The main street in Bocas started some kind of transformation on the 16th of February. Ten beer tents lined the park across from Heike, a huge stage two doors down adorned with four levels of speakers, a semi-trailer truck with a high pressure water hose, fried chicken and bread stands everywhere……and the people start to gather. The festivities started Friday morning, people started gathering in the streets; families, children, young crowds and the old. The energy was brewing for an exciting 5 days of partying and celebrating. Meanwhile the guests’ at Heike were getting pretty excited about the party, starting the festivities early with beers in one hand and water guns in the other. We played all day with the local kids having water fights, tickle wars and dancing in the streets to the reggae roots, ... read more

As required of good Catholics, Paige and I tried to fast as much as possible without sapping all of our energy in order to be able to go to the beach today - me for lounging and swimming, her for surfing. Her friends that we ran into told us that a good beach break (the reef breaks are pretty intense for surfing, and there is no where for us non-surfers to sit). So off we went to Isla Bastimentos, to Wizards Beach. The water taxi couldn’t take us straight to the beach because then he would have to drop us off in the water. The waves are too strong for those boats to approach the beach directly. To solve this, we get dropped off at the dock that has a path to Wizards, which we are ... read more

After arriving at the delightful hour of 4:45 AM in Almirante, the mainland entrance to the Bocas island area, we caught a taxi in the dark, sketchy town to the water taxi dock. We waited with the other sleepy people from our bus for the first water taxi at 6 AM to come take us to Isla Colon, the largest island in Bocas with Bocas Town on it. On our way there, it started to rain, which up to this point in my travels has not been a problem, because it is the dry season. Dry = no rain, but not this morning. The town had been getting steady rain for the past few days, which is unfortunate as there are only a couple paved roads. Since every hostel/ low-budget hotel I had called earlier said ... read more

Well, I decided that it may be a good time to catch up on where I have been and what I have been doing since I have returned to Central America and Bocas. It has been a crazy four months so I hope I remember to fill everyone in on what has been happening. Abby and I started out visiting some of our friends in El Salvador at the beginning of October, we had met them last year when we were traveling and took the opportunity to see them once again. We spent two weeks in San Salvador, eating pupusas( national dish), drinking beer, hiking, and just spending quality time with some great friends. Abby and I spent most of our time with our friend Juan Carlos. He became our Spanish teacher on a daily basis, ... read more

Well, I didn't expect to be here, but sometimes you just end up on a tropical island. Your chances are better when you're travelling thru central america without much purpose. So, I was in San Jose, and I had a good feeling about the place, like I could live there. I started taking doxycyclin because I have had some crazy health lately, and I think I have pneumonia. Anyway, it's been helping and I hope I'm feeling better, but the progress seems really slow. One night I had really high fever in San Jose. Basically, i was sick and weak the whole time there, so I did almost nothing, and still managed to like the place. It was really clean and seemed like a nice city compared to the other countries I was coming from. Not ... read more

I hear a crackle and little yelps coming from the street outside of Hostel Heike, as I come out the front gates and into the sunlit street, I see crowds gathering across the street. I come upon a man in the street dressed completely in black and red, with a huge mask atop his head. The mask is adorned with bright red fabric and huge white tusks protruding from his face. He has feathers and bells attached to his feet and I can hear the bells as he stomps his feet through the street cracking his whip. Out of nowhere come two others, ‘El Diablos’. Cracking their whips and taunting the people in the streets…. Kids screaming, running and playing with the Devils; apparently Panamanian tradition. If you are outside the white lines on the street ... read more

We arrived in Bocas "Isla Colon" in the morning on December 19 2007. As comical as it was we took a cab to our house, which is located at the end of Main Street. For those of you who have yet to make it to the island the airport is 4 blocks to our house. You could say it was a waste of a quick $5 dollars but the AC in the truck was worth it. After unloading our gear we hooked up with Jeff, John and Jim and got some breakfast at a little place cropped out over the water. I don't remember the name of the eatery, however, I do remember it being very good and very cheap. The day passed by slowly as we took a tour of the Red Frog Resort with ... read more

(written for Ed by one of the beautiful women, Kathy) Dear Friends, Family and Strangers, This is Ed's first foray into the electronic world of blogging. OK, so he had to get a beautiful woman to get it started for him but at least it's started! He WILL attempt to update this on a somewhat regular basis to keep everyone informed of where he is and what he's up to. However I'm certain he won't want this to get in the way of his very busy schedule of snorkeling and kite surfing. For those of you who don't know Ed, he's devilishly handsome, athletic, financially independent and smart gentleman. Ed wants nothing more than to share his great lifestyle with a like-minded woman. A woman that is laid back, athletic, likes to swim, snorkel, do yoga ... read more

I've been living on a yacht in the Beautiful Archipelago of the Bocas Del Toro on the Caribean side of Panama. I find that the yachting life style suits me well! First I spent several days in Panama City, where I met up with Lorena´s Parents, the Deleon's. Lorena was one of my best friends in high school. They were such wonderful hosts and drove me all around. We visited the ruins of the old Panama City (Panama Viejo), the very unique ... read more
