Ok so we had paid $23 for a private air con shuttle bus to take us to Coban at 6am on Thursday morning. Well what a suprise we got! We definitely did not get what we paid for! Yes it was a shuttle mini bus but it dfinitely wasn't air conned and it was definitely not private! It was absolutely cramped and packed full of people I had to sit on the middle seat next to the diver with no leg room what so ever and due to me being so tired, everytime I fell asleep I almost knocked into the driver making him jolt the gear stick! The driver had a personalty failure aswell just to make the journey even more enjoyable! NOT! When we were at the honduran/guatemalan border, we had to use up ... read more

(Day 832 on the road)And so my time in Guatemala was coming to an end. From the great market in Chichicastenango (see last entry), Tino and I embarked on our last few days in the country, the natural wonders of Semuc Champey near Lanquin. One American guy I talked to a few weeks ago had called Semuc Champey the most beautiful thing in the world. As anticipated, my resulting high expectations could only be disappointed. While the blue, terraced pools were certainly beautiful and special indeed, they are most certainly not the most beautiful thing in the world. As always, I found myself comparing this attraction to other I have seen, and instantly Huang Long National Park in Sichuan, China came to mind. Huang Long has a very similar look, but it is decidedly more beautiful. ... read more

From Tikal we're on the well-worn tourist trail to Semuc Champey. It feels strange to be in a micro bus full of tourists with 'TURISMO' emblazoned across the front, but its the most efficient choice of transport to travel the 8 hours between the two tourist spots when we don't have many days left in Guatemala. The road trip starts in the relatively flat terrain of Peten and takes us through country roads that involve undercarriage-graunching speed bumps in every one of what seems like hundreds of tiny villages and even a vehicle ferry ride across a river, finally reaching the amazing steep limestone hills of the area around Coban and then the beautiful village of Lanquin, perched in the hills. The last half hour of our journey from there is by 4 wheel drive on ... read more

"How many guatemalans can you fit in the back of the truck? How many? Uno mas!!(one more)" haha that was the joke of the ride all the way here. it was a 8 hour ride from flores to semuc champey but our driver made it in about 6...no speed limit here!! we are at this hostel place where we have met tons of people. one guy absolutely is like in love with me, ha. but really no kidding, he taught me already how to surf and play guitar!! it´s pretty funny! so basically all we have done is go swimming in the frigid waters of semuc champey, we ate dinner where i had my first beer...first guatemalan beer that it ;) then we went to the guy and asked to play music from his ipod and ... read more

So we arrived at Lanquin after an interesting journey through the mountains on a gravel road after the paving ran out and the humidity just got higher and higher...by time we reached our hostel (El Retiro) we were ready for a swim. We booked a room and headed for the river at the bottom of the hostel to cool down. The hostel was great - a complete change to what we had been used to - cobañas with thatched roofs on stilts with hammocks outside - jungle around and a fast flowing river at the bottom - it was bliss! 10 mins after getting in the water we were asked if we fancied some tubing down the river...of course we did...it was exactly what was required! We jumped in the back of a truck with our ... read more

Not many photos here again due to the camera theft… the few photos (only the Semuc Champey ones… the Tikal ones were pinched off the internet) we have here were kindly donated by a friend we made in Semuc Champey… thanks Sally! Ok so the bus from the Belize-Guatemala border into the city of Flores was.. um.. hair raising to say the least. We waited 3 hours at the bus station (a single room with one fan and no airflow and a lady at the desk who spoke not a word of english). A bus finally turned up at the alotted time and locals started loading up. We still had no luck with communicating so we waved our ticket about and got a nod that we assumed meant that this was indeed the right bus. We ... read more

Hello there, After a false start on Monday morning where my porridge and stomach decided to have a fight, I got up on Tuesday determined to get myself to Flores by nightfall and then onto Tikal the next day to check out some Mayan ruins. Got to the bus station and the very nice man informed me there was no 9.30am bus as they didn´t have a driver and there wouldn´t be one until 2.30am, which meant I would get into Tikal for 3am. After some internal crying and some linguistical trouble due to my still very basic Spanish, I managed to get some info off him of another bus company that was travelling towards Flores. I raced across town with my back pack and just got the next bus heading to Guate City. On the ... read more

Well, I can gladly say I’ve only seen the poop man a few times since the last time I wrote. I actually thought he was finally gone and probably jinxed things by saying so. Yesterday, he was back. Although, I think I will now take him over the new guy. The new guy appeared before when we leaving for school this morning. Somehow, I find it a hard toss up between the guy that craps all over our grate and this guy who enjoys mornings with his hands clearly down his pants. I don’t just mean a little down there. I mean all the way down there, scratching and then bringing his hand back up, staring at whatever he found before flicking it in the air. Luckily, I wasn’t standing close enough to see what he ... read more

The weather is finally changing here in Coban. It’s been pretty nice the last month or so, but there were definitely the occasional gloomy, rainy days. The last few days though, have been so hot that I’m wishing I had a fan in my room. I don’t know that possible because my apartment is usually really cool no matter what time of day. Plus, with the our altitude here, the moment the sun goes down you need a sweater. I can’t exactly afford to buy a fan, so I think I’ll just have to sweat it out for now. Considering the weather I had to put up with when I first got here, the heat is a pleasure. Hopefully now that it’s getting really hot, I will be able to make it to a beautiful beach ... read more

I think things are finally coming together for me. As most of you know, I’ve been working a crazy amount of hours everyday at both school and home. I was putting in 16 hour days most days. 8 hours at school and another 8 hours of lesson planning. It was definitely not my idea of a good time and there were days that I really thought I was going to crazy. But, I’m happy to say those days are pretty much out of the way now. My books finally came in and even though it’s only two books, it has already cut down on my lesson planning so much. The last few days, I’ve spent just as much time on lesson planning as I had been before, except this time I’m not stuck on doing just ... read more
