Playa Las Lajas Las Lajas Beach is ten miles of unspoiled, sandy beach that sits between the estuary of two major rivers of Chiriqui; Rio San Felix and Rio San Juan. It is known for being the wildest beach in Panama. As I breathed the fresh clean air, I saw nothing but lush tropical trees, and green mountains. On the other side, blue waters and fine sand. But warm sand and salty sea breezes are only part of the experience. If you are someone who has never been to a beach more than a mile from a Hilton, this is somewhere you need to be. Here there is the beach and nothing but. google3752fbee1dd47ee2.html... read more

Geo: 8.24538, -81.8702O.K! It's Barb's turn to report on this great trip, so I'll try to summarize some of the highlights. Yesterday was an idyllic day of relaxation at the beach. Because our house is so close to the beach, there was a lot of back and forth. Frolicking in the surf, with and without boogie boards, beachcombing, etc. Dinner (after an unintentional scenic route to get there) was at an outdoor pizza place, run by a real Italian, waitress Spanish speaking only, of course, so that was interesting, and really good food (not all pizza). Today was our Boca Chica (1 1/2 hours away) adventure, a pre-planned day trip to the marina there where the big fishing trips go out of. Getting places has been interesting because they really don't seem to use addresses around ... read more

Geo: 8.24538, -81.8702Well, we left Panama City about 11 am yesterday, arrived here at about 6 pm. Made a few stops along the way, one stop was at a roadside bread store? That's not a real accurate description, they sold fruit drinks, and some other yummy looking things, as well as lotto type tickets. I Bought a loaf of their famous cheese bread and a loaf of crusty kalamata bread, both were great. We stopped in Santiago and bought some groceries then bought some chicken when we got to Las Lajas. Arrived at the house and we're greeted by the caretaker for the two houses and condos that are here, a very nice gal does this and showed us the house. We have 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, a living room, dining room, and kitchen ... read more

Panama Canal, interesting!
Warning as you go into the parking lot!

Tuesday there is a little local craft market here that we decided to check out. It was somewhat disappointing, as it was mostly the same stuff we can get in our own craft market at home, except for a couple of stands where the Kuna Indians were selling their traditional embroidery work. It is quite colorful, represents Panama and not something we can get at home so I bought a couple of pieces to make pillows out of. It was still rainy here in Boquete, so we decided to take a drive to the Pacific side to a little beach resort another couple had told us about. This place is about 1 1/2 hours south of David, which is 1 hour south of Boquete. After we got clear of the nighmare road construction between Boquete and ... read more

Finally we could discover what Panama has to offer: the place where we started our trip is Las Lajas. We live here since last june and we fell in love with this place because is a quiet little town surrounding by green hills and with lovely houses , lots of flower gardens and close to a wonderful 15 miles sandy beach! Walking on the sand without shoes at sunset time is all you can desire in your life: freedom. Going to the left side of the beach we arrived to the outfall of the San Felix river: the sea waves become bigger and there are a lot of birds like parrots, herons and pelicans and it’s a great fishing spot. We also saw two mantas ray dancing in the water! Then we went by car to ... read more

So.... it's been forever. Ha- my last post was in February no? Well ok, after establishing that I am in fact alive and kicking still, I can let you know what I've been up to. I’m living in a beautiful and teensy town called San Félix which is on the edge of the western highlands of Panamá. It’s not on a map but it’s close to the Las Lajas beach on the pacific coast which you might be able to see if you’re trying to find me. What on earth am I doing here? I’m living in a tiny house with a woman named Magdalena, a little 39-year old Colombian doctor who’s doing a research project in the indigenous Ngöbe-Buglé reserve that we’re practically ontop of here. She's maybe 4-foot-11, 90lbs and a serious hoot to ... read more

The first Oktoberfest in the region Chiriqui of Panama was held 2009. I couldn´t believe what I found at my travel through Panama in the region Chiriqui. I found an original copy of the Oktoberfest in Germany. It took place at the amazing Las Lajas Beach (Playa Las Lajas) inside the El Mundo Bar (http://www.elmundobar.com ). The Owners are German and they told me that this was the first Oktoberfest in Chiriqui and they want to repeat it every year. They played German Party music and offered “Schweinebraten”, “Bretzel”, “Weisswürste” and as well original Oktoberfest Beer from Paulaner Munich and all visitors had a lot of fun . I was very impressed to find an Oktoberfest copy at this beautiful beach with the same spirit like in Germany. If I be around the Playa Las Lajas ... read more

(con't from boquete) David (pronounced Dah-veed) is a great place to regroup, which i did a couple times. it's in a perfect location midway betwen the mountains and the beaches. a hotel cost me $27 (though the bed pillows were bulky couch cushions in a pillow case) and it gave me another chance to people watch. I explored the nearby Pacific beaches, which are very desolate and rural. this is farm country, and towns are neat and tidy with horses and bicyles more common than cars. The day i was traveling it rained all afternoon and evening and i was glad to find Cabanas de Panama at Las Lajas at literally the end of the road given my small SUV didn't have high clearance (see photo). I paid $30 a night for a private cabana (no ... read more

We heard from fellow travellers that the ziplines in Nicaragua are cheaper and just as exciting as the ones in Costa Rica. We took the van part way up the volcano just outside Granada where the canopy tours are located, and experienced them. Big ceiba trees supported the ziplines, and thankfully us. Supposedly a 500 lb person could survive them! Dad and I were latched onto the lines and flung across the jungle of trees and coffee plants. The guides helped us do tricks such as the superman or upside-down sliding. Satisfied from the thrill, we cooled down in a cafe which looked out from the volcano. The same day, we took a motorboat ride around the Granada islands in Lake Nicaragua. We bargained the boat price from $20 to $10 and received an hour of ... read more
