Our first full biking day - we were pretty excited, but didn't get all our stuff together and ready to head out the door until 10:30am! Is so great to sleep in and not be on a schedule! We picked Lier to bike to - both for the distance (about 15 miles) and for the town's description. Our guide book Lier as a pretty little town, south-east of Antwerp that has a handsome collection of historic buildings and a 14th century watch tower. We found our way on our routed bike routes (04-08-10-80-81-61-63-11 to 89). We were delighted to find that the "hole in the wall" that leads us under the railroad drops us quickly out to bike route 04 and we were off! The first town we biked through was Mortsel - about 25,000 people ... read more

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 First, Happy Birthday to our youngest daughter! Have a wonderful day celebrating! While I was up and about early, Jean was sure that she should sleep until noon - or at least sleep until she was sure she could sleep no more. By 8am I think I "guilt-ed" her into thinking she should be up - as I was up, bed made, breakfast eaten, showered and dressed! We began our day heading back to the bike shop we had found, only to be told that no, they did not rent bikes. The young man sent us to the Central train station. Here we found bikes for rent (red bikes) that are checked in and out of parking stations through out town, set up like a borrowing short commuter stations. They are set ... read more

Yesterday morning I was beginning to feel really nervous because my aunt arranged to take me to a naked sauna in Belgium. To be fair I had asked her, because I was curious and interested in the health and relaxing side of the experience but I also enjoy challenging myself, finding new experiences and boosting my self confidence. Back home a friend has a naked sauna in her garden which I've been to several times with a couple people and I found the experience refreshing. http://www.brasschaatsbadhuis.be/ Here is a link to the luxurious Badhuis with colour and hot saunas, steam rooms, cold baths, swimming pool, jacuzzi, restaurant and rest rooms. First my aunt rubbed salt in my back and then we started with a foot bath. It was really calm in the morning, there were few ... read more

Hi !! Belgian TV showed this evening a report about Bart... A 23 yo guy who died last December after a battle of 7 years against cancer. Once Bart knew that he could not recover from the cancer he started up with his brother an organisation which has to aim to convince people to be more happier about their lifes. People should be happy about the things they have. Bart chose to have himself sedated on the day that he felt that he could not live with the pain anymore... It was a very emotional report on TV... So why am I telling this? Very simple : Bart's final words ( "Enjoy life and be happy about the things you have and don't be sad/upset about what you not have") at the end of the report ... read more

Hello there, 5 more days/nights and I am off again. Off to one of the most fantastic places where you could go to during European winter. Escaping the bitter cold and go and soak up some sun.... Australia: here I come again. So with 5 more days to go I have decided to create this blog. ( I admit, I am not original with this idea, I actually stole the idea from Pieter -> Credits paied Mr Drubbel) With 5 days to go before departure , time has come to get the suitcase out of the closet and place it in the living room. Now the stupid thing is that when you fly to the USA , you are allowed to take 32 kgs with you. If you fly all the way to Australia, the luggage ... read more

Took the double decker train to Etten-Leur where I met Linda and her boyfriend Erwin. Linda is a good friend of my exchange student and both were really lovely people! They organised a day out for me in Antwerp, Belgium to visit the weird and wonderful museum that is Verbeke Foundation. As we crossed the boarder from the Netherlands to Begium, the roads got bumpier. The surrounding grounds of the museum looked like a dump site and the building itself was a freezing cold warehouse with an overgrown green house. The gerenal theme was to bring nature and ecology together. The exhibition had a large collection of dead animal installations, stuffed, rotting and other half carcasses hanging and stretched out to create a somewhat disturbing installation. Some works were inspired and copies of Damien Hurst's pieces, ... read more

It is early December and the Wind is hauling over the tundra's of the Western Europe. Winter is starting and the ever increasing snow is making live more and more difficult for the European Baloo Bear. It will not be long before he will start his epic journey to the east. Over the mountains into the warmer regions of this planet, where he will raise his new born cup. But something went wrong here. This is not a Baloo Bear. It's PIG Bear. It is unusual to see a bear taking over the parent ship over another young. Will this work out?? Will it survive the cold long trekking through the high mountains of the Himalaya's and the mosquito filled air of the swamps of Indonesia....? Experience it every Monday on "Baloo on the rocks". this is written on the InterCity (IC) train from Anwerpen/Anvers to Amsterdam after I jumped on (just) at 3pm - having jumped off in Antwerpen/Anvers (so that is where the liqueur comes from - had one in Brugge - like yellow Chartreuse). Anyway headed off form the hotel Pantone, grabbed some pastires and yoghurt drink from the corner store just by the Hotel des Monnaies metro - unlike yesterday Sunday they had virtually run out of pastry things but got a couple of their last. All set for a little less than 3E - after the usual massive dinners I have been having the idea of payng the Pantone 15E for breakfast was quite ridiculous so def. did not take them up on it. The train was at 11.18 so notionally had enought time - but ... read more

Tonight is our last in Antwerp which is large and very cool city in the north east of Belgium. We’ve had a good time here - running in the Strada Park in the early morn, walking through the cobbled streets and squares, looking in the shops (mainly window shopping as many do not open early in the week or early in the day), gazing out at Scheldt River (see view back to the town from the river, pic 1) and eating of course! We had a particularly great meal at the Grand Cafe Horta on Monday night - mussels for me, salmon penne for A, washed down with a lovely Chablis. Today we took the train to Amsterdam to see a little of the Netherlands and to visit the Van Gogh Museum. Looking out from the ... read more

Episode 3: Paris and Belgium Thursday September 2 , 2010 (by Craig) Hello everyone. I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. Thanks to all who left comments (Rodd, Leon; Colin et al). We left the Loire Valley last week and headed by train to Paris. Before leaving, we spent half a day at two of the nearby chateaux (medieval French castles/palaces). Chateau Villandry was amazing, primarily for its magnificent manicured gardens, which looked like a huge patchwork quilt of colours. The best gardens Ive ever seen anywhere (Google Image: Villandry). The whole of Loire Valley is world heritqge listed ; if you come to Paris, be sure to go south by 2 hours to see the chataux here. We spent a weekend in Paris. We had seen all the major sites in ... read more
