As some of you may already know I’ve actually just spent the 6-7 weeks camping out at a place in Antwerp (124 bed hostel). Two things lead me to this interesting situation, the first was a phone call whilst I was in Holland and the second was I needed a rest from travelling. Allow me to explain….. You see if you ever get the wonderful opportunity to go travelling for an extended period of time you’ll soon realise moving around all the time, exploring new places and watching your back when you’re travelling solo can be very tiring…. I know this is going to sound crazy and probably drum up some hate mail from a few of you but seriously… it’s really is hard work sometimes. Also as you may have noticed in my last few ... read more

Martin and I were fortunate to be in Antwerp for the 2nd Indian Customers vs RTD cricket match. A couple of training sessions before the day meant we actually got to touch a cricket ball and for me, a couple of swings of a cricket bat in the nets... Despite my duck, I managed not to let any balls pass me when fielding, but alas, didn't get to show them my Sandy's special flipper as I didn't get to bowl. At least I faced a ball though, Martin padded up and his batting partner faced three balls and was then out. That was the entire RTD team dismissed! We then had a fantastic dinner/dance hosted by the Indian Customers and overnight stay at a hotel on a lake. Martin and I chose to spend the following ... read more

Home! We're home, arrived safely etc. So all is good, we've been pretty busy actually. But don't lose track of this blog because I'll try to add more photo's and videos. The internet connections in Thailand and Cambodia didn't allow us to upload long videos. But now that we're home we can upload them. I'm at work now ... oh how I miss Thailand =)... read more

23rd January: Incessant, driving rain, and a filthy windscreen, hamper progress to Antwerp. That, and searching diesel stations round Calais for the elusive heavy truck road tax needed for Belgium. I'm now back on the Tina Turner tour European leg - no White Cliffs of Dover again, for me, until early April. Bed at 3am. At 6.35, outside my truck window, a drunken colleague on this twenty-truck tour holds a loud, slurred, incoherent conversation. Then “Namibian Colin”, who shall feature regularly in this blog, accidentally blows his airhorn at 9 o'clock. When doing his daily sit-up getting out of bed, his bulky paunch catches the stalk on the steering column; he's simply too fat! 24th January: Terrible! Four bendy young honeys in miniskirts degrading themselves on stage...IN LEATHER. Yes, of course I watched the show. 'All ... read more

Time flies by….!

"Do you mean I can have 4 days off?" I said to my boss after double checking the roster. Sounds good to me I thought, perfect time to get away for a couple of days. After looking around at my options I decided to take the Eurostar to Belgium for 4 days. Some chocolate, beer and waffles would do me nicely. So after spending Thursday evening with my friends in London (also for the last time at our house in Avenue Rd), I boarded the early Friday morning service from London to Brussels where I then connected on a northbound train to Antwerp. My first impressions were obviously "grand" after arriving in the magnificent Central Station. Wow, what an impressive building. The "OLD EUROPE" feel was balanced with an Art Deco lego block with the letter ... read more

Today was a very long day. We left Paris from Gare du Nord at 6:30 AM and traveled to Antwerp where we were to see an exhibit at Moma (ModeMuseum) on Paper Fashion. When we arrived, we were informed that it was a national holiday and everything was closed (except for the exhibit which we weren't scheduled to see until the afternoon). So.....why not go to Holland for a little shopping? We hopped back on the train and went to Holland! It was quaint and fun....there was a festival going on celebrating the 500th anniversary of a church. We looked around, ate some chocolate and lunch.....and got back on the train to Antwerp. Antwerp was neat = lots of interesting people strolling around the streets. We walked about 3/4 mile to the museum......we all really enjoyed ... read more

I HAD to visit this VAN GOGH museum. It was part of the origional plans of this trip so I couldnt leave town without that. But that just meant I couldnt catch a train out of Amsterdam till later on in the afternoon. I checked it out and the museum was open at 10am. Ah it was fine I could just go back to the hostel and hang out for abit and maybe get some breaky. Problem was it was raining. Pissing rain actually. As soon as I left the station from my slumber!! I didnt bring an umbrella for space reasons. I figured I would be fine with just a rain jacket. NOPE. Best thing to do with the rain is keep it the hell away from you. I walked towards the hostel to go ... read more

Antwerp, Belgium July 8-10 I caught an early evening train to Antwerp from Lille and arrived to my host’s apartment around 8pm. I got a bit lost on the way, but that tends to happen quite often in new cities. Riet was immediately very welcoming and easy to talk to. I could tell we’d get along great. After dropping off my load at her place, we walked a short distance into the center of town and went to a bar where there was a good local rock group playing. We’d arrived a bit late, and it was completely packed to the door with people. We squeezed our way in and grabbed a couple of drinks. I of course got my first Belgian Trappist Ale on tap!! I got Orval, which was served in traditional Belgian fashion, ... read more
