Sorry for the obscure title, but it kept popping into my head as i wandered around Brugge, smelling all the waffles. Its from Shrek if anyone was wondering. Brugge was an interesting town, full of lots of different smells...not all good let me assure you. There was a big town square and as we were in Belgium I thought it pertinent to go to a chocolate museum. Found out about the history of chocolate and all that jazz, saw some wicked chocolate sculptures but i was waiting for the end. We watched a chocolatier make some chocolates and then we got to taste them..yum! The hostel we stayed at was pretty ordinary with the toilest being down a flight of stairs and through the bar....so good luck to you if had to use the bathroom when ... read more

David, can you smell the chocolate in the air? It's everywhere here. If you've been good to my Sarah I might bring you back some. Went out to eat after we got here for my anniversary dinner...14 years and now we're going to stuff ourselves with chocolate for the next two days. Brugge is very touristy but still maintains a medieval air. We'll hit the churches and climb the clock tower tomorrow. There'a Michelqngelo statue here too, one of the few outside Italy. Update tomorrow; GARY: Was that package in a yellow box? No big envelope yet?... read more

We had a full day. Another tower to climb, another town hall to look at with another gothic/medieval hall, and more churches. The weather was freaky today, threatening to rain. windy. and then the sun would shine We did a lot of window shopping and of course had to decide where to eat dinner. I found ONE place in all of Brugge that sells Pepsi..talk about a backward country!! We leave for Switzerland in the morning...it's going to be a long travel day, we'll spend the night in Bern and then on to the Alps, don't know when we'll be near an internet again. (9days to go...don't know where the time has gone...I have memories and stories for a lifetime.... read more

Wow what a crazy medieval city. The buildings are so wild I feel out of place. Weve met some real cool people in Belgium. Benedict, bought us a round last night at the bar. We met him for like 2 seconds and he grabbed us beer. We found a pumping bar @ like 2am. Full of French/English students from Brugge. All locals. We were loaded last night. Lots to do today. We found a cheap little guitar for 30 euro: SOLD. And iùm gonna smash before the airline can. "If you iz watching dis in da UK, you may remember me from da telly. If you iz in Belgium... you iz living in a shit hole." - Ali G, Ali G Indahouse (2002) Buoyed by having successfully completed my Search for the Truth About the Fries, I decided to undertake a little quest to see if I could solve another one of life´s enduring mysteries: Is Belgium - home of the waffle, Tintin, and Hercule Poirot - indeed a shit hole as Ali G proclaimed? Inspired by the famous portly Belgian detective, and with camera, notebook and my trusty Acme Shit Hole Detector 2006 in tow I set off in search of the Truth. Leaving The Hague, I boarded my train and headed for Antwerp, one of the major centres for the world diamond trade, ... read more

It was my birthday on Thursday and boy did I have a great one! I got lots of phone calls and messages and felt very special! I had to work, but afterwards some of the girls from work took me out for drinks, and then I met up with Kath and Graham at London Bridge for a couple more and a fabulous dinner. This weekend saw me heading off to Brugge in Belgium with Ed, Matt, Monique and Chris. We set off from London Bridge on Friday night in a hire car towards Folkestone, to catch the train through the channel tunnel (or ‘chunnel’ to those in the know) to Calais. Catching the train was a surreal experience. Everyone drives on to the train in their cars, and basically sits in their cars until you arrive ... read more

Matt: Belgium didn’t really impress Ed and me the last time we were there, five years ago. Looking back, I remember it more as this hazy void between the beauty of Berlin and the debauchery of Amsterdam (or as nine hours of my life that I’ll never get back). And so when a few of our friends suggested that we take a weekend in Brugge, I was less than enthusiastic! My doubts eased however when I started reading some articles on the place. Brugge seems to be known for four of my favourite things: Chocolate, Canals, Cuteness and Belgian Beer. Picturing myself consuming chocolate while cruising down a cute canal, sipping Belgian beer (try saying that fast 10 times), I relented. Our journey started on Friday afternoon at Waterloo where we picked up our car for ... read more

The land of beer, fries, mussles, waffles and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! I have indulged. Stayed in Brugge which was such a quaint little town. The next morning we went to Brussels for the day. A lot of people told me that there wasn’t much to see but I have to disagree. It was exactly the weekend I needed, away from hectic London and tourists. I did all the proper sight seeing. And of course, plentiful of eating and drinking beer. Cherry and raspberry flavoured. Mmmm…. Before heading back to England we stopped at some world war memorial sites. It was pretty surreal to visit the actual trenches and battle fields. The trip definitely has given me the travel bug again. I plan on heading to Cornwall next weekend to get some sun!! ... read more
