My current trip is "Burma (Myanmar) - 2013". On the right hand side you will find the list of Trips.

I didn't use TravelBlog for a few years, so you won't find anything about my other trips to Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Finland, Sweden, etc. At this moment I can't guarantee that I will post anything/much during my Burma trip, but I think I will try. It will depend on how much time I have, whether of not I have an internet connection and how stable that connection is (I have no image editing software with me and the pictures from my camera are huge, so uploading them requires a stable connection).

Having said that, feel free to keep an eye on this blog =)

Traffic in Vietnam I don't think I need to write much about this. There's a huge amount of people in cities like Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and Hanoi. And most of them drive motorbikes as cars are very expensive here. There's traffic everywhere, all the time. To get a feeling of how many motorbikes there are, just walk around or drive one during rush hour. The numbers are huge, I don't know them, but they are huge. Traffic rules I'm sure they have them, but it's more like guidelines than rules. At least that's how it can feel. Of course there's things like traffic lights and such, but not everybody respects them all the time. And then there's the six second "gap of death", as I heard a comedian ones describe. The thing is, he's ... read more

Beauty from the books If you're looking for beautiful countryside landscapes, this is the place to go. I was there today and Hoa Binh offers all you want : great landscapes, mountains, rivers, rice fields, buffalo's on roads, buffalo's in the water, very charming houses, very charmings houses on hilltops, markets, climbing opportunities, you name it they got it. The drive through Hoa Binh today was fenomenal. We visited Hoe's mom's grandparents, sister and brothers there, they all live in and around the city. I am going back there for sure when I have more time to spend around that area. Unfortunately we were also there to visit a family member who's daughter has recently died in an accident. I haven't written about it before (although we heard of it upon arrival in Vietnam) and I ... read more

Hello world of fries and other forms of potatoes I've been in Hanoi again, for a few days now. So far we've visited a lot of family. Yesterday we visited 44 family members + other random people who showed up. It took actually the whole day until dinner. After dinner, Hoe's friends showed up and after that we could call it a day. So not a lot happened, but don't think it's not tiring. Trying to listen carefully to every word they speak to try and pick out the words you know so you can follow the conversation at least a tiny bit and show some interest, for a whole day, is actually tiring. I can't get on facebook at the moment as the encrypted connection I use for that is not working at the moment, ... read more

Last day in Saigon We'll be leaving to Hanoi again in a few huors. Hoe's grandfather's birthday is coming up, and I also have more family to meet (and convince of our relationship). A lot has happened the past few days, coupled with the hot and humid weather, it tires me out quicker every day. But there's food to recharge me, and Coca Cola to provide for my sugar needs. The food So far you've read about the bird eggs containing baby birds and the field mice. Those we're, I guess, the strangest things to read about. In the mean time I can add pigs ears, goat meat, goat kidney and goat brain to that. Yesterday Hoe and I ate hot pot (for a change =) with her nephew and his wife. Hoe and I just ... read more

Hello all and here's something for you to read It's short, as I'm low on time again. This is more to still your hunger for new posts ;) We're in Can Tho now. We just had a nice hot pot (third one in two days) and fried field mice. Before you say "yuck", you haven't tasted it! It actually has little flavor, so, "tasteslike chicken" is more or less correct ;) Third hot pot in two days because yesterday Hoe and I ate in Seoul Garden in Saigon which was really nice and after spending some time around Saigon we met Thu and Hien in Kitchi Kitchi. A Japanese transport-belt hot pot restaurant. All very well, but I ate myself half to death. So when we had another hot pot today, I felt like I would ... read more

But I'll try to throw in a quick update Luang Prabang We spent a few days in Luang Prabang. A very charming town, with nice people and good food. Relaxing evening markets and a beautiful environment. The best moment for us (surely for me) is when we crossed the Mekong to get away from everyone else. There's a waterfall you can go see near Luang Prabang, practically all tours, organisers, guides, ... will take you there. However, there's also another waterfall, which is actually closer, on the other side of the Mekong. So we got ourselves a 2 euro (for both) boat ride across the river from a local and got off at Ban Xiem (if I remember correctly). Just a short ride, 5 minutes on the water, give or take a minute. But what a ... read more

Hello from Laos! It's quite late again, we've had a full day, so again this will be short, mainly due to lack of time (other things to do than being on line) and the very poor internet connection. The original plan was to fly to Dien Bien Phu (bus would take too long) and then cross the border into Laos and go to Luang Prabang. Unfortunately, all plane tickets were sold out so we opted to fly straight to Luang Prabang from Hanoi. Sadly this means I have to skip Dien Bien Phu and the North of Laos. But we do gain one or two days we can spend here or somewhere else due to the time we won by coming straight here. Laos is beautiful. The landscape from the air and everything you see walking ... read more

Hello again Today I slept late. Not because I went to bed late but because Hoe's brother is a very active sleeper. And when I say very, I mean very! Some snoring added to that and a cold night (yes, it's warmer in Belgium these days) and a small blanket thrown in the equation totals to waking up often in the middle of the night. So when I was awake at 8am, I had no chance to get out of bed. I asked Hoe to wake me up after a short while (meaning, 1 more hour) but she woke me up 2 hours later. Good for me of course but in the mean time one of her uncles came to visit and it turns out he doesn't like people that sleep long very much ... a-ha. ... read more
