Day trip to Bruges. The best word to describe this city is peaceful. Tree lined canals, cobblestone streets, old homes. This city requires more than a short day to really explore it. But all we have is today so off we went. The city is famous for mussels (sadly out of season), chocolate (always in season!), beer (also always in season), and lace. Since mussels were off the list we had Flemish Stew for lunch. A delicious beef stew with a dark, rich gravy made with beer. Absolutely delicious. We took a tour of the only brewery in Bruges. It has been family owned and operated for six generations. Lots of antique equipment on sight and a beautiful vista from the rooftop. The tour was quite informative. They stressed that beer is vitally necessary and contributes ... read more

Only a 15 minute train ride away is the city of Brussels. It would be a shame to be this close and not go there. So we caught the train and off we went. Eating and drinking the local delicacies is a big part of the trip. Today was a good example. We had Belgium chocolates, Frittes (Belgium french fries. Fried twice is the local way), croquettes, and Belgium beer. Oh and the city. It is famous for its town square called The Grand Place. It is that. The Town Hall dominates the square with its 300 foot tower (couldn't go up in it). These days the Town Hall hosts royal weddings, Crown Prince Philippe got married here in 1999. Besides all the wonderful buildings around the square it is also lined with restaurants and chocolate ... read more

We have arrived in Belgium in the University town of Leuven. Leuven is called the City of Beer. A hundred years ago the city boasted no fewer than 788 different drinking establishments. It is home to the largest brewery in the country and also the smallest. It has the "longest bar in the Europe" in Oude Markt. The impressive Town Hall dates back to 1439. The 236 statues have been in the niches since 1850, which means they have survived two world wars, So we were met at the train station by a friend of the owners whose apartment we are staying in for the week. Magda walked us to our new "home" which is a very nice third floor apartment on the main street of town. The owners are at their main home in France. ... read more

Today is the LAST day of our long holiday... We've been back 2 weeks and the travel seems so far away already. It was very nice to come home, and to get all the things we had missed, all the toys were used in one day, we made our favorite dishes, sat down in a comfy sofa and had hot showers again! And after a week the shitty weather turned nice and warm. We also realize again why we wanted to travel in the first place, slowly stress of household with 3 kids comes kreeping in, but... we have new energy now and the travelling surely thaught us things to remember. Our blog still misses lots of stories and photos, in Malaysia we still have Penang and Langkawi to come, on Bali we also stayed a while ... read more

Today we jumped on the bus from Stavelot in the Ardenne traveled for about two hours to Tournais which was the finish of the stage for today's race. After parking the bus we set out through the flat countryside, riding along the canal for about 30 km's before stopping for lunch. Then the "fun" started. We set off to conquer the three largest climbs of the Tour of Flanders, which were the Oude Kwaremont, Patersberg and Copenburg. In themselves they were not the worst climbs so far, except that they are cobbled. The first climb was long and not too steep but one member of the group still managed to break a filling. After that the next ride got harder, the front wheel lifting and the backwheel skidding. Chris was going well until he was thwarted ... read more

2/6/2012 Today I had to make biscuits for my French course on Monday because we had a shared lunch celebrating the finish of the French course during the summer break. So I made some browie/chocolate biscuit crossovers, and after trying a few, giving a few to Mammy and Pappy (Christelles mum and father-in-laws house), the remaining biscuits were going to be taken to the French course on Monday. 3/6/2012 Today, I went along with Christelle and Jean-Claude to a ‘Brocante’, at the awesome time of waking up at 6:30 in the morning. Unfortunately, the weather was all but great, and a lot of the sellers packed up shop before we got to them. Also today, I received a letter in the mail, upon opening it, I was a little puzzled, and out fell a colourful bracelet. ... read more

What to say but that we are ready for take off and very excited about this. It's been quite time consuming to prepare this trip but luckily in a good way. The last few months we've been living up to this a lot, also the children, so now finally we can be rewarded with all the beauty one can only imagine... Wondering how we will feel after a long airplane voyage, the heat that hits our faces when we get out, a huge vibrant city (in absolute contrast with our little chalet in the forest) ! ... tired I guess, but also amazingly happy, this is where it really starts! In Singapore we stay 2 nights to reload the batteries before we take off North! The night train will bring us to Perhentian Islands...Besar 4 nights ... read more

All of my entries thus far have only documented my shenanigans traveling around and hosting handsome visitors. I promise that I am actually in Europe for academic purposes. If for no other reason than to give myself a bit of credibility, I'll write today about what I'm actually doing at KUL. Final exams have begun and we will have completed all 5 by February first (after which I will hastily hop on a plane to spend 10 days in HB with my family!) Last week: Classification of Paralympic Athletes, Disability Studies January 12th This week: Biomechanics (wheelchair propulsion, gait analysis, aquatics and prosthetics), Physical Activity-Physical Fitness- Risk of Exercise, and Exercise Management in Chronic Disease and Disability January 17th Next week: Statistics Applied for APA on the 24th (yikes) The final week: Psychology of Sport, ... read more
