After spending a month in Puerto Rico, we made our way back through the Spanish, U.S., and British Virgin Islands in order to be back in St. Martin by the first week of April. After returning to St. Martin we had guests from Fort Worth for a week. While they were here we traveled to the French side of St. Martin where we visited Marigot, Grand Case, Tintamarre, and Orient Beach. We enjoyed the street party in Grand Case where vendors bring their wares every Tuesday night to sell in booths along the road by the beach. At Orient Beach we visited the Butterfly Farm which was enjoyable. Next we sailed to St. Barths. We stopped along the way for the guys to scuba dive at Ile Fourchue. St. Barths is a lovely island with many ... read more

We are still in St Maarten. It has just been over two weeks since we arrived back from Mexico and time has flown. It has been two weeks of hard work getting Woodsia in ship shape for her voyage. Our days start at 8am and are lucky to finish by 6pm. It has been hot sweaty work but we are slowly getting there. Achievements to date include; • Install of a new hot water system • Cradle for our 10 man life raft (bloody heavy) • Steal work for solar panels and radar (we can also use to winch dingy from the stern) • Install of solar panels and solar controller (we now have enough power to support a small country) • Radar • Extra Battery We have made some great friends that have made the ... read more

Love Marigot Bay. The French really know how to make you welcome. $5 Euro to check in...Didn't even look at our passports...Went for lunch at L'Armantine, took Non Linear. This restaurant offers specials for lunch everyday. These particular day they had Carpaccio de Beouf, for those of you that do not know French, it is raw beef, with a caper sauce, topped with Parmesan cheese, for $10 Euros per person, includes fries and a salad. We noticed our lady waitress, had improved her English in a year. Pete made sure to let her know. In order to find this restaurant, if your looking from Marigot Bay to shore, look for the green building, with palm protruding through the roof. To the right of this green building, there is a white 3 story building. On bottom floor, ... read more

We got in about 10.30pm to St Maarten. It was a long day. We got to out hotel at about 11 ish only to find no one at reception. Just as we had made other arrangements to stay at a hotel in Philipsburg, someone showed up (about 12.30am). The next day we got to Oyster Pond around 1pm. Woodsia was waiting for us. We reviewed all the work that had been done and found that a number of the hatches still leaked and some small maintenance type stuff not completed. One our first night we met six duchies sitting in the bar. We got talking and found out that they had arrived for the Regatta and that their boat would not be ready until the following day. So Si kindly offered them to stay on our ... read more

St. Martin had allot of diversities. It's like little Europe in the Carribbean. There are so many different nationalites living harmoniously together. The Airport as well as the Cruise ships are situated on the Dutch side of the island. Along with the Casinos, Nightclubs and lots of shopping in the town of Phillipsburg. The main street had scores of shops with gorgeous jewelery as the most popular item to buy, along with lots of souvineer shops. And then you pass through a hotel lobby or a restuarant from the main street after shopping, to the beach! It's great to sit at one of the many restuarants and people-watch as people stroll by on the cement walkway that paralells the beach. View of St Martin from the airplaneAnd looking out, you see the beautiful blue-green water and ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten February 28th 2008

We arrived in St Maarten on the 1st Feb 2008 after being in transit for 50 hrs. We stayed on the beach outside of Marigot for three days allowing us the time to visit Woodsia and get some admin out of the way. Beautiful island though it is very much Europe meets 3rd world. On first inspection, the mix didn't feel right. But like all things you become accustomed to the culture and after a few days you wonder what all the concern was about. We did find it very expensive as the french side uses Euros rather than US$. Just getting to the other side of the island was costing up to US$30. We went and visited Woodsia on the second day we arrived. While Si crawled all over the boat (literally), I sat on ... read more
