Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten February 21st 2007

I do not think it was sea sickness because it was coming out both ends, but whatever it was, it hit me good while we were in St. Maarten so I do not remember much and/or can tell you much about our time there. I remember waking up in the middle of the night with an upset stomach. I got up early because I signed up to go deep sea fishing. I can not count the number of times I went to the bathroom and kept wondering if it was so smart to fishing, but knew I could not get my money back and being the tightwad that I am, I decided to tough it out. I drown myself with Mark's Pepto Bismol, which seem to help settle things, but I still was not well. We ... read more

Rocky seas, February Crew Activities and preparing for a month of new adventures. Like previously mentioned we are heading to the Southern Caribbean. The Ocean is very rocky tonight and I am feeling very queasy. I am sure that some sea sickness pills and a few Malibu and Pineapples will take care of that. It is very easy to see how people onboard cruise ships develop alcohol problems. When one of the VERY few places that you can go and relax is the Crew Lounge or Crew Bar, and drinks are the price of Phil’s in Waterloo (All of you from back home know what I am talking about - and for the rest of you 1 drink =$ 1.50) on top of that there really isn’t anywhere to spend your money onboard either. My alcohol ... read more

Today we’re back in Sint Maarten/Saint Martin. The last time we were here felt forever ago - it was my first port & only 4th day on the ship. That whole first cruise is just a big blur. Brooks & I were spoiled with another free excursion today. This time it was the Explorer Island Tour and it took us around pretty much the entire island: from Philipsburg, to Orient Bay, around Pic Paradis, to Marigot, around the entire lagoon by boat, to Simpson Bay Village and back to Philipsburg again. It was fantastic to get to see so much of the island, both the french and dutch sides and to get the historical/cultural background that I think it so integral to travel. We also had a bit of a party - the boat portion of ... read more

Another little paradise is St. Maarten Island. Half owned by the French and the other half the Dutch. For this adventure Linda and I signed up for a drive your self-jeep tour of the island. Whatever kind of vehicle they were they were much classer than a jeep. Linda and I ended up with one all to ourselves as the group was two short. We went as a caravan and we each had a radio that our American guide would tell us to turn left, right etc. None of us got lost and we had no accidents. This was more like an adventure. At St Thomas I signed up for a bike ride that was cancelled because there were not enough takers. This jeep ride was great. On the French side near Orient Beach I saw ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten November 22nd 2006

I flew down to St. Maarten via Toronto the week of Nov. 11-18 for a much-appreciated vacation. Two reasons for going: to attend Sonya and Kevin's wedding and to spend some time with Sarah. Sarah is living in St. Maarten teaching at an international school on the Dutch side so acted as host and tour guide for the group that flew in, which included Sonya and Kevin, Wendy, John, Kevin and myself. It was my first time in the Caribbean and I think it was much better than staying at an all-inclusive resort because I got to experience more of the island. Equipped with my new waterproof Pentax (which should outlast my previous 3 cameras which met their end on beaches) I got lots of pics including beach and underwater shots. By the way, on a ... read more

Our family of seven, Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle and three children rented a villa on the beach in St. Martin for the week. We elected to stay on the French side of the island. We thought the food would be better? Not really, the villa choices were better and allowed us a beautiful spot directly on Long Beach. Not a short drive from the airport, but our villa representatives met us at the airport, helped us acquire rental cars, and led us through a maze of dirt roads to our final destination. On our way there I had thoughts of panic. The island was very poor looking along the way and I was worried I had led my family astray. Was our island paradise going to be an island nightmare? Did I mention how hot it ... read more

St. Maarten is an island that is owned by the French and by the Dutch. St. Maarten is the Dutch side, and St. Martin is the French side. Our ship docked on the Dutch side, but we wanted to see both sides of the island. We decided to go on a bus tour that would take us all around the island. Our first stop on the tour was Orient Beach, which is a nude beach because it is on the French side. Thankfully, we didn't see any nude people when we were there. Another stop on our tour was at a shopping area on the French side. We had to be back at the bus at a certain time to leave and continue on our tour. We were back in time, but one couple on our ... read more

Green and blue waters Went fishing in St. Maarten Caught some fish…release. Today’s port of call is Philipsburg, St. Maarten. We started our morning by eating. Did you expect me to say that we started off the day by jogging 3 miles on the deck? Haha So we started with a buffet breakfast at the Windjammer. Having breakfast in the Windjammer always reminds me that I love me the breakfast! They have such a wide selection starting with a bunch of different fruit like cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, grapes, apples and bananas. Then it is onto the heartier foods like the breads, buns, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, pancakes, pastries and baked goods, hash browns and the toasted bread that you can request such as bagels or toast. There is also a section where you can ... read more

ST. Maarten/St. Martin Phillipsburg Capitol of St. Maarten (Dutch) Mariget Capital of St. Martin (French) Mac was awake during the night with a case of diarrhea and stomach cramps. He decided he did not feel well enough to leave the ship so Marci left for her own adventure. Nice air-conditioned bus for this trip around the island. This Island is part French controlled and part Dutch controlled. The border is only marked with a monument and people freely cross the border. This island is drier than the other islands. When Marci returned to the ship, we had some lunch and both went ashore long enough to walk around the dock area. Did not go in to town. Four ships tied up to the dock means that there were approximately 8000 tourists there that day. ... read more
