Getting up at ridiculous hours for tours or buses has pretty much been the norm for us now for the past 6-7 weeks, and we therefore felt a well-earned break was on the cards for all our ‘hard work’. In particular, this seemed to come to light one evening during dinner, when after a gentle yawn I said to Donna that I was knackered and that it was probably time to ‘hit the hay’ after dinner, to which Donna responded, ‘Mike it’s 7:30pm!’. The days of staying up till silly O’clock at home seem a long way away at the moment, as we appear to be evolving and morphing into what we once feared….morning people! Hopefully, this is just a phase though, and we will continue to try work through it. So, a break from buses ... read more

'El Salvador seemed to be lacking in any redeeming features really but you may want to check it out if there’s stuff there that floats your boat. San Salvador, the capital where we had one night on a stop over, is lawless as f***. Expect to see security guards armed to the teeth, think Arnie in Commando style, very disconcerting.' C. Warren 2011 It was all a whirlwind of decision making. Having given up school, I kicked around in San Pedro de Laguna for a while which is easy to do because it is a party town. My friend, a Belguian named Jurgen, described his time at San Pedro as being 'lazy by day, hazy by night' which sums it up perfectly. I had a tricky period where I became addicted to heroine but luckily it ... read more

I couldn't decide whether to do 3 blogs for this or not, so I think I'll go for 1 blog with 3 parts... After a few nights in Santa Ana, it was time to hit the Pacific beaches, mainly reputed for their surfing (not something I would be partaking in). Even though I hadn't exactly pre-planned the itinerary on that stretch, I ended up staying for 3 nights in 3 different places (hence the 3 parts blog): Los Cobanos, El Tunco and La Libertad. Los Cobanos: Although it had a brief mention in my guidebook, I hadn't really thought of going there until I asked the owner of my Santa Ana hostel and he said this was the place to be and also recommended a place to stay. So I left Santa Ana on Sunday morning, ... read more

I went to El Salvador but I didnt find the peace that I was so desperately looking for. I couldnt get money out at the ATM and I didnt want to go to San Salvador, just for that, equally spooked by the stories of other travellers telling me, that they couldnt get any. Not good news either. The beach was an expensive shanty town, the hostel located next to a mangrove that would also be described as a stinky mosquito infested estuary. The host family was very nice though, we practiced our english and spanish, watching coloumbian soap operas which mainly resemble soft porn. Rented a board and went sunrise surfing. It was windstill, glassy and clean as you would expect what I didnt want to see were the 50 other surfers that also got up, ... read more

Hammock Time Surfer Dudes Hang Loose in El Tunco El Tunco {Which means "The Pig"} is a small village on the Pacific Coast of El Salvador. It takes us less than an hour to get here by bus from San Salvador and as we arrive on a Sunday the village is at it’s busiest with lots of Salvadorians making the day trip. There's very little to El Tunco, about two streets and a beach - this is definitely a place for chilling out. And it's not a beach for sunbathers. For one thing it’s cloudy and raining when we arrive, and for another this is not a sandy beach. For some reason the pebbled beach reminds me of childhood visits to Rhyl. This is a beach for surfers. All the other guests staying at our hotel ... read more

I took a smooth seven hour bus journey with Tica bus (a direct first class bus), from Tegucigalpa to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. I stayed one night with Marcus, an ex-peace corp American Couchsurfer who stayed on teaching English after his placement had finished. Marcus was a good host and took me out to some of the sights around San Salvador such as Puerto Diablo, a rocky cliff overlooking San Salvador and providing magnificant views of the city and surrounding countryside. That evening, whilst Marcus was working, his girlfriend, Leticia, took me out for some drinks in one of the malls. Leticia is Salvadoran and really fun - I had a great time. Later that evening Marcus and I met a couple of his friends who were studying at the university there for ... read more

After a calm weekend spent in Juayua, Fin and I grouped together with a pair of tall Blondes - one Danish and the other Australian - and embarked at around midday for El Tunco, a tiny surfing town about three hours away. Getting on a chicken bus with your backpack is pretty difficult: often these buses are full the point that no seat is holding less than three people, and when you´re in a quiet area such is Juayua, there´s no bus conductor to hike your pack up on the roof, so it´s up to you to maneouvure it in through the hordes of passengers. When you multiply this already tricky situation by four, you can understand that the Fin, me and the two Blondes had a fairly hard time travelling soley on chicken buses this ... read more

So upon finishing our volunteer work in Estancia, Becky and I spent 2 ½ weeks travelling through the rest of El Salvador. And heres the scoop. Contents 1.Perquin: couples get away in the mountains (with the other couple volunteers) 2. El Tunco: Beach culture El Salvador, with surfing. 3. Colonial Towns and lakes: Suchitoto, Lago de Coatepeque, Ataco, Ruta de las Flores 4. Juayua. Gastronomia Food Fair 5. Barra de Santiago: 6. La Despedida 1. Perquin: couples get away in the mountains (with the other couple volunteers) Our first stop was a joint trip to Perquin with the other 2 volunteers, also a couple. A quick recap on the situation: they were really cool but we all basically shared 1room. There was a wall between us but you could hear every sound, even tossing during the ... read more
