At last the beach!!! Another early start to catch the 4.5hr bus ride to Changuinola, another small cramped bus that stops every 5minutes to pick up short stop passengers. The air con is so high, I´m freezing but luckily a woman with a baby complains so they open the windows to let the heat in. I arrive at 2 and the boat isn´t until 3.30 so I stop for some lunch. I get a taxi to finca 64 and run for the boat which I can see in the ´dock´. Unfortunately it´s full so I have to wait for the last one of the day at 5.30!! The ´dock´is one jetty with a shack selling tickets and the boat is a 10 seater motor boat. At 5.30 we climb aboard and start the hour trip, it´s ... read more

Hello eveyone, Here is a big hello from Panama, well a small island called Bocas Del Torro. It is very relaxed and hot here. Which means i am very chilled out buut slightly burnt!!! I did rememeber my hat but Dave forgot to remind me a bout my sun lotion. I am not sure how much i can blame on him these days... Well since my last installment, we (a group of us that keeps getting smaller from Raleigh) have been travelling together. After finishing up at field base we all travelled by bus to a beach town called Chauita, it is great and is Famous for producing a coconut rum. We spent two days there relaxing in the sun, pool and eating beautiful sea food before moving a little further down the coast to a ... read more

Well here we are in yet another costal carribean town, this one has no beach but plenty of docks instead. The journey here was one off the easiest so far... We knew the day was going to be a good one when we got to the bus stop and it was already occupied by a magician, we´re talking the big black top hat effort here, and on the near by beach two pigs were fighting over scraps with a pack off dogs, you don´t get that in Manchester. The border from Costa Rica to Panama we used was an abandoned railway bridge (yes it was an official border, we got our passport stamped and every thing). There is something quite strange about moving from one country to another on a rickerty old bridge with missing planks ... read more

Hi! Dan is feeling better :) We spent the last 4 days in Bocas del Torro, which is a cluster of islands on the Carribean side of Panama. I really like this town. We stayed at a great little place called Cocomo on the Sea and they had kayaks for us to use whenever we wanted. One day we kayaked around the island and out to "the pointe" where Dan had fun in the huge waves. One day we ventured to a beach called Starfish Beach. We had to take a taxi to a certain part of the island and walk through some jungle and mangrove areas to the beach. There were many huge starfish! It was pretty cool. There were some really good restaurants in Bocas. Our favorite is called Buena Vista. They have ... read more

We have been on the island of Bastimentos here in the Bocas Del Toro Island chain for the past three days and are planning on heading back over the mountains to David tomorrow morning to rent a car for a week. It has been an interesting stay as the town on Bastimentos has no road and loads of trash. The people speak a dialect that combines Indian and Spanish and were pretty friendly considering that they have a constant onslought of white people that they have no idea who they are walking on their sidewalk saying hi to them. After a few days you start to get to see the same people over and over, so that was kind of nice. Arisa and I hiked over the mountains through the rainforest to Wizard Beach, very ... read more

I am on my way back up and man does it feel good. Part of me feels like I´ve been traveling forever and to tell you the truth it is a little odd to be heading back, even though I am excited to be. I need to catch up on this blog, I am still in Panama which I left 2 weeks ago... So, From Bocas Brava I went to Boquete which is a little mountain town... I had heard some people describe it as similar to a Colorado town, but could not for the life of me see what they meant, it being a sinlge season town... but once I was there I understood. It is everything that you love about mountain towns in Colorado in the spring. I stayed here 2 days, did ... read more

Back in Naranjo after a fantastic trip. We had originally planned to head to the city of David in Panama and buy ourselves a run about. Unfortunately, David offers little, and this time around it was definitely not offering us a car. Such circumstances put us on the next minibus over the hill and straight to Bocas del Toro, the Caribbean. The trip itself is quite beautiful, and it’s worth staying awake if you want to take in the beautiful scenery - this information is second hand, as I was the idiot that slept 3 hours and 45 minutes of the 4 hour ride. To get anywhere in Bocos Del Toro, one must take a Water Taxi. Àngel was enjoying himself haggling the prices down again. We opted for a whole days snorkeling tour around the ... read more

Let me start off by saying --- Bocas is amazing, Panama is redeemed, and all is well. And i'll follow that with another apology...it's so hard to keep this updated!! Either I am having too much fun, internet is crappy, or internet is tooo expensive to spend an hour or two doing photos and whatnot!! And besides...all the best stories have to be told..not read! In this blog you will hear me rant and rave about the wonderful and incredible and beautiful and funnest place in central america (so far...and well...i guess it´s really the only place i've been since panama city...so..hmm...maybe not the best parameters...ANYWAY) Bocas del Toro. Caribbean coast of Panama. Stunning! I was supposed to be there for the weekend..and ended up there for almost two and a half weeks! Talk about ... read more

Getting out of Cartagena by plane took a whille as the airline and police required a few hours to check us 4 gringos in. As we were going with a Dash 8, there were only a few other passengers with us and we nearly left on time! Arriving in Panama City was a bit of a suprise as the skyline looks more like New York than Central America. Pnama is full of retired US Americans and you can enjoy a lot of fast food and real chocolate! We spent 2 days in Panama City having breakfast in Dunkin Donuts, dinner in Wendy´s, going out etc. Panama is trying hard to attract foreign investors and retirees and they seem to have some success as it is full of Americans over 60. We then decided to take ... read more

So yes, the border crossing really was as crazy as I had heard it would be. When I arrived at the crossing between Costa Rica and Panamá I couldn´t believe that you actually had to walk over this plank bridge from Costa Rica to get to the immigration office on the Panamá side. Basically, the bus drops you off on one side, and then you pick up a different bus on the other side. Who thought of that idea? There were tons of people making crossing as I hobbled with my crutches and a lot of concentration very, very, very carefully across the bridge Add to the picture a few large trucks inching up behind me as Hendrik kept yelling a jesting "hurry up". Think about that scene in Stand By Me and then add ... read more
