And so, to St Lucia, a sovereign island country in the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. The island was previously called Lyonola, the name given to the island by the native Amerindians and later, Hewanorra, the name given by the native Caribs. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 square kilometres and reported a population of 165,595 in the 2010 census. It's capital is Castries. We last visited here five years ago when we did the standard touristy things of the Pitons, Soufriere, the volcano and sulphur pools, botanic gardens and waterfalls. We felt neither the need nor the requirement to do this again and ... read more

When we awoke this morning, we were docked in Castries, the capital city of St. Lucia. The island is famous for being very verdant and lush as well as for it's famous landmark, The Pitons. We signed up for a full island tour which would last most of the day. Included in this tour was a drive through the rainforest, a stop at a fishing village, a stop at a volcano, a hike to a waterfall, and a stop at the town of Soufriere. The large amount of rainfall the island receives is responsible for the lush vegetation and that was evident this morning. We left the ship to join our tour and the skies were overcast with sporadic drizzle. The group was split up into 2 vans as we drove through downtown Castries. Like ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Saint Lucia October 26th 2007

Sorry for the rather long gap since my last post, it has been a busy week on Ocean Star, with the shipmates exploring St. Lucia and learning how to do underwater surveys. St. Lucia is an extremely beautiful island, particularly when you approach it from the south: there are two mountains called Grande and Petit Piton that rise vertically from the sea and form part of a World Heritage Area, which means it is protected from further development or construction. We moored at the base of Petit Piton in the clearest turquoise water I have ever seen. Below us the reef plummeted almost straight down and then in front of us the cliff skyrocketed upwards to a height of 2,600ft. I made the most of our three day stay to snorkel and dive as much as ... read more

Day three came & went...and it is safe to say that it was our best yet! Because we are here on the 'Romantic package' there are a few things that came included that we have been taking advantage of. Free breakfast EVERY morning...GOOD STUFF. Plus we had a free dinner here at The Bourdeau Restaurant...where the food is just delicious! Another perk was either a 4 hour horse ride, or a 1/2 a day on a yacht tour. So we opted for the yacht ride, and that choice was such an excellent one. We were up at 7:30 because the Captain was to pick us up at 8:30 at the main Marina Village (about a 5 minute walk from our hotel). We had breakfast and the captain came to meet us at the restaurant. He ... read more

We woke up this morning & enjoyed some St. Lucian cuisine...very good! The milk isn't warm so that's always a plus... We wanted to spend our day laying & swimming over at Marigot Bay, but when we got there, well, let's just say it wasn't very nice... Sooo we took a 'water taxi' over to the Northern tip of the island. We passed Castries (the most populated city here) and saw Rodney Bay, and finally docked at Pigeon Island. Our water taxi driver knows everyone so said he would stay around the island and take us back whenever we were ready... so we ate (met a nice family from NY), climbed up a moutain to see the French Fort Ruins (where we had the MOST AMAZING view of the island, actually on a very clear ... read more

Hi Guys! Sam & I are finally here!! We wish everyone could see the scenery! I'm going to post some of the pictures that we have taken so far...(if I tried posting them all, your computers would blow up because Sam takes 5647 pics a second :D) Our plane ride went smoothly, I was sitting behind toddler, who apparently was teething, but besides that it was alright. We got to St. Lucia at about 2:30pm, but with the immigration line & getting the cab, we didnt leave the airport until about 3:15. Okay so, did anyone know that they drive on the wrong side of the road here?! I totally spazzed when I saw it. Sam was actually going to try and go in the front of the cab with the driver, when he noticed ... read more

Arriving in Rodney Bay, we anchored close to the beach. We had previously met 2nd Millenium, we anchored close to them. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Lucia Pete checked engine, found water in transmission. Melody on 2nd Millenium, gave us name of mechanic Tony George and his cell number. Pete called him, made appointment. Turned out it was a leaky oil cooler for the transmission. We were able to pick a used one up from another cruiser for $60 US. We toured the island with a group, Eaudree, Sea Schell, Raven, Prim Rose and us. We spent 2 weeks in St. Lucia, 1 week anchored out, Moon Sail, Cheetah II, Non Linear, Dock Queen, Chateau, Sol Y Mar arrived. The marina had a special going on if you came in with a buddy boat, they would charge 17 cents a ... read more

Rodney Bay was very interesting. When Pete checked the transmission fluid, he found it was milky. Ouchy...I am thinking, tranny is gone. Miles from anywhere. We were fortunate that a cruiser we knew, Second Millennium, was anchored behind us. Melody new a mechanic in this island. Pete called him right away, he was able to look at the tranny next morning. So Pete took dinghy into marina, brought him back. Turned out to be the oil cooler. Went looking for one, Temptress, had 2 on board. We bought one from him. But want to tell this experience for posterity. While at anchored, not having found the part for a few days. We could not move. Here comes a tropical wave, we prayed the anchor would hold. We tossed, turned, heeled and what not. Fortunately the anchor ... read more

Semi final AUS v SA Central America Caribbean » St Lucia » Castries By Doug and BecApril 25th 2007Doug Taylor and Bec FidlerWhat a joke. We paid $130US each to sit in the stinking hot sun only to watch a complete white wash. Still, the Aussies are outrageously fabulous and just watch them take that 3rd cup in a row!! What a way to spend Anzac Day. Lest we forget. (How freaking brilliant we are...)... read more
