October 7th we landed in Bocas Del Toro. Bocas is a great little grouping of small to medium size islands of the Western (kind of Northern) part of Panama. We took a small twin prop plane in from Panama City and landed at the Bocas "International" airport (and you thought Albany international airport was a joke). They took Berny's lighter away from him at the local airport in Panama, and then proceeded to give a few lucky folks sitting in the front of the plane a first rate "tour" of the cockpit area - oh well!! Bocas is great. We met up with a young fellow - Ozzy- at the airport and he got us a taxi to the local boat taxi area. We are renting a house on and Island called Isla Carenero. All of ... read more

Well another month another entry...... So the Boarder was about as much fun as drinking a cup of cold sick, but Finally we made it through and with a little help from our new found friend, we were able to skip the line for the taxis. The taxi took us to a boat to head out to the beautiful Boscas Del Toro island group. The Taxi boat driver should have been in a jet boat, he was some driver. There were so many logs in the small canals, and to get round he would just turn the boat at the last second and then whip it around to make sure the motor did not hit. The Canals were in the middle of rain forest and it was not until some 40 mins at top speed that ... read more

After leaving Tortuguero, we hopped a bus down to Puerto Viejo and spent a couple days here dodging drug dealers and other equally repulsive lowlifes such as bad smelling hippies hawking necklaces. We got out of there pretty quickly. We crossed the border into Panama across a rickity old train bridge (pictured) which was fun. It reminded me of the illegal bridge crossing that must be done after rafting the upper Animas, but Ten High was not involved. Panama has been great! Nice people, cheap food, the best beer so far (Panama cerveza its called), and incredible islands. We took a small boat out to the large island of Bocas Del Toro on the caribbean side of Panama. It is part of a large archipeligo of beautiful and remote islands. Liz and I set up shop ... read more

Our boat ride out to Bocas

At last the beach!!! Another early start to catch the 4.5hr bus ride to Changuinola, another small cramped bus that stops every 5minutes to pick up short stop passengers. The air con is so high, I´m freezing but luckily a woman with a baby complains so they open the windows to let the heat in. I arrive at 2 and the boat isn´t until 3.30 so I stop for some lunch. I get a taxi to finca 64 and run for the boat which I can see in the ´dock´. Unfortunately it´s full so I have to wait for the last one of the day at 5.30!! The ´dock´is one jetty with a shack selling tickets and the boat is a 10 seater motor boat. At 5.30 we climb aboard and start the hour trip, it´s ... read more

Hello eveyone, Here is a big hello from Panama, well a small island called Bocas Del Torro. It is very relaxed and hot here. Which means i am very chilled out buut slightly burnt!!! I did rememeber my hat but Dave forgot to remind me a bout my sun lotion. I am not sure how much i can blame on him these days... Well since my last installment, we (a group of us that keeps getting smaller from Raleigh) have been travelling together. After finishing up at field base we all travelled by bus to a beach town called Chauita, it is great and is Famous for producing a coconut rum. We spent two days there relaxing in the sun, pool and eating beautiful sea food before moving a little further down the coast to a ... read more

Well here we are in yet another costal carribean town, this one has no beach but plenty of docks instead. The journey here was one off the easiest so far... We knew the day was going to be a good one when we got to the bus stop and it was already occupied by a magician, we´re talking the big black top hat effort here, and on the near by beach two pigs were fighting over scraps with a pack off dogs, you don´t get that in Manchester. The border from Costa Rica to Panama we used was an abandoned railway bridge (yes it was an official border, we got our passport stamped and every thing). There is something quite strange about moving from one country to another on a rickerty old bridge with missing planks ... read more

After Puerto Viejo, we headed down to the next country south called Panama. We waited in the immagration line in the boiling sun for over an hour we were piled onto a mini bus and taken to a river boat. Here we were told though that the boat was full and there were no more till late that afternoon. Somehow within a few minuites we were in another car which took us over a mountain full of banana plantations and finally made it on another boat to the islands off Bocas Del Torro. Bocas Del torro is a group of islands of the caribbean coast. A small boy Migel who was 11 years old saw us looking a little confused on the main island ended up organising in about 2 seconds for a boat to take ... read more

well, we made it to panama! yesterday we took a 6am bus out of san jose to sixaola, where we walked across the border (a shanky, falling down, railroad bridge. after waiting in the heat for our stamps, we finally crammed into a van...and the door fell off. oy vey. anyways, they got back on...kinda...and we had a 30 min ride to changuinola where we caught a marine taxi to bocas del toro. chad LOVED the ride, it was so amazon like. in bocas we were dropped off on Isla Colon in Bocas Town, the ¨big¨city. then we took a small boat-taxi ($2 a piece) to the island of bastimentos where we found a super cheap place to stay called tio tom. he´s quite the character. our room (aka shacky cabin) is built right over ... read more

Hi! Dan is feeling better :) We spent the last 4 days in Bocas del Torro, which is a cluster of islands on the Carribean side of Panama. I really like this town. We stayed at a great little place called Cocomo on the Sea and they had kayaks for us to use whenever we wanted. One day we kayaked around the island and out to "the pointe" where Dan had fun in the huge waves. One day we ventured to a beach called Starfish Beach. We had to take a taxi to a certain part of the island and walk through some jungle and mangrove areas to the beach. There were many huge starfish! It was pretty cool. There were some really good restaurants in Bocas. Our favorite is called Buena Vista. They have ... read more
