Surfer Dudes Hang Loose in El Tunco

El Tunco {Which means "The Pig"} is a small village on the Pacific Coast of El Salvador. It takes us less than an hour to get here by bus from San Salvador and as we arrive on a Sunday the village is at it’s busiest with lots of Salvadorians making the day trip.

There's very little to El Tunco, about two streets and a beach - this is definitely a place for chilling out. And it's not a beach for sunbathers. For one thing it’s cloudy and raining when we arrive, and for another this is not a sandy beach. For some reason the pebbled beach reminds me of childhood visits to Rhyl.

This is a beach for surfers. All the other guests staying at our hotel are surfers and the few shops in the village are obviously aimed at the surfing community.

Our hotel, La Guitarra, seems to be confused about what image it is trying to project; the décor being a mix of surfing, rock music, Latin American revolutionaries and with a pirate and Captain Birdseye thrown in for good measure. The hotel has a number of small chalets and access straight onto the beach {but still no hot water!}

We’re here to relax for a couple of days. None of our group seem particularly keen on trying out the surfing and I’m happy just to divide my time between lying in a hammock, sitting watching the ocean and being totally tubular and trying to learn surfer language.

Why does this remind me of Rhyl?
