Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten December 10th 2007

We woke up this morning and we were docked in St. Maarten which is an island where one half belongs to the Dutch and the other half belongs to the French. Therefore, the currency used here is the Euro. Depending on which side you are on, the island is spelled differently. Sint Maarten on the Dutch side and Saint Martin on the French side. We docked in the town of Phillipsburg which is on the Dutch side. The first thing we noticed this morning was that there was another cruise ship docked alongside us. The other ship appeared to be a European liner and was named Oceania. We knew immediately that it was going to be a crowded day in the port. Just like St. Thomas, there was a bunch of duty-free shops right outside ... read more

Folks, I have to start with an apology. I know I said Iwas going to tell you all about my first day, but I've decided against that. It went by in a whirl of jet lagged paper work and trying to learn an awful lot very quickly. So sufficeto say - tired, didn't listen, got pissed, had monumental hangover. Wished I was dead! Yesterday I had my first shoot in one of the ships dining rooms (the Coral - as in sea life, not rodeo) Which was to say the least, knackering! Walking round to a hundred or so tables with a dozen folk round each pretending you're bight breezy and enjoying yourself got a wee bit tedious. And, as I yelled at the umpteenth eejit who asked me "NO I AM NOT FROM FUCKING AUSTRALIA!!!" ... read more

We did an overnight from Virgin Gorda along with Sea Schell, Island time, Perseverance, 2 other boats joined in. Perseverance and us went directly to Marigot Bay, the others went to Simpson Bay. We arrived to early, we kept trying to slow boat down to no avail, did a few 180s between Marigot and the island of Anguila. Which by the way is flat, not like all the others, with hills and mountains. We anchored close to the wall downtown, in front of the green painted restaurant with the palm trees protruding through the roof. We put the dinghy in the water, headed for dinghy dock, it was low tide, was quite a climb up the slats, no ladder. Customs and immigration was a breeze, cost $7 US. We went back to the boat, put our ... read more

Today was our last day in St. Maarten and I spent a good chunk of it on tour with three of my teens. We did the America’s Cup Regatta where we went on actual racing sailboats, ones that have competed in the America’s Cup. We were each shown how to perform a certain task to help sail the boat. I was given the task of “Winch Wench” and I loved it! When I was assigned “Winch Wench” all I could think was I couldn’t wait to tell Centaurians that after being “Wenchie” on Regatta day at camp, I got to be a real “Wench” at sea! I loved it! For the tour, we were split onto 2 boats and we raced eachother. Me and my teens and a half dozen other guests were on the Canada ... read more

36c, Fine Boarding the flight to St Maarten from New York I immediately knew I wouldn’t be your typical tourist on the island. All the other passengers were well to do elderly couples kitted out in the latest fashions from (insert name of fashionable elderly store here) and ready to sip Pina Coladas on the beach. Fair enough, I just hoped I’d fit in somewhere on the island because it was obvious that without Marg there would be no sunset cocktails and candle lit dinners. My first taste of the Caribbean was the ride to Sint Maarten’s Dutch capital Philipsburg - a rather un-Dutch kind of place that was packed to the brim with Gucci stores, duty free outlets, the latest electrical goods from Japan and everything a travelling US tourist would want in less ... read more

Last month a tragedy occurred. My camera stopped working. That’s right, the expensive investment I made in a digital camera only a year ago stopped working. The camera I take with me everywhere at home, let along when I travel, stopped working. The camera that has taken literally thousands of photos during the first half of my contract stopped working. In order to get it fixed, I had to express mail it back to Canada for repairs which will hopefully be covered by the warranty. Except even then, it will take months to get it back. Months in which I will be visiting a 10 different ports, having a ton of adventures, attending tons of parties and running hundreds of teen activities. For me, not having a camera is devastating. I borrowed Brooks’ camera a lot ... read more

Hello there all of you lovely brillant and fabulous people wherever you all are. The time has come to create a new website that will allow me to update my travel journals, so no more bugbitten, (it appears it chewed me up and spat me out and ended up on this travel logging website instead. Well its been busy since January this year. From the sport fisher Gaycita, I left to brighter bigger and superyacht paths of the stewardess life on MuMu. A 130ft Sailing Yacht (Yes Yes Yes Sailing!!!) No more stinkers and was full swing into detailing rooms, folding toilet paper, making beds and cleaning heads, ironing, washing (the real housewife duties to the extreme!). Well all in all it was short lived (thankfully) the owner didnt take to the way I interacted with ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten February 27th 2007

Hyppäsimme tänään tiistaina 27.2.2007 kuunari Helenan kyytiin Phillipsburgista, St. Martinilta. Kuunari odotti lahdella kaupungin edustalla, ja meidät kuljetettiin alukseen dingi(=kumivene)kyydillä. Meidät vastaanotti laivan miehistö. Saimme lyhyen alusesittelyn ja pikakoulutuksen vessojen toiminnasta!  Loppuosa porukasta saapui päivän aikana. Petipaikat valittiin periaatteella ”nopeimmat syövät hitaat”, valitsin punkan keskeltä vasemmalta Christina -hytistä. Yhteensä oppilaita mukana on 16, 10 naista ja 6 miestä. Akkavalta siis! Päivä kului kaupungilla oleskellen, uiden ja toisiimme tutustuen. Vaikuttaa mukavalta poppoolta! Kömmimme hytteihin jossain vaiheessa iltaa - ahtaanpaikan kammo vainosi koko illan, mutta ei päässyt yllättämään yön aikana… ***************************************************************************** Today we started our sailing trip with schooner Helena ... read more

Hei! Lensimme pienehkolla potkurikoneella Martiniquelta Guadaloupen (Pointe A Pitre) kautta St. Martinille. St. Martin on yksi maailman pienimmista maista, joka on kahden valtion, Hollannin ja Ranskan, jakama. Olemme varanneet hotellin Marigotista, ranskalaisen puolen paakaupungista. Hotel Centr on pienehko ilmastoitu (valttamattomyys!) hotelli aivan Marigotin keskustassa, keskella Rolexin, Cartierin, Lacosten ym. merkkiliikkeita.

Toivottavasti usein! Kirjoitan blogia myös englanniksi, jotta matkaani pystyy seuraamaan myös kansainväliset ystäväni. Lähden matkaan ystäväni Katin kanssa. Matkasuunnitelmamme pähkinänkuoressa: Matkamme alkaa Lappeenrannasta, josta lähdemme torstaina 22.2. iltajunalla kohti Helsinkiä. Lennämme perjantai aamuna 07:35 Air Francen lennolla Pariisiin, josta jatkamme muutaman tunnin odottelun jälkeen kohti Karibiaa ja Martiniquen saarta. Päivän saarella oltuamme jatkamme lentäen matkaamme kohti St. Martinin saarta, josta 27.2.2007 nousemme Kuunari Helenan kannelle ja osallistumme 12 päivän purjehdukseen Karibianmeren sinisillä aalloilla. Kotimatka takaisin talviseen Suomeen alkaa 11.3. Mutta sitä en s... read more
