20.08.2019. This morning we said farewell to Ema, our gorgeous host in Split, who, as promised, walked us to the ferry terminal for our trip across to Hvar Island, a journey of one hour. We were greeted on Hvar by a representative from our hotel who organised us and our luggage to be delivered there forthwith! We settled in and at about 5.00pm took off on a short and pleasant walk into the main square for drinks and dinner. Our hotel is pretty good with a pool and bar area, plenty to choose from in the way of meals but we chose to wander into the square to eat and enjoy the atmosphere. The staff are young, friendly and helpful, the hotel facilities excellent. Hvar has a gorgeous port, filled with many boats and some very ... read more

17.08.2019. Our last day in Zagreb started at about 5.45 - early breakfast, final check we’ve got everything and a short walk to wait for our 8.00am bus that will take us to Split via Plivitce Lakes for a promised four hour or more walking tour. Great, we said, piece of cake, we said, stroll around the lakes, see the waterfalls, get on the bus, drive into Split, book into digs...can’t wait! We arrived in Rastoke for a walk around the village, a pit stop for food and drinks and then on to the Lakes, arriving at about midday. The joint was packed, and I mean packed! We couldn’t move. We were advised to visit the facilities as there won’t be any on the walk for four hours or more...so off we set on a 20 ... read more

15.08.2019. Last night, after booking into our lovely hotel, we found the Bulldog Bar just a few short steps from the hotel and enjoyed a few drinks and dinner and bumped into four Aussies who we accused of being so loud we could hear them six feet away! They laughed and told us they were from Victoria - well, there you go! They, like us, we’re quite chuffed to hear an Aussie accent after so many weeks away. It’s funny, John and I sit amongst the crowds, drink, eat, chat and enjoy and everyone is speaking in different languages - so when we hear English being spoken, it’s quite comforting in a way. John and I also seem to be the only two people anywhere not bent over their mobile phones whilst out and about! At ... read more

Our day started at 4.30am, hotel kindly organised a breakfast bag for us, taxi was early and took us to the train station for our trip to Zagreb on the 6.40am train, for a six hour journey. He dropped us at what we thought was a dilapidated building in need of pulling down. No, this is the train station! We went into the waiting room, which stunk! Oh, that’s why - a bunch of deros were sleeping on the seats and a few using the outside grounds for...well, you know! A man indicated we move down some stairs and we kept an eye on the signage until finally our platform number came up. We boarded, and luckily for us our compartment had three young adults and we chatted to them for a while. After some hours ... read more

I have a full day in Zagreb today plus all tomorrow morning, before catching a lunchtime train to Ljubljana, and I am looking forward to exploring this city. My only fix point today is meeting Vlatka at 5pm. She is the local guide we use in Zagreb, and from our email exchange she seems delightful . She has kindly agreed to meet me in the hotel lobby so she can explain how she runs our tours. After a great breakfast I head off to the main square, armed with a city map, courtesy of my hotel. I want to orientate myself, and try to walk as much of the city centre as I can. It is a much smaller city than Budapest. During my own ramble I actually get to see a great deal of the ... read more

After all the anchoring we have been doing we figured it was time to head into a marina for a few days as there are just some things easier when plugged into power. It was working out well as we had been working our way up the coast of Croatia toward the city of Zadar. We had heard that Marina Preko on a nearby island wasn't too expensive (and even gives a discount for Cruising Association members!) so contacted them and they had an opening for the number of days we wanted to stay. We knew we could catch a ferry from here over to the mainland and the city of Zadar. Only stipulation we were given by the marina was to not arrive before 1PM as that was check out time and they would then ... read more

Tuesday:plan. Get up, go to get a boat to Birjuni, have a nice day, go back to the house and maybe out for tea. The reality: up at the crack of dawn (ish) to go to the garage, chauffeured by lozz who really had no plans for this in his holiday. Told by the garage man that nope, not a chance of looking at the car (just looking at it, not even mending it) till Thursday. So we collected some stuff and sulked our way to the (very very hot) beach at Rovinj. Seth had a great time (loudly pointing out that a chubby preteen boy had boobies was perhaps the highlight though). We sulked our way through (having a few words with ourselves about being so grumpy in such a lovely place). Seth paddled, had ... read more

Our next stop was at anchor in a well protected bay at the village of Vinisce. We had heard from others that it had God holding with the bonus of have a couple of small grocery stores and a bus that goes to the nearby town of Trogir. When we went to shore very conveniently right across the road there was a sign for the tourist information office. They had a bus schedule to Trogir already printed up to hand out so think it must be a common question for them. We had thought of going to Trogir when we left Split but decided to bypass it to head a little farther up the coast. This works out well in that we have a safe place for the boat and we can get to Trogir via ... read more

I learnt a very lot today.... First off I learnt what the Croatian for 'sour cream' is. Sadly it was only after having bought two pots of it at the shop yesterday, put a load on my cereal and eaten a bit that I thought that checking the translation would be good as it wasn't really like yoghurt! In all fairness it was really nice but I'm guessing not particularly healthy! I also learnt that health and safety is not even an afterthought for Croatians. Given the limited time spent at Slovenia's number one dinopark, we decided to forego the beach in the heat and try Croatia's number one dinopark. Oh my....... In all fairness the dinosaurs weren't bad, no noise so Seth was happy, and lots of them all dotted around but the rides.... The ... read more

Monday..... Plan: get up, go to Pula, park near aquarium, see fish in a fort, have lunch, have a gentle drive to Rovinj, meet a friend for a cuppa, leave, go home via supermarket, brother would arrive, have tea, maybe have a dip in the pool, Seth to bed at 7 and a nice drink on the terrace. Actual...... Got up and left probably later than intended but hey ho Got to Pula for eleven or so and oh my god. Not only could we not park anywhere near the aquarium (despite there being lots of spaces the men wouldn't let us in) we couldn't park on anything resembling a car park. Eventually we parked slightly up a grassy hill in a wooded area (with all the rest of the world, no one was anywhere else ... read more
