My friends from Xela and I went to Antigua for the weekend. For some this would be but a brief rest from the near constant rain of Xela, for others this would possibly be the search for a new home, for me a new phase of my travels, the journey to Tikal and return to Los Angeles. I have just 3 weeks left before I fly on to Hawaii. Antigua has changed in the three weeks since I left, not in any major way, but there are many fewer tourists and students, this must be the depths of the low season. Clubs and bars that were busy even on a Monday or Tuesday are empty, I'm stopped more often in the streets by people extolling the virtues of one Spanish School or another. On the flip ... read more

I had decided to return to Guatemala after 10 days in Utila. The diving had been a fantastic experience but I was starting to run out of hard cash. A Limpera, the currency in Honduras is worth 1/2 a Quetzal, the currency in Guatemala, a Quetzal at this time is worth about 8 pence (12c). I had 500 Limperas left, on this I had to leave the country, pay for accommodation for a night and eat. 500 Limperas is worth £20. The ferry from Utila to La Ceiba was 195 Limperas. Ok, 305 limperas left. 51 Limperas to San Pedro on the bus, 254 Limperas remain. On the ferry to La Cieba I met up with Jules from England, Helena and Pamela from France, they were all wanting to travel to Copan, Helena and Pamela then ... read more

Coming In You'd think that because it's in the Caribbean, it's not too much trouble to get to, but being exclusive requires some restrictions. So we flew into St. Maarten so we could clearly see what we were NOT missing! That place looked like Jamaica on Spring Break, all dilapidated. That doesn't mean we weren't in for a bit of a scare when we came into St. Barths on the STOL aircraft. The runway is so oddly located and short that these special aircraft are required and the approach requires a last minute nose-dive onto the runway in order to clear a large hill at its western end. We later heard stories that some cars had been clipped, even carried away from this hill by landing aircraft. Le Manapany Hotel & Cottages We stayed at the ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Bay Islands » Utila September 25th 2002

The Bay Islands off the Caribbean coast of Honduras are famous for the quality and the price of their diving. Another new experience for me waited there. Scuba diving. To get to this wonderous new experience I had to negotiate the bus companies of Honduras. The 7am bus took me in relative comfort to San Pedro Sula, the second city of Honduras. After around 50 Limpiras (£2) and a 3hr journey I arrived in one of San Pedros bus stations. My one task for the city was to withdraw enough Limpiras to cover my diving course and keep me fed and sheltered for the same number of days. This is the first significant section of my journey were I have been totally on my own. This made the task a lot more difficult than it could ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Western » Copán Ruinas September 23rd 2002

From Antigua the next stop down on the backpacker trail into Honduras is Copan Ruinas. Copan Ruinas is a small town situated a kilometre from ancient Mayan Ruins. I travelled down to Copan with Ripan, a friend I had made in Antigua. The journey involved a chicken bus from Antigua to Guatemala City at 6.20am, followed by a brief confused spell in Guatemala city where we tried to work out which one of the many bus stations we were at, refused taxis for a walk that was easily made on foot. After positioning ourselves on the Lonely Planet map of Guatemala City, we headed over to the next bus station on the off chance, we were in luck and soon found ourselves headed down to Chiquimula. The worst place to make judgements about any town is ... read more

In Spanish Antigua means literally antique. Antigua until 1773 was the capital of Guatemala. In 1773 Antigua was devastated by an earthquake that all but destroyed the city. The Guatemalans decided to move the capital of the country to the present location of Guatemala City. Meanwhile the citizens of Antigua rebuilt the city in the colonial Spanish style that had existed before the destruction. Now Antigua is a world heritage site, meaning that special laws regulate any renovations, or new buildings in the area. Nestled between three volcanoes Antigua is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. Scattered throughout the town are ruins from the 1773 earthquake, colonial buildings now converted into restaurants, shops and Internet cafes. I had only planned to stay in Antigua for a few days but due to being ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Nassau September 13th 2002

Us girls wanted to go somewhere fun, with lots to do, and to just chill and relax, so we thought let's go to the Carribeans!!! After seeing images of The Atlantis Hotel and Dolpins, we knew it had to be Bahamas, and I have to say it was definately one of the best experiences of my life!!! There was so much fun and laughter, I'm surprised I didn't die of it!!! So Vix and I are in Heathrow, and I noticed that I didn't have a ticket Vix did, so I told the ticket desk and they said that everything was fine and I wouldn't have any problems. When we arrived in Miami, I wasn't allowed to check-in to our flight to Bahamas because of that missing ticket! After argueing for what seemed hours, I ... read more

Here in Xela there is a Spanish School with a print of my arse on the wall. Sakribal has been really good fun, and I’ve learnt lots of Spanish, if only I could put more of into practice. My teacher for the third and fourth weeks of school was Carolina, she spoke only a few words of English, which meant that the lessons were much harder work for me – exactly what I needed. I bought the most horrible item in Xela as a thank you present, a Hello Kitty lamp/alarm clock combo, she really loved it so that was great. Ok… so the arse prints, paint on paper on a chair, arse on the chair on the paper, reverse arse towards wall and the print is made. Sharon, Lizette and Christian (the crazy Danes of ... read more

On Saturday my family, well Patrick and Francisco took me to Alguna Chicabal. About 10 miles from Xela, the lake is in the centre of a dormant volcano, surrounded by lush highland forest. It's also the home of the Quetzal - the national bird. It's very rare. We got up at 5am, Pablo my Guatemalan brother decided not to take us in the pickup truck as promised the previous day so it was another trip on the chicken bus. After leaping off the chicken bus in the middle of nowhere we had a 3hr hike to the summit. We set off, I kept having to wait for my companions. Francisco complained that I was "muy rapido" - fortunately a pickup truck passed, Francisco hailed it and we jumped on. There were three small boys in the ... read more

My second (and now third) week in Xela has been a lot of fun. The friendships I had made in the first week carried on into the second and I now have a new brother, Patrick, from Dallas, Texas. Patrick has been living in Xela for around 6 months volunteering at a local school, teaching English, the first English teacher that they have ever had at the school - and travelling around central America. He's a few years older than me, I guess that makes him my big brother. Having Patrick around has helped with my Spanish as he is "mas o menos" - more or less, fluent it means that an instant translation of the difficult words is available. The amount of conversation at the table has increased, my limited vocabulary was holding things back ... read more
