Well...we finally made it to the twin volcano island in the largest tropical lake in the world, Lago de Nicaragua..also the home of the only freshwater shark known to man. It's the place ALL the backpackers talk about and a perfect spot for a crater climb! ..now here's the deal..we got up at about 5am thinking the world was coming to an end after having tossed and turned all night to the sound of the craziest storm either of us has ever experienced..we even ran out to check if there was a lake of lava pouring down the hill to polish us off, thinking with that much noise and rumbling the volcano must have been about to erupt! False alarm...nonetheless, after about an hour and a half following a very soggy guide up the side of ... read more

I´ve changed my mind about Nicaragua, although I never did fall in love with Granada. Maybe Leon is just more my style. Nicaragua on the whole, however, is ranking right up there with Guatemala for me now.... I am loving it here! I ended up in Granada for a few days, again sucked in by an always-fun, all-inclusive hostel called The Bearded Monkey. I met Debra, Tom and Jim in the hostel bar at the end my first slightly traumatic day. We ended up at a disco, dancing to the Nica (Nicaraguan) beats, and became fast friends. The next day, I decided to visit Lago de Apoyo, a Crater Lake just outside of Granada. About eight of us piled into the back of a pickup truck, had innertubes dumped on top of us and arrived a ... read more

So I am still a bit behind on my journal entering here because I have been very busy without really doing much here in Granada. Doing a month's worth of errands in the space of 5 days makes for some pretty uninteresting blogging. After we left Santo Domingo on the Isla de Ometepe, we headed to the Volcan Maderas side of the island for a brief stay in Hacienda Merida. Within 30 minutes of being there I wished I had 2 weeks to devote to this place and was somewhat kicking myself for having stayed in Santo Domingo so long. The hacienda is really cool, kind of like a backpacker's resort, with horse rental, kayaks, mountain bikes, volunteer opportunities, Spanish classes available, and .... a real luxury in Central America .... breakfast and dinner buffets. I ... read more

(Journal excerpt 8th Feb 2005) Though i had already been to Isla de Ometepe on account of it being listed among Lonely Planet's list of Central American jewels, my memories of this supposed wonderland were none too marvelous. It had been raining most of the time on my last visit, I had gotten food poisoning, and the jeep we had rented to tour the island dragged along at 5 MPH along the unpaved roads that were worse than most hiking trails I'd seen. Oh, and there were mice in our room and I was plagued with mosquito bites the whole time. However, despite my initial gut reaction not to waste my time going back, I couldn't help but wonder how the newest LP version made the island out to be even more spectacular this time around ... read more

Kids, Everyone in his 20s knows for a fact that life ends at age 30. Then, you reach your 30s and realize that indeed life, as you knew it, has ended. A few try to continue living as if nothing happened - missing both the 30-something experience and not fully enjoying the 20-something stuff anymore. Most, embrace their new life so much that their old 20-something self might as well be turning in his grave. A few leave themselves mental notes from the 20s to the 30s and manage to embrace the best of both. This is the story of one of these mental notes…. in January 2003 (still in my late 20s) I was traveling alone in Nicaragua where I came across, by word of mouth, one of the best backpack’s places I have ... read more
