. It fitted perfectly with their ideal description of a city set in a medieval fantasy period. Although there were a few special-effects edits, it must be said that a large portion of the filming perfectly utilized the old town's unique buildings as filming locations. The show has a cult following and most of the avid viewers were ... read more

We were coming to the end of our time in Italy and knew we would be crossing the Ionian Sea to Croatia soon; it all depended on the weather. Every day Bob checks the weather usually a couple times per day after it is updated. We had two options - either leave Trani and head further north on the Italian coast to Vieste and use that as a jumping off point OR go directly from Trani depending on the weather. Depending on which we chose it would be either a 14 or 18 hour crossing. We always want to enter a new port during daylight so our departure time would also be dependent on which plan we went with. When leaving Italy there are some official things that need to be done- one is to have ... read more

And so Croatia via a quick walk around Porto Montenegro, a short cut by ferry & an hour crossing the borders out of Montenegro & into Croatia, not bad. We got to Dubrovnik, our first port of call and checked into our Airbnb before wandering down into the magnificent old town. Pretty busy but after taking in the sights we looked for something to eat and came across a band playing some old standards and sat down to watch them. Great players and the lead was a guy that looked like one of the chuckle brothers! As is our wont we did the walking tour on our first morning in Dubrovnik- pretty good it was too - Freetour.com Clearly there were a lot of Game of Thrones references including Black water bay (colourina bay) and the ... read more

For our last day we visited Krka National Park, not far south of Zadar. It was getting hot as we headed out & it only got hotter over the day. We started off visiting Skradinski Bu, hiking 850m down to the river then around the boardwalks. LOTS of tour groups moving slowly & taking up all the space making it hard to weave our way through.. The waterfalls were very pretty though. We had a short swim at Skradinski buk which was very welcome as the temperature had climbed into the 30s. We got the bus back up to the car park instead of hiking the steep stony path, I'm not sure it was faster but at least it had air con! There was a bit of a bus jam getting out, but luckily our bus ... read more

Up early & walked over the seawards jetty to get our boat tour of Kornati National Park with Mikado tours. We were a group of 20 adults & a couple of young kids (baby & 3 year old) which was a good number for the size of the boat. We set off out to the islands with a 2h45 ride to the first stop, we were given coffee & offered Rakija but we decided it was too early for that! This was followed by breakfast of cheese or cheese & ham sandwiches. After a couple of hours we reached Kornati National Park & the boat went around several islands before our first stop was Our Lady of Tarac church a small 17th century church built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica from the 6th ... read more

First stop today was the Bear Refugein Kuterevo! We had a short tour from one of their volunteers who showed us the three young bears there Marko Kralj (7 years), Mlada Gora and Mlad Dol (both 9 years) & also a new comer, a 7 month old cub who had just arrived from a zoo - literally, he was still in his crate when we arrived! Very cute, but sadly we are not allowed to share his photos. She had to go an help with the cub but pointed us towards further enclosures where the big bears are! We only say two of them - one of them very close! - but apparently there are five bears in there. We also heard a bit about the ethos of the place, very much a back to nature ... read more
