Arrived in Bulgaria in the middle of the night, (Country #52) and had a bad sleep so when my alarm went off I felt like I had to swim to the surface of my consciousness just to turn my alarm clock off. Which for those of you who know - I am one of those annoying morning people so I really struggled with that. I fell asleep on route (we left at 08:30) as we had a one hour drive outside of Vidin (where we were docked), to head to the town of Belogradchik (pronounced like it looks - belo-grad-chik) We got to have a quick stop after our drive for coffee and some traditional snacks. We had a sweet and savory treat; the sweet was super yummy, like a tiny rolled cookie with light pastry ... read more

Tryavna, un oras renascentist in Bulgaria centrala.

UNMIK, the UN Mission in Kosovo, runs these weekend tours to various places in the region. I signed up for the one for Bansko, Bulgaria - a ski resort town. I don't ski, but there is plenty of stuff to do in Bansko anyway. We left Pristina at around 3:50pm by bu s. I tried taking pictures of the beautiful mountains of Kosovo, but it was through the bus window so they're not very good. WEhad no problems on the border to Macedonia. However, on the border to Bulgaria, we wound up having to wait for a very long time to get through. It felt like hours, but I don't really know how long it was. Then it was snowing heavily, so we had to drive really slow. About 18 km away from Bansko, we became ... read more

So, I wound up having a nice day on Sunday. I was not perfectly better, but I was good enough to enjoy more of the city. I had coffee in the morning, and some bread, so not the sumptious breakfast of the previous day in an effort to help with my stomach complaint. It worked, so I went back to the main street and turned the opposite way than I had before. I saw many interesting shops, which I took pictures of, and did more shopping. However, when I got near the end of the street, I found a museum dedicated to a Bulgarian Renaissance thinker and an Orthodox church from the same time period. I went to the museum, and it was absolutely deserted except for me and the guy running it - it was ... read more

The train ride from Athens to Thessaloniki was one of little enjoyment. I was so damn tired by the time it left, I thought I was going to be able to get a good night’s sleep on the train. This, unfortunately for me, could not have been further from the truth. I boarded with no issues, found my seat and settled in. For some reason, in their infinite wisdom, they left the lights blaring all night. There was no respite, and to make matters worse, the seats were just about as uncomfortable as you could imagine. So I arrived in Thessaloniki at 6 o’clock the next morning severely sleep deprived. Instead of trying to figure out which bus to take to the hostel I just walked the distance instead. I knew the hostel probably wouldn’t have ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Smolyan Province October 23rd 2014

This summer me and my brother decided to go to Bulgaria, do small hikes through the Rhodope Mountains and visit the little villages in the area. We started our hike in Pamporovo, which in the winter is a famous ski spot, to the Smolyan Lakes. There we went up to the Canyon of Waterfalls, which i highly recommend if you are in the area. From the canyons we went to Shiroka Laka, amazing little folklore village that would satisfy any budding travel photographer. Another little village I was impressed by was Zlatograd, which translates to Goldentown. It’s only 2km from the border with Greece and is famous for it’s history as being a trade town in the olden times. Just make sure you go to the central coffee shop, where they offer a ‘Spun Coffee’, which ... read more

It was the tallest group of boys I had ever seen. Gangly guys; More neck than head; Their big Adam's apples nervously Yo-Yo-ing between chin and sternum. They looked like first time flyers. We were leaving Istanbul for Bulgaria. We were on one of those long accordion buses that jet-way anemic airports utilize to ferry passengers to planes. The young men were members of the Iranian National basketball team on their way to Sofia for a game. Half of them looked as if they were straight off the farm. Probably recruited by some government emissary whose sole task was to find Iran's tallest men; athletic talents be damned. On the plane, their heads rested atop their knees. I'll never complain about legroom again. We arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria. As we landed I noted abandoned military aircraft ... read more

We are finally leaving Europe behind after seven weeks of some great experiences and support from a wide collection of old and new friends. Sofia was our final destination in Europe, where we had been invited to stay by Iva, who I had last seen at Cambridge in 1982. Not for the first time my retired PhD supervisor, Tony Kirby, had come up trumps and put us in touch after just a few days of enquiries. I had written to Iva explaining about our trip and immediately got an invitation to stay. We could not miss that opportunity and made sure we cut back to Sofia from Ruse before heading for Turkey and Asia. I have to say on the bus to Sofia I was a little nervous. The same type of feeling you get when ... read more

10th August Very peaceful nights sleep in the hotel in Xanthi. 4 of us made breakfast before 10 and were still eating when it closed at 10.30. Then we drove into and through Kavala and found a lovely beach - no wind today so the sea is unbelievably flat. Hot though - 30 something so the sea is refreshingly cool. Filled up with petrol before getting to the beach and the guy filling the tank graduated from Southampton the same year as Christopher. Nice beach, lovely warm sea, massive jellyfish :) just the one. Hopefully got some good pictures with the underwater camera. Should have brought the GoPro though as that takes good pictures underwater I believe. Next stop a bite to eat in a cool Taverna? We got back in the car and travelled a ... read more
