There was a time when I was happy to touch down in a country with only a pack full of dirty clothes, a box full of wine, a smile and a willingness to sleep on the street. I would trust in the kindness of strangers and usually find myself in cheap, substandard accommodation. This style of travelling generally made for good stories, as it led to nights in mud huts, brothels and scary guesthouses; it also managed to get me onto a hijacked bus, get beat up in a bar in Singapore’s little India and be felt up by a Christian Fundamentalist on Australia’s East coast. Somewhere along the line I changed my ways and became obsessed with the most intricate details of my next trip. When I am not travelling I am planning to travel; ... read more

Saturday the 29th of March Goodbye to Germany and Hello to Croatia Well after a very memorable night in the home of Martin and Gisela it was time to get packing and get going off to Cologne. Cologne is a large city about 400 klms north, north west of Nurnberg and we had booked train tickets to get there from Nurnberg. The reason we are going to Cologne is that we had found relatively cheap airline tickets on the net from Cologne to Dubrovnik; in fact they were about a third of the next best price we could get from any other airline. We knew nothing about the airline called German wings except they started their flights very early, our flight out was at 5.45am!! Of interest was that we were advised that check ins commenced ... read more

Howdy Y'all, So I'm in Croatia, teaching at the American College of Management and Technology, in Dubrovnik. I've been here since the 14th of March, I am still in the process of settling in and finding a home for everthing in my apt. The location of my apt, is perfect I am a 15-20 min walk from School, old town is only another few minutes from there. I have 2 grocery stores less than 5 minutes Ston and Moli Ston, they produce the "best" oysters in the world, according to all of the locals. They were pretty darn goodand really don't care for raw oysters. Also it is the home to the 2nd longest wall in the world. Ok enough talking here are the pix. Ted... read more

Our bus to Dubrovnik left Kotor at eight thirty and surprisingly we managed to get up for it. The bus was comfortable enough but we had a little bit of agro at the border. At the checkpoint to leave Montenegro there was a general shout down the bus, we heard something "Anglaiski" and we were beckoned off the bus. We were told to get our backpacks and follow the border guard into a room. They asked us where we had come from, where we were going and purpose of visit (as if our backpacks and stamps in our passports didn't spell it out.) They asked to see further I.D from Rob and then proceeded to ask him questions about his job, where he went to university etc. They looked at each other and then passed us ... read more

So we spent the last couple days in Dubrovnik, the city is gorgeous but its sad that instead of the buisy hubub of markets and shipbuilding and things that the city used to take part in it is now only used as a tourist trap of sorts. Filled with stores selling crappy jewelery and overpriced walking tours, hotels, and bottels of wine. It was nice to see the old city with its walls and buildings and history, but I had the feeling of being herded like cattle thru the city. Im also a little bitter because we bought a box of lindor chocolates, for about as much as we would normally spend on a meal, and they had gone hard and white, though were before the best before date (by three days); we tried to take ... read more

When looking at most holiday brochures I cynically assume that they’ve had the photoshop face lift. The sea has been made that bit more sparking blue, the ugly building site has been conveniently erased and the gravel beach has suddenly become Barbados. However, I’m pleased to say that Dubrovnik certainly doesn’t need such cosmetic enhancements. We arrived to a perfect sunny day that was more June than October. The coast line reveled many pretty villages of white washed buildings with terracotta tiled roofs. Dubrovnik itself has a fairy tale quality with fortress walls that encircle the town and harbor like protective arms. Colorful fishing boats bob in the bay and cobbled streets twist and turn with lazy cats asleep in every door way. But such a picture perfect paradise hasn’t gone unnoticed by the tourist hoards. ... read more

Wow, it was almost 2 weeks ago now that we made it to Dubrovnik, Croatia that I can't really remember too much of it. It was a long drive, about 8 hours with a short stop in Zagreb (the capital). In Zagreb we ate dinner and checked out a pub named Tolkien's House, which of course as you may guess was decorated in mainly a Lord of the Rings theme and shots named after places and characters from the story too. But from there we then continued on our way south to Dubrovnik through windy coastal roads with beautiful views in the night until we made it to our destination at nearly 2AM. we spent the next day here, walking mostly and taking numerous photos of the glorious castle walls that surround the town and are ... read more

So at the end of our 7 hour bus trip and what not, we finally arrived at the Old Town in Dubrovnik. Our first task was to find our room we were staying in. Well it wasn't much of a task but getting the owner to stop talking was! Nah, in all seriousness the guy was really interesting to talk to, he'd had a really interesting life. But after 7 hours on a bus without a toilet - we had other things on our minds!! This guy deserves a sentence or two. He had been a soldier for the Yugoslav army from when he was real young. His job was to shoot at NATO (if and when they ever arrived) from the island of Vis. He also told us this lovely little story about how he ... read more
