The Corn Islands is a very beautiful place - the water is clear and perfect for diving and snorkeling. I stayed mostly in Little Corn which has no cars and little modern luxuries but is very peaceful......I stayed at the beach in a wooden hut, did nothing for 3 days (chill in the hammock and eat fresh seafood) - good times. The flight to Corn Islands was really scary - the plane was soooooooo small, only 12 people can fit in and the you can feel the wind move the plane, thank God it was only a 1.5 hour flight. I went back to Leon for my last week in Nicaragua & I stayed at a very tranquil hostel - La Tortuga Booluda - where I met up with Josephine, the German girl I met at ... read more

It was a seven hour drive from Antigua thru the outskirts of Guatemala City to Guatemala’s Caribbean’s coast. Guatemala City, with over three million residents is the largest city in Central America. Getting thru the city took an hour and a half. Motorists were courteous but because the lanes are narrow, there were times we came within inches of losing our side mirrors. The rest of the drive was scenic with a smooth two lane road - smoother than most of our roads in California anyway. We passed farm lands and tropical forests. Our destination, Rio Dulce is located on the eastern shore of Lago de Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala. The lake empties into the Rio (river) Dulce which flows to the Caribbean. There are many sail boats and yachts anchored in the area. ... read more

"The ocean is in constant flux, and when you spend a lot of time in it you become like a floating bottle with a message inside; you know you´re going somewhere, sense you have a purpose, but you also know you´re at the mercy of the winds and currents, that surrendering may be your only good option." -Jaimal Yogis Looking out into the sea here at Playa El Tunco, El Salvador, I tend to see quite a few floating bottles. It is, however, doubtful that any of the countless discarded plastic vessels that formerly held Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite have any messages stored within. They bob about along with abandoned flip-flops, orphans that have lost the feet they call home and their twins that they call family. Wood, ranging from the tiny stick to entire trees ... read more

after taking the long route to El Salvador, we were more than ready to spend a few days on the beach. My friend Toby was not ready for us to visit until the 13th, so we decided to head down to the beach and explore the waves that get surfers all excited. We found the area surprisingly affordable. The country is dollarized, and tends to be more expensive than surrounding countries. Nonetheless, our dorm room lodging the first night cost $6 each, and we moved to a place that had a private room and air conditioning with free water and free WIFI (I wrote about 5 blogs from here) for $10pp. Both places are recommended. Comes down to a matter of preference. I wanted to go ahead and spend the extra money on air con and ... read more

Day 800 (08.06.09) and Day 801 (09.06.09) From Roatan we were making our way all the way over from the Caribbean coast to the Pacific coast and some relaxing beach time in El Salvador. You may have noticed a fair bit of relaxing time in the past couple of blogs, sorry if that makes them a little boring to read! We had planned to travel the northern part of Central America in our usual style by taking in as many places as we could in the time that we had. And we started in just that way until we reached Flores in Guatemala. Neither of us had been feeling 100% for a while, little problems were annoying us more than usual and we weren't as excited about the whole travelling lifestyle anymore. We realised that we ... read more

San Salvador is not what I expected. Most Central American cities I have been to have great contrasts...the very rich and the very poor. But I never expected the shopping centers and hotels that are all over San Salvador. It really looked like any U.S. city. As soon as the bus pulled in I asked Jon if he wanted to head to the beach right away and he agreed. We went down to El Tunco and it was a very rustic developing part of the country. A place I'm sure did not even have electricity not long ago. We found a room with a fan and booked it for the night. Great little spot on a black sand beach, We realized quickly a fan was not enough. It was so hot and humid that I could ... read more

So we have been and left El Salvador but we loved it so much that we want to tell you all about it. We arrived on 17th May and spent our first few days at the beach. We managed to catch our first chicken bus and headed for Playa El Tunco which is THE place for catching waves in Central America and is a mecca for surfer dudes. Naturally that meant we had to pay it a visit, with the intention of having surf lessons. When we arrived we checked into Hostel Papaya which was in the estury but also in view of the beach, cool little place with lots of hammocks and some nice decked areas to relax and chat to the other people that were there. The beach was volcanic so the sand was ... read more

Thursday morning Mr. Iglesias picked us up early and we were on our way to the beach! As I've mentioned, the Holy Week is a big holiday here and pretty much everyone but the police have off this week, so the drive that should have taken about 30 minutes ended up being double that. We didn't mind the drive, though, as the trip was filled with interesting cultural experiences. First, we saw a pickup truck with 3 men in the back accompanied by 3 huge pinatas and we thought about following them to their party (because who doesn't love a good pinata), but in the end decided the beach was a more prudent plan. As we got closer to the beach there were a number of roadside restaurants and vendors selling handmade wooden furniture that looked ... read more

Tim Version: * Changed hostal to Dizzys "El Hostal", got very very comfortable. * Partied in San Salvador, saw ruins, surfed, chilled, got to know and be close to Eve. The version that follows no chronological order - as the name says, its a mush: Its funny moving from one hostel to another, especially right next door! It feels downright treacherous, but damnit I wanted a fridge heh. And man it was worth it! I packed that thing day after day with food, loving having dairy and meat to cook with again! Its funny trying t explain the hostel you´re at when its name is "El Hostal", which translates to "The Hostel" - see where the problem lies? Its a cool looking place with everything I wanted, including tranquility (harder to find in El Tunco as ... read more
