Yesterday I woke up around 5:30 am (cause I couldn´t sleep) and went to meet the bus for Nueva Alianza, the trip that we are going on this weekend, at 7 am. Like every year, I called my mother for her birthday on May 20 instead of May 23, sometime before 7 am (sorry Mom). Nueva Alianza is an organic coffee and macadamia finca which is owned and operated cooperatively by the campesinos who work it. The patron (the old plantation owner) went bankrupt and lost the farm to the bank. Now, the campesinos must pay off the debt and they will completely own the farm. It was a bit rainy when we got here yesterday, but we went on a nice long hike that was absolutely beautiful. At times, I felt like something was flying ... read more

About three weeks ago (we are so behind keeping this journal up), Tim, Kim, Cari and Henry, who you Bethel kids know is traveling around Central America now (minus his motorcycle) and joined us for a week went to Monterrico. We swam, ate some kicking food at a local restaurant (wonderful fish), and took a tour of the mangrove swamps. ... read more

Whenever I plan to rise early on a free day somehow the alarm keeps moving on a little later until it's not so early. Saturday was no exception. Once I got going, I found myself on a route I had travelled before with a choppy boat ride to Santiago followed by a pick-up to San Lucas. From here some inprecise pronunciation on my part (or too many names beginning with San) meant the next journey was a short (but free) one on discover of the misunderstanding. By this point I was stuck at one of those nothingy places where roads meet and subsquently a Pepsi stand emerges, some kids sell fruit and people wait around with stacks of wood and bundles of grass. If the roads are major enough, whole towns appear, which are normally scruffy, ... read more

With another hangover hanging over us, we decided it was time to hit the beach; Monterrico. We decided not to take the chicken buses (due to the hangover..) and let the kind Doña Mercdes of Hotel Cafetin organize a shuttle for us. In Monterrico life is simple; tranquilo. The main "street" is a muddy/sandy PATH with all kinds of animals; pígs (of all sizes and colours), chicken, dog-pig mixes, snakes, cats, normal dogs. Apart from the animals the place seemed deserted. We did however, find a very nice place to stay, right at the beach! It is a small place (only one dorm for 5 and two doubles) with a bar run by a very nice young guatemalan couple. It is next to Johnny's, the backpacker-nest. It is called El Caracol and we recommend it highly. ... read more

In an effort to upload my pictures I accidentally deleted a very long Blog entry. I hope some of you saw it. I'm not writing it again, but to sum up... We went to the Champerico which is a small town by the beach. It was nice, but of course rustic. On the way back, we went to an archeological site. It was small, but enspired me to see something bigger...Tikal. Moved to a new family because I didn't like the last one. This one is nice. Lots of good food. Wierd home set up. Ask me about it when I get home. I think on Saturday I'm about to do something really stupid. I'm going on an overnight guided hike to the tallest peak in Central America... Tajamulco Volcano. I hear it's difficult, cold, and ... read more

Left Puerto behind yesterday evening, having spent my last day there sitting on a beautiful beach looking out at the surf and discussing with Derek the relative merits of the various waves like two old surf bums. Chose not to head out into them, however, as it felt as if the elbow and shoulder joints of my right arm might have been seperated and reconnected repeatedly the day before, each time I threw myself with one arm over my board into an incoming wave. It is possible that this is a young man's sport... At any rate, another overnight bus ride found us staggering out into early morning heat, homes on our backs and thus moving like snails, with no idea (besides a name - Tapachula) where we were, and even less idea which way we ... read more
