Monday The howler alarm went off at 5am again, but this time it didn't work. Up later for breakfast and some reading. Today we wanted to walk back into Uvita, and we wanted to wait until we were sure things were open. It's not a bad walk at all (1km) when you are going downhill. We walked by a few nice stucco homes, some cornfields, and a little fruit store. Stopped in to look around and visited with the owner. He had just opened recently. He came to Costa Rica for a one month vacation, and is still here a year later. Something about this country that does that to people. We got to town and bought tickets ($22) for a direct bus to San Jose next Thursday morning. Bob the Tour Guide has an adventure ... read more

Sunday The howler monkeys got crazy at 5am this morning. The male is very loud. We were told that it is normal for them to be loud at this time. No need for an alarm clock here! But it is actually good to get up early and start the day before it gets too hot. The balcony is so nice early in the morning. Bob made some coffee and we just enjoyed the view for a while. We read at the hotel that there is a lovely view atop the hill past the waterfall. We looked for wildlife along the way, saw many small butterflies and the blue morpho. We ran into a tourist at a fork in the road. He said the road to the left led up to a beautiful overlook, was about two ... read more

Saturday Today we checked out of our hostel (Pura Vida). We got our deposits back for our towels and key. This is good way to do it, fewer missing items. The hostel called the taxi for us, and it was there in less than five minutes. We got to the Quepos station quite early. I stayed with the luggage and Bob went to the bank and got us some breakfast snacks. The bus left exactly on time, 9:30am. Once out of Quepos, the roads were good, except when we drove into some small towns. Most of the area was jungle, with an occasional home or corn field. Took us about two hours to get to Uvita. The bus stop was right across the street from the bank and grocery store. We picked up groceries for a ... read more

March 5 (Envision blog): After waking up from a nice, uninterrupted nights sleep (in a BED!) back in Dominical, it feels like the festival was merely a dream. I know how Dorothy must've felt when she woke up back in Kansas, safe in her bed, after all her experiences in the zany world of Oz. We also traveled to a surreal place, met some interesting characters, and witnessed some unreal performances. Envision was definitely a challenge for me. The days were hotter than Hell and I felt so lazy and tired all the time. It was almost unbearable sitting through some of the speakers presentations under a hot red tarp. I never woke up early enough to make it to yoga before the heat set in. There was a waterfall nearby but you had to hitch ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, As the crow flies, the journey from Boquete to Pavones should be about 2 hours away. However, our metaphorical crow was severly maimed and limped it´s way all the way there. We got a bus out of Boquete after a fond farewell to our German friends who had struggled up Volcan Baru and made exceptional salads and chicken. We stopped over in David shortly before getting a bus to the border with Costa Rica. The border was ridiculously confusing mainly because of people trying to help us ending up with us going backwards and forwards between each country to get the required stamps. We left the ´balboa´currency for the much less Rocky-themed and bowel-themed ´colones´. The bus to Laurel was 15 minutes late and then we ended up waiting about 2 hours for ... read more

Hola. Uvita is a small town on the Pacific coast that boasts some fine beaches and prime wildlife habitat. We stayed in a permaculture retreat on the side of a hill a couple of kilometres from town and enjoyed the sounds of the jungle as we melted in the heat. The retreat was set in a gorgeous tract of rainforest and all around us was lush green wilderness. There were nearby waterfalls with nice swimming holes to cool us off and a background chorus of insects and birds. Interestingly, the guy who ran the retreat was from Spain and was a native speaker of Euskara (Basque), one of the oldest remaining European languages! What an awesome sounding language - totally peculiar! The Marino Ballena National Park was gorgeous, with golden-sand beaches thickly lined with palms and ... read more

Make sure y'all are scrolling all the way to the bottom of the page now to see all the photos. The new & (not yet improved) Travelblog has placed ads in between blogs & photos. Everyone needs to make a buck so you can't really blame them right? Just an FYI. :) Instead of tacking on back to back long travel days we decided to spend the day here in Uvita & regroup. Plus Flutterby is really great & I could spend days here. And, my twin bed was really comfy, it was cool at night, & I slept great. We woke up & climbed the stairs out of our treehouse & headed to the kitchen where we found delicious, strong, freshly made coffee. We also were given eggs, bread, tortillas, & told to make whatever ... read more

Got up, packed, returned the beer bottle from dinner (to the grocery store) for our $1 deposit. Yikes, Costa Rica! Also, when I gave the checker the bottle & receipt she kinda looked at me like I was crazy. Doesn't everyone return their bottles for a dollar! Maybe not the gringos, I don't know. Caught bus at 8am in Playa Coco & headed somewhere in Southern Costa Rica. As far as we can get today. That's where we'll stop. Caught 2nd bus in Liberia (where we used the restroom & ordered gallopinto to go & ate it on the bench in the bus station) to Puntarenas. Thankfully the bus driver was nice enough to drive us right up to the bus stop (aka the middle of the street in town) for our next bus where we ... read more

first message. Haven't gone this route before to find information and so a little new. We have been thinking of spending the winter of 2011 in Uvita and wonder is anyone out there has some information. There are several house we have found to rent at resonable rates but wonder if area is exciting enough for two to three months. Also it would appear that car rental for the period should be considered. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. We have spend previous winters in Mexico and would like a change. ... read more
