Showering with Pigs. Happy Valentine's Day from Costa Rica!!! So far I have had porcupines, an anteater and a one armed monkey crawling on me. I've also been attacked by a coati and had a shower with a pig. We are volunteering at the Rainsong Wildlife Refuge, run by a large texan woman reminiscent of Adam Sandler's mom in waterboy. She just orders us about and is surprisingly stressed about living in Paradise. The reserve itself is very small, with the aforementioned animals as well as a skunk, turtles, tapirs, birds, and an owl. We have been working on the grounds (Derek), and taking care of the animals (me). Derek is chopping plants and carrying heavy things while I have been cuddling with anteaters (the aptly named Anty). Anty has a long tongue which he will ... read more

If we had only known the things we know now BEFORE we went over here! The little town was great but once your there you pay dearly to get out. We bused hours up from Jaco to Puntarenas (one ugly town full of garbage) to take the ferry over to the Penninsula and take another bus down to Montezuma. It was possible to take a one hour jet boat strait from Jaco to Montezuma but it cost $35 EACH which is our days budget so we opted for the cheap LONG way around and down. We did get lucky a couple times and we met a nice American couple on the ferry who had rented a car and offered to cram us in and drive us down to Montezuma. The air conditioned drive was awesome compared ... read more

Well we are heading to Melissa's last week here and we decided to go a few days to Montezuma. We drove 4 hours and were kindda dissapointed........I guess it had to grow on you because the next day was a little better. We did have monkies at the breakfast table and had a good walk to the waterfall. The national park was closed so we decided to head towards playa Grande to watch the leatherbacks. We took a wrong turn and had a pretty shitty but beautiful road, really one to reccomend! Make sure you take a 4x4 because we had to cross rivers. Watch the pictures. Now we are getting ready to go to Malaysia, yes Martin is finally going for Course director!!!......................... Melissa's tijd zit er bijna op dus dachten we nog ff naar ... read more

I am in HEAVEN... I met my friend Steph (who I met in BA a few months back) in Montezuma. I must admit at first I was thinking to myself "why does she love this place so much..." though it only took me a couple of days to realise and now I am in love also. Montezuma is a small town about 7hrs by bus and ferry from San Jose. It is a bit of a hippy town with loads of locals and peops from all over selling there jewellery on the street, a beautiful jungle and stunning beach. The weather is crazy humid hot but though we complain about it often we really do love it! I also met Brena, a gal who Steph met whilst travelling in CR. The three of us have become ... read more

Note: This entry was not written by Mike Bebernes And so the adventure continues! First and foremost, sorry there are no pictures on this blog. Not that we are in a dangerous place (donĀ“t worry moms) but we just thought it best to not be prancing around Paquera with our digital camera. But that just means double the pictures next time. So we decided to leave Manuel Antonio to head for the Nicoya Pennisula. Once again we had quite a day travelling to get to the lazy beach town of Montezuma. First lesson we learned in Costa Rica. 1) When you take public transportation and the bus schedules says it will be 3 hours to your next destination, that really means 6 hours. Life here is so different that the U.S. Rules are more like guidelines, ... read more

Our next stop was the funky town of Montezuma - full of laid back folks enjoying the good life on the Costa Rican coast. The boys explored the tidal pools and then we had dinner at an open-air restaurant overlooking the beach. Kyle and Sam also helped support the local economy by purchasing hand-carved wood necklaces of a dolphin and crocodile respectively. We headed back to our hotel before the nightlife got too crazy. We came back the next morning to check out the waterfall just outside town. Unbeknownst to us, the trail to the waterfall is a bit of a challenge in the rainy season. Thankfully, there was Carlos. He and his grandfather operate the parking lot at the trailhead but he took one look at the boys and offered to help guide us to ... read more

Traveling to Costa Rica with my two girlfriends, Dawn and Rachael, was a life changing experience for me. This Costa Rican excursion was the first time I traveled without any adult supervision. When there aren't any parents around, you are in so much more control of your so-called destiny of your trip. Traveling with friends also comes with added responsibility. I was so much more aware of my surroundings because I had to focus to make sure I was going in the right direction. Second, we were legit backpackers staying in hostels. I never knew places to stay could be as cheap as 8$ a night! The backpacking experience was cool, too. I felt like I had the look of an experienced traveler! 1. On Thursday 9th August I left Antigua in Guatemala and made my 2 day journey down to Costa Rica. The journey was fine and over pretty quickly considering the distance. After spending a day in the capital San Jose and looking for my friends lost luggage we set off the next day to the little village of Montezuma on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We got the bus to a place called Puntareanas where we then got a ferry then back on the bus the other side for the 2 hour drive to Montezuma. Montezuma is a tiny village consisting of two roads. It is the original hippy town and there is a very laid back feel about it. We spent the next three days sunbathing, swimming in waterfalls and generally lazing around in hammocks ... read more

Well, it's probably time that we update you all so you know what you're missing! Our first night in San Jose was difficult. Nobody spoke english! Big surprise tho, right? It finally hit us that we were here alone...and we can do whatever we want! SO, we ate from the street vendors and drank the water (and cerveca) and even tried fresh squeezed limon juice (tastes like oranges!). The next morning we hopped a bus to Puntarenas (aka the butthole of costa rica...yeah...) and hitched a ferry to Paquera. We met this couple from Sweden who were travelling to Montezuma also, so we caught a cab with a one-legged driver to the city. Fastest drive ever, AND we got a minus-one-leg discount!! He was great, he slammed on the breaks s we could see all ... read more

Would it be redundant if I were to say that my friends and I had ANOTHER fantastic weekend? Well, my apologies, but yes- we had another fantastic weekend. This time (just us five girls) made the adventurous journey to Montezuma, a bohemian town on the southern coast of the Nicoya Peninsula (which is the North Western peninsula of Costa Rica). It was our first trip to the western side of the country and, sadly, our last trip together in CR. But we geared up, stocked up on snacks(I stocked up on drammamine) for the looong journey everyone kept warning us about, and we were off once again. The trip to Montezuma was made up of a 2 1/2 hour bus ride from San Jose to Puntarenas, where we purchased tickets for the 1 1/2 hour ... read more
