Geo: 42.7105, 23.3238I slept well last night, despite the disco or party or whatever it was nearby that had a continuous boom-boom-boom bass-y sort of noise. Actually, it sounded more like the noise an MRI machine makes than musical bass but, as there was singing too, I assume there wasn't some sort of mass imaging festival going on.The shower was decent. Even the Worst Hairdryer in the World™ wasn't so bad!Ham and cheese croissant and a ginormous mocha at Costa down the road, then a stroll over to the park where the monument to the Soviet (not Russian) Army is. Climbed up the stairs to the base of the column and felt really quite high up, even though I wasn't. Looking back the way I came, there's a very large paved area leading nearly back to ... read more

Geo: 42.7105, 23.3238My flight was at 1:43, so naturally we left the house at 10:35 (well, it is the Friday of Labor Day weekend!) and got to SeaTac just after 11:00. My flight was booked through KLM, but Delta operates the flights out of Seattle to Amsterdam. Bag drop was a little chaotic and took maybe 15 minutes, but then I discovered that I'd been selected for TSA Pre-Check, which meant that I could just march right up to the conveyor belt, plop my carry-on down, and go through the scanner. No taking out my liquids or laptop; no taking off my shoes and sweater. Pretty slick! I wonder how I can get selected every time I fly. (I was actually behind three JAL flight crew. It was like this was their first time through security. ... read more

Sometimes life at home overtakes you and the last trip I took is now months away in July and I didn't get round to writing up my blog on Sofia.. so I better get it done before the next trip in 2 weeks or I really will be lagging behind. I wrote about the intercity buses ( if you can call them that) in my previous blog and this time the vehicle was a coach ... getting tickets can be a bit daunting with the Cyrillic script and nobody who speaks English but with a few smiles and a calendar handy you can make yourself understood and at least numerals are the same. You are usually given a ticket with the number of the bus stop at the bus station and your seat number too. By ... read more

Wake up, breakfast, pick up shore passes, onto bus. Hmm, here we go again. Today we have a half day tour visiting the town of Vidin and Belogradchik. We head into the countryside to Belograchik first. This place looks very run down. Lots of deserted factories, etc. in the towns and countryside. Very poor looking country. We get closer to the town and we get a great view from the road in. Huge rock outcrops in some weird looking shapes, the rabbit eating some cabbage, the kissing girls, etc. finally get to the fortress which is built on these rocks. Off we go, we had been told it will be a tough walk. Not wrong. Cobblestones, rock paths then steps. Some of the steps are well formed, others are stones that have worn in lots of ... read more

Plovdiv - 2nd-4th August 2015 My trip into Bulgaria began on a high note after finally, my last hotel in Istanbul found a loaf of gluten free bread. So after loads of bread and jam for breakfast followed by some make shift cheese and tomato sandwiches for the 9 hour journey ahead of me, I was all set. The scenery was lovely with a reminscence of home after passing many bright yellow fields, only this time, the yellow was from Sunflowers rather than Rapeseed. The expanse of flat fields were edged with distant mountain ranges that appeared slightly hazy in the heat. It was also nice to have an uneventful border crossing. :) It was about 4pm when I arrived at my hotel. Wow I thought, had I really booked this place for the cheap price ... read more

We decided to split the Bucharest - Istanbul journey up a little so we took a night off Bucharest to spend "somewhere" in Bulgaria. On the advice of someone we briefly met this place turned out to be Plovdiv, a small and pretty old town in the south. The drive was long, but made manageable by the good views across Bulgaria. It was much prettier and the roads were much better than we all expected. The Romania-Bulgaria boarder took a while due to the bridge being under repair but a bit of football with the boarder guards made that wait easier. Early start today and now we're off to Turkey. We're expecting this to be the first long wait at a boarder crossing, but who knows :) I'll update you all tonight if I'm not shattered! ... read more

It has taken me a few weeks back home to get round to writing this .... I want to share what a fabulous place Plovdiv is. I left Lorraine and Keith and set off in a bus from VT to Plovdiv... now a word about bus travel in Bulgaria... it could be a large coach or it could be a mini bus... and so far I haven't seen any modern versions and certainly no toilets on board . So you need to check if they make comfort stops. On this particular journey the plus was the driver made several stops, but the minus was it was a very tatty old mini bus but hey it was cheap and got me to my destination even it it took five hours. And of course you get to see ... read more

Romanian roads not being the best or the most realiable, we headed out early to Vidin Bulgaria, still hot , still humid!! A trip that should take a little less than 5 hours took us 7 hours. Vidin is a port town on the southern bank of the Danube in the north-western Bulgaria, a good portion of Vidin's town centre is occupied by greenery, and tree lined streets. Even though it is beautiful, the town centre itself gives you a feeling that it is mostly abondoned , and that the rest of Bulgaria has forgotten this little corner.... read more

Sometimes you find a spare half hour and as I am about to leave for the aiport this is a quickie just to show a few photos from yesterday's visit to the World Heritage site of Rila Monastery and the ancient church of Boyana. Unfortunately it is not allowed to,take photos inside the churches ... One point is any flash light can damage the precious frescoes but also it is not appropriate in the place of worship so one must be respectful... No sneaking a pic. At Boyana church about 10 km from Sofia the tiny church has been built in 3 stages , 10th 12 th and 18th centuries with some destruction at certain periods and following that restoration. The frescoes inside are layered and so there are 12 th C on top of 10 ... read more
