Dear family and friends, I am a lazy procrastinator, but every day gets a little better. I am taking a little break right now because I just wrote two and a half pages of my history paper about the American government system. Would you believe I´m back to writing about John Marshall, judicial review and current events? Some things change so much and others, not at all. This weekend I spent a lovely day in Brussels with some of the other exchange students. Well, lovely in the fact that the weather was beautiful and it was a wonderful time with friends. But I got a real wake-up call when we saw the many poor people on the streets, normally mothers with young children, all brandishing little cups to collect change in. It was very sad (sad ... read more

Beste familie en vrienden/Dear family and friends: One of the nice bonuses to this exchange is having the opportunity to do things like catch up on my reading and exercise for fun--things I didn´t have the time or motivation to do last year. I have read Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer, the 2nd and 3rd Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books by Ann Brasheres, Adrian Mole: The Lost Years by Sue Townsend, Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman (I don´t know if that´s been published in America) and I´m in the middle of The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje. Our school library has an extensive English section, for which I am very grateful. As for the exercising, well, I have been taking very fun group figure skating lessons once a week at a rink nearby. We ... read more

Dear Readers: So I know it is going to be a bit hard to update this as frequently as I´d like, what with homework, posting pictures on Facebook (which I still need to do! yikes!), keeping up with correspondence (Lexi, you´re next) and actually living life in Belgium, but I really want you guys to be able to read this so I will do my best! I am really grateful for my host sisters Annemie and Liesbet. We went to the Leuven Kermis (fair or carnival) last Saturday night with Annemie´s friend Caroline and they won me two stuffed animals! Liesbet also helped me to navigate through a fun and treacherous ´house´ filled with moving sidewalks, stairs, and what looked like a human-sized hampster wheel! I felt like a carefree youth again (haha, I sound like ... read more

Dear friends, I have been in Belgium since 8 August, but this is my first opportunity to post a travel blog entry. I am an exchange student through Youth for Understanding (YFU), and I am from New Jersey, USA. I am in Belgium until late December (semester program). I am living in the town of Heverlee, which is a municipality of the larger city of Leuven, in the province of Vlaams Brabant (Flemish Brabant) in Flanders, (the Dutch-speaking part of) Belgium. I graduated high school in the States last year, but I have wanted travel to Europe ever since I was younger and read Bloomability by Sharon Creech (about an American girl who goes to school in Switzerland), and this dream was reinforced by seeing the movie A Little Romance last year (about an American girl ... read more

Hi guys! I'm so sorry I've been MIA for the last few weeks. I hope you didn't think that I's forgotten about you, I've just been so busy! So hopefully this will update you a bit on my first two weeks, and I promise from now on I'll be better about keeping in touch. So after my flight got canceled, I took a second trip to the airport on the 27th. My first flight landed in Dulles Washington, which I thought was supposed to be Dallas, so I was a little confused at first. Anyway, I found my plane and ended up sitting my two British girls, 13 and 11 I think, who wanted to talk to me the entire way to Brussels. I probably got about an hour of sleep on the plane, so I ... read more

Certainty The thing about traveling is that it gives you the change just to lay back and and do the things you want to do through escaping our daily, serious lives. For me and Mathias, my friend that will be joining me, it means no more cost accounting (me) or making complex engineering designs of apartment blocks(Mathias). But is it just that, running away from life? Well, for some people it actually means leaving the very lives they chose to live. Relaxing at the poolside, sipping a Mai-Tai from a coconut through a bent straw while the umbrella won't stay in its place or walking down the pearl white beaches with their feet in the ocean blue, refreshing water whilst checking the "surroundings" for a place, if there is any left, to drop their towels... ... read more

Inter-exam-Pre-Pre-Pre-Pre-vacation-day dreams For weeks a friend and I have been thinking about going on vacation somewhere in the world. Restrictions for this endeavor are: *budget( travel+expenses)=approx. €700 * location: somewhere hot; *purpose: pleasure by culture and relaxation Unfortunately, at this time, in the present day, now, we are experiencing a period in our lives that every of my fellow students despise: EXAMS Our first thoughts wondered towards a formula issued by our national airport in Zaventem, Belgium or like the foreigners like to call it: "Brussels Airport". This 'Last call'-formula is quite exciting because the main idea is to arrive at the airport without any reservation and just check which flights are still available...of course these flight should be cheaper than pre-booked fli... read more

Hello to everybody reading this blog! I can imagine that you are more interested in my travel experiences (some call it adventures) rather than in my person, so I will keep this short! I am just a normal guy, working as a teacher in Brussels, taking every chance he gets to discover a part of the world. As I shortly will turn 40, my way of moving around the world has changed a bit during the years, but still I try to keep it basic with a stress on discovering the local culture and meeting local people. Of course I also enjoy a day at the beach or a relaxing moment at the swimming pool, but that's not the main goal of my travelling. As I travel rather often, people back home - that's in Leuven, ... read more

I should have been here by now, settled and learning how to temper dark vs. milk chocolate, and finding out firsthand that white chocolate actually smells kinda bad when you're tempering it. But no. I don’t even have a place to live yet. I was in Leuven again for less than 48 hours, although I planned on staying for a week, but before that it was for a month, at least in the hotel I booked. I wrote Laike two weeks prior to coming out and didn’t hear from her again until the day before I flew out. It took another in person visit to the chocolate shop to find out that even though my apartment in NYC is rented out for six months starting on December 1st, Laike didn’t think it was a good idea ... read more
