From León we decided Ometepe would be a good bet. A pair of volcanic islands - a couple of volcanoes really – in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America. It sounded like a good place to spend a few days just relaxing and...stuff. We'd been moving pretty quickly for a while, so we figured a short break was in order. To get to Ometepe we had to catch a ferry from San Jorge. There was a couple of options, but this seemed the easiest. From León there were a number of bus changes, but eventually we got to San Jorge. At the last change we had been scammed, but only slightly – the tout bloke had assured us that the bus would go directly to San Jorge – instead we were ... read more

You could almost define Nicaragua by what it is not. The food is not as good as Mexico – at least as far as spice and heat goes – but you can get some really nice meals. There isn't the level of security that you find in El Salvador or Honduras but we felt safe. The sellers of souvenirs and such are not as insistent as in Guatemala. It is a lot bigger than Belize. The population has more obvious civil liberties than in Cuba. There seem to be less law and order issues and, interestingly, less apparent policing than other places. It is less 'touristy' than Costa Rica and seems somewhat less prosperous. But defining the place in these terms would be a little unfair I think. We didn't really know what to expect. It ... read more

The next morning on Ometepe was early for Darío. He had to meet his hiking group at 6.45am to catch the 7am bus to the next town to start the trail. I had a smallish sleep in until 8am. I had a very lazy morning, I spent almost 2 hours at breakfast so i could catch up on internet usage, so ate very slowly to use the wifi at the restaurant. Plus they have a laundry there so I caught up on that too. I went and did some essentials shopping including postcards and water before deciding it was maybe time to go and hire a bicyle and do some exploring of my own. Robinson, the guy who owns a motorcycle rental place and organised the tour for Dario was where I wanted to hire my ... read more

What's up everyone? As I sit here on the south part of the Island overlooking Lake Nicaragua, I'm taking time reflecting on life and How It's really amazing that I am in this place. For those who do not wish or have no interest in seeing other parts of the world, I say you are truly missing out, but on the other side of the coin I am of course Bias on that topic so I can understand. Ok moving on to my adventure here, The first day I woke up early around 530am in SJDS to catch a cab from my hostel to the San Jorge Ferry for Ometepe, I was the only Foreigner on the ferry which was a nice change I suppose, My first impressions of Lake Nica was "wow this shit is ... read more

We met Ramona on the ferry crossing to Ometepe, Nicaragua. Ramona is a green, rambling VW like ours from Sandra's home state of Jalisco, Mexico on it's way to Argentina. Ramona's crew include a husband and wife from Mexico and Argentina, their 5 year old son and a dog. Yes, a dog. In the car. All the way from Mexico to Argentina. Yikes. We got to spend a little time with them while we were in Ometepe. We were supposed to visit an orphanage on the island but our clutch had other plans. It was disappointing to miss it. Here are a few photos of this very recommendable place.... read more

Ah, once one gets behind on a travel blog, it just snowballs. So, now I'm in Panama City, but I spent the better part of the last two weeks on the islands of Lake Nicaragua. Headed with the group from San Juan Del Sur to Isla de Ometepe, which required a pleasant one hour ferry ride on the lake. Third world ferries are always interesting. I remember laying on the roof in the sun, somewhere between the bananas and a motorcycle. The island itself is beautiful - two volcanic cones rising up with a land bridge connecting them. We decided to stay on the distant, more remote side of the island. The bus rides on the island are incredibly slow and bumpy, but one just gets used to this sort of thing. Stepping off the bus ... read more

It rained all night, but turned into a beautiful day as we mounted up for a horseback ride through the plantain trees. Robyn got the little stubborn horse, rather fitting, and my horse was a true leader. He always wanted to be in the front and got annoyed when I held him back to take photos of Robyn's staggering steed. We made our way down the dirt road with the cool morning breeze and the occasional spattering of rain. When we reached our destination, "Ojos de Agua" the sun came out to reveal the crystal spring-fed waters that flow from these two pools out into lake cocibolca. Our guide explained to us various flora and fauna in spanish as we went along. On the way back I spotted some monkey way up in the trees. I ... read more

Got up early, breakfasted at the market and caught at $10 cab to the port at San Jorge. Just in time for the ferry to Moyogalpa and from there we bit the bullet and got a $20 cab to the hotel in Playa Santo Domingo. Villa Paraiso is a cush place compared to Istiam where I stayed before. I had reserved a $29.00 double for us, but we soon realized that the room they put us in was much nicer than my reservation. When we asked them about it they said it was actually the $60/night room but that they would give it to us for $50. Umm, no, we´d rather just move. Soon it became $40/night. Still not cheap enough. She offered $35 to which we said we´d still like to see the other $29 ... read more

Hello all...its been a while! I have been so busy for the last...well however long it was since my last blog. A lot has happened since then...for example, we are now on a new continent! I shall start where we left off, heading for Ometepe Island in Nicaragua - please excuse me for not going into massive detail on every point, you would be reading a novel rather than a blog otherwise! So... Ometepe is a Beautiful Island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua (which is 188km long and 80km wide!) which consists of 2 volcanoes covered in jungle and not a lot more - a couple of towns and fincas is all you get! We got the ferry across the lake (1hr) which was just enough time for Sarah to develop seasickness for the first ... read more
