4 October 2009 Sunday 6:47 pm Haven’t written in a while. The week of medical crap in Managua and the excess of down time and internet searching and emailing and chatting… kind of wore me out. Decided I was thinking too much and it would be better just to get back here and move on with my life instead of all the “what ifs” that were running through my mind. The upside of having to stay longer than I thought in Managua was that I was extremely glad to be back and to have Lenin hold me while I slowly broke down, as opposed to having been alone in a hotel room slowly breaking down. I know, what a great post. I sound like a hot mess and a half. In other news, the mosquitoes are ... read more

For those of you who are out of the loop (which means everyone but family), I have been reevaluating my service and wondering if it´s worth it to stay for the 2nd year. But then I thought, well, does it really matter if I go back to the States right now? Not really. There aren´t any jobs. And no one said the Peace Corps was gonna be easy. And if I stay I will have one more year to speak the ´Spañol every day and save money without student loans hanging over my head and I´ll get to help with the coffee harvest - which ACTUALLY interests me, and get married properly and maybe like build some stoves or something. So it is still a pro vs con thing in my head. But, tomorrow is my ... read more

Okay. So I just saved directions for the visa stuff onto my memory so I can take it home and read it over again. Basically, we filled out the form. He has to fill out a supplemental form, also, that asks things like names of mothers and fathers and military service and last 3 jobs and my contact info and if he has specific travel arrangements made yet. Which he doesn´t. Because it is in bold print NOT TO BUY TICKETS until after the visa is procured. So. Questions answered. Fill out two forms. Go to Bancentro (no Bancentro in Somoto, which means we go to Esteli or Ocotal) and pay $131 - in córdobas - and get a pin number to call the USA for 8 minutes to set up the interview in Managua at ... read more

Well, I am back in Madriz. Matagalpa rocked, though it didn´t quite feel like the 4th of July without a cookout and fireworks. However, Italian food and cold coffee drinks made up for it. So I just went to the post office and had 3 packages! One full of seeds and instant mac n cheese and cheddar broccoli soup packets and gummy fruit snacks - which are awesome! from one eicenogle of DC! Also, two packages from WBrownell´s Spanish class at CHS. One with letters from students - in Spanish! - and postcards of Missourah and a USA map... and another envelope full of seeds. Once again, THANK YOU to everyone who has sent, and continues to send, seeds to add to the Moropoto Women´s Seed Bank. I have been taking photos, but have yet to ... read more

WOW MAIL SHOUTOUTS!!!! So I run into the guy from the post office that delivers around Somoto. He speaks English and is probably the only person in this town who knows my name. I always know it´s him when I hear ¨Hi Molly!¨in Somoto. At any rate, he was like, hey you got a box! And did I ever! All the way from New Zealand! Apparently it takes a helluva lot less time for A BOX OF AWESOMENESS to arrive than, say, the three month letter timeline. Shannon, I opened it in the park but didn´t get through all of it, waiting till I get home... but I DID see CAMOFLAUGE pens and pencils, crayons, and foot powder and let me tell you ALL of these things are necessary in life, ESPECIALLY life abroad! I cannot ... read more

Okay, this is gonna be short as I need to go buy cheese and mangos and catch a bus... however... The ONE day I don´t bring a sacko, I have 3 big, heavy manilla envelopes FULL OF SEEDS from my mother! So I went to go look for a sack. I ended up with a big black trash bag. I have 4 canvas bags at home. But I thought, gee, probably won´t be anything.... And of course there are. Went to the pharmacy because, guess who has another allergy? THIS volunteer. I never have diarrhea. Even though I drink the community water, eat fruit and food that has fallen on the dirt floor, eat all the food that everyone here eats, and rarely get to wash my hands with clean water and soap before I eat. ... read more

Greetings from Nicaragua! Please forward this on to anyone who would be interested in helping a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Nicaragua start a Women´s Group Seed Bank. Things are going well down here. I¨m about to hit my 6 month mark of being in my community and 9 month mark of being in country. And that just blows my mind. Check out my blog mytb.org/mbaade for all of my ramblings and photos of my Peace Corps Volunteer service in Central America... if you´re not already stalking me :) Okay, I¨ll get to the point. Nicaragua has a 6 month dry season... when not much happens... and a 6 month wet season... when everything related to agriculture happens. Everyone is planting. However, the women are lacking basic vegetable seeds to plant in their family gardens. Family ... read more

Well. Here I am. Monday. I got home yesterday afternoon at about 2.30. Immediately dropped my bag and hugged Lenin. It was a long week. And I missed him. So the language workshop ended Thursday night and then we stayed in Managua Thursday and were supposed to go home Friday morning. Except. That Thursday afternoon I came up with some kind of allergy. Started with a rash around my neck and my feet. By Friday morning it was EVERYWHERE. So clearly I went to the PC med office - PCMO - and they said, yup, it´s an allergy to something. Perhaps the other component of the amoxicilin? ... that you´ve been taking for 10 days.... we don´t know. Go to the hospital and see this dermatologist. So I did. And she said, yup, it´s an allergy. ... read more

Okay, I am sick. Like sinus infection, muscle aches, slept all last night without moving, sick. Mostly because the day before yesterday I was pissed the hell off all day and ended up crying... and the only other time that that has happened to such an extent, I also got sick right afterward. Apparently my body cannot handle stress like that here. Even though I take vitamins every day. So. I cancelled English class and came to Somoto to get some damn antibiotics and get over this before it really gets underway. But that´s not why I´m writing. I´m writing a post so that I can post photos of my trip to the cañón de Somoto with Lenin and Ozmancito. So, without further ado, here they are... ps mail shoutouts to my mom, for the newspaper ... read more
