I have been an SFT for one month now. SFT being the acronym I invented for Solo Female Traveler, or learning to deal with the world by yourself. With this new status, different cautions must be heeded, and new opportunities arise. On my first morning traveling independently, I was offered a ride to my hostel, encouragement to travel, and sugar-powdered cookies. I would like to think this would happen in any traveling situation, but traveling as a solo female makes people percieve you differently. SFTs are more vulnerable because of their independent status. They are more open to the generosity of others, but are also more easily subjected to unwanted attention. Some SFT´s remedy this by eliminating male contact completely, but by eliminating all contact with males, you essentially eliminate half of the potential people ... read more

This update will be real short, mostly pictures. I just don't want to mix countries in my blogs but I stayed less than 24 hours in Croatia. But still, Dubrovnik is quite an amazing city. I arrived in Dubrovnik after dark from Montenegro and after being assaulted by the grannies I picked the first one that lowered her price to something reasonable and followed her to a room which I shared with a japanese right in front of the bus station. I walked all the way to Dubrovnik Old Town. I had some good pizza and walked around a bit before settling to an irish pub. But it was a bit too early so the atmosphere wasn't great so after just one beer I left. Internet access was 4 euro an hour and I didn't feel ... read more

It's been a quick few weeks, after racing through Serbia and Montenegro (see previous "amended" blog) I caught up with Tans and Andy in Dubrovnik. they've been working in France for the last few months and, as it turns out, are currently on a whirlwind trip of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Quite a contrast to my "keep it slow and warm" philosophy. Luckily we were both flexible and had no big ideas.. i.e. no short-term plans or long-term cash :) This time of year on the Croatian coast is a real low point in their tourist season - the last campground closed two days after we left, and all "regular" tourist services were on completely irregular timetables. It was great, there were still enough people around to make it interesting, the make believe timetables put paid ... read more

Matt: Don’t you find it annoying when you go out for a drink with a few mates and the conversation turns to something you can’t contribute to? Whether it is a movie you haven’t been to, a song you haven’t heard or a current event that you haven’t read up on, I always find myself sitting back, sighing obviously and waiting for the conversation to turn to something a little more to my tastes (like Brangelina or Lost or Daniel Craig). Over the past year for Ed and me, two subjects have stood out as complete tune-outs: the Ashes (I try, but I just don’t get it) and Croatia. Croatia is THE destination in Europe at the moment. Actually - more specifically - Croatia is THE destination in Europe amongst our circle of friends at the ... read more

Pizza for breaky, the pizzas are huge; I ate less than a quarter of mine. The knives are rubbish; they should give you a small roller cutter similar to what is used to slice pizzas. Anyone seen such a thing at a restaurant? Nice meal at the water side restaurant cannot remember the name, down the steps next to the bus stop and follow it around. If you have had enough of seafood, then go for the Fillet steak it is superb, the Dalmatian rib steak on the other hand is horrible. ... read more

Greetings all, about ten days ago I got off the bus from Mostar. On Croatia's South Eastern it is on a thin slice of land. Bosnia's mountainous triangle of a country crutching it up against the Adriatic coast. Montenegro is unknown to many but rests just a few kilometers away from the »Pearl of the Adriatic«. More commonly known as Dubrovnik. I was immediately confronted by elderly ladies touting a bedroom in their houses. A great thing about Croatia is the touts that await you at the bus stations. In certain countries in the world the touts usually range from cheating, lying, stealing bastards, to those who wont leave you alone for five minutes peace and sees you as their best mate ever. In Croatia if the tout has grey hair and chainsmokes you can generally ... read more

We needed to find accommodation this time; the girls had already arranged theirs for the next few days. Lapad is out the way for either the bus station in the morning or the old town night life. So we just go with some guy who had an Audi, the girls were happy to get a lift in a nice car for once; the guy thought he was getting four people for his two spare rooms, he was not happy. The restaurant by the old town marina is one of Jules' favorites, as its cheap, has great views and the staff are very friendly. I had the "Small Fried Fish" again. 4 liters of wine later we were ready for a good night out at the Fresh bar. Serves cocktails and like a gallon of beer in ... read more

You may be aware Dubrovnik has an old town surrounded by a wall that you can walk along, stopping and taking in the views. It takes a while and we'd all done it before so we didn't bother, but if it’s not too hot you may as well. You can get drinks from old women along the way, she even wrote out a receipt for a bottle of Sprite. “Crazy woman from the wall” we called her, maybe a shorter name would have been better but we didn’t use it much. Found a cafe to do a bit of people watching, I have a feeling there may be a lot of that over the next 2 weeks. Have done all the touristy stuff last year so it was time for beer, we go in search of ... read more

Even though I have a stonking headache after last night in London, we'll just call that a Friday night out. 3.5 hours delay at the airport means brushing up on our Daytona skills, we may need these later. In my following posts some names will have been changed to protect the guilty, but the blurry photos are from the alcohol shakes. Skip ahead to us arriving in Lapad where we had a tiny room booked for the first 2 nights, Villa Micika. We had a nice meal down by the sea, I had some seafood, cannot remember what, it will come back to me, nice though. It was 1am by the time Roland had joined us and we needed beer, we stumbled across a bar, maybe the only one open and could only fit 8 people ... read more

Geo: 42.858, 17.67Funny this morning at breakfast ... heard a girl talk about the Lonely Planet guides saying that they sucked. She should try the Let's Go guides! Then she'll know what crappy guides are all about!I am really excited this morning ... I am supposed to meet Emilie and Aude at the Pile Gate! I guess they had some difficulties at their hostel and broke the key in their door. Apparently they were quite worried that they would be late and that I would not wait around for them. Ahhh ... so nice to be wanted :)We walked around the old town. It's not quite as nice in the daytime, especially with all the tour groups milling about. Irritating ... but it's alright because as soon as it hits 4 PM, they all clear out ... read more
