hi everyone. my mom is home safe and sound now. 2 days ago we went ziplining over the cloud forest and it was one of the best days of my life! my mom felt the same way. i can't even explain how it felt to be sailing through the air attached to a wire. i felt like superwoman. and it was so ridiculously beautiful! there was also a tarzan rope where i jumped off of a platform and went flying so far into the jungle. i wanted to do it over and over and over. we also did another hike through the rainforest and walked over the hanging bridges and went to a hummingbird garden and a frog pond. i was in heaven looking at all of the creatures. now i am in a town ... read more

Yesterday, we had a party at the school for the celebration of the anexción de Guanacaste. It´s a national holiday here, no one works, no one goes to school except us haha, there was lots of gallo pinto and rice and beans con juevos. I had to go to the butchers shop at 8 am to buy some churizo especial, aka, special sausage, no lie. Anywho, not a whole lot happened yesterday, classes same old same, but marcos, jeff and I did go to Pollo AP after class to score some 2 for 1 chalupas. Sweetness. I´ve recently become slightly perturbed at our traveling group. This one girl gets pissed at me cus, i don´t correctly pronounce all the words correctly. You see, Jeff and I are the only 2 out of us all that are ... read more

Well the folks at Intercultura Language School could NEVER give me an exam that equaled to the true test I had this week in Samara. For those of you wondering why I haven't blogged or emailed much in over a week. . .here's my story: Last Saturday night I began to feel a sore throat that I knew was a tell-tale sign of worse things to come. I had prepared myself well for all kinds of intestinal issues that I'd heard were so common in Latin America. Of course no where in my ziplock of medicines could I find anything for any ailments snot-related. I decided it best that I befriend the little man at the farmacia. Boy was that an experience! Now I can proudly say I'm coming along quite nicely with the language acquisition ... read more

Today, after surfing, I had nothing but time on my hands. I decided to jump in one of the school's hammocks and read my book. . .pura vida, no? As I was reading to the sound of waves and palm branches, I caught a glimpse of our friendly neighbors, los monos. It was a cute little family. The dad, ever the macho, is the family's protector and stayed on a main branch while his wife and babies, some of which were on her back, took time to go out onto further branches to eat fruit. I started snapping photos right and left. Then I made the mistake of getting right under one of those monkeys. She either really didn't like me or felt very comfortable with me right there because that was the exact moment she ... read more

People have to understand that I have some serious moist problems. This entire weekend I was moist! And by “moist problems” I mean, I have profound objections to feeling moist, especially for long periods of time. Good thing I´m probably in the moistest country in the world at this time! This weekend was crazy. Guanacaste has extremely bumpy terrain. We were bouncing in our tour bus all the way to the beach. And can you imagine how that would be like if you had to go to the bathroom? I had just that problem. Despite my discomfort, I would say this was one of my favorite weekends. Sunset at the beach, geysers, mudbaths, pushing the bus up and down muddy hills…yep, that was this weekend. It started raining…hard…when we were in the rainforest of the Volcán ... read more

Okay, so before I start in on today's surfing adventure, let me start by addressing all the "Are you sure you're studying down there?" comments I've been getting. YES, I'm studying like a maniac! Let me take a moment to expand this point. Last Monday I sat down with the director and dove right into a conversation with him in Spanish for approximately 30 seconds, saying a few of the only sentences I know about myself, thanks to my wonderful PSage teachers. Well, for some reason, he decides to put me in Spanish Level 3, an intermediate level class. The class is only in Spanish. . .no English allowed. We're conjugating verbs right and left in the present and past, regular and irregular. I spend 4 hours in classes each day. This week our class consisted ... read more

I've learned something important about Costa Rica. . . the destinations are beautiful and extraordinary to behold, but getting there, getting anywhere, is inevitably miserable. Yesterday, some friends and I (two Canadians and a Swiss) decided to go see the giant leatherback turtles that nest in Ostional National Park. It's supposed to be a short little day trip, well actually a night trip, because the best time to see them is the week of the full moon at night. My Tico family said it took about an hour or an 1:15min to get there. So off I went at 8pm, knowing it would probably be a fairly late night. What the heck, I'm only in Costa Rica once, no? For one night I thought I could give up my first-one-to-hit-the-sack status. It was raining slightly when ... read more

Hola mis amigos! I am so happy to have heard from many of my friends from Texas! Now it's time for me to update you all on my first few days in Costa Rica. I arrived on Saturday in Liberia, which has an nice little primative open-air airport. The landing strip was short, which called for a very abrupt stop. And I've never stood in line for customs in 95 degree heat! I headed to Tamarindo for the night were I immersed myself in solitude. My first friends were two iguanas who greeted me on the beach. I did a little exploring in the town of Playa Langosta, and then returned to my B & B. I was the only guest at Casa Doble and since it rained that evening, I just bought myself a few ... read more

Hello, Kia Ora, hola, yo hope everyone is safe and well, its been a little while since my last blog mostly due to a case of cant be bothered. Still loving Costa Rica after almost 8 weeks and am not looking forward to leaving in 11 days. I skipped the Guatamala trip to spend those two weeks here. Since Nicaragua ive mostly been chilling out, hanging with buddies, beaching it up and working with Las Tinajas making the new indoor table sets. Kinda feel like ive settled into life here again. Russ is down from Canada with his lovely wahine Kim, was a great surprise catch up in Tamarindo last weekend with a good night of dancing and trying some local spirits. Kim and Kat had a shopping session with nothing but womans intuition to guide ... read more

A last blog from rainy Samara......... After a fabulous trip around the country (and Panama) we ended the tour with a great day rafting on the river Pacuare. Unfortunately no pictures of that day because we obviously got soaked several times. It was one of the most fun experiences here in Costa Rica, maybe even better than SkyTrek (it's a close call). We left from Puerto Viejo early in the morning with our backpacks and slept most of the way to the adventure centre near Siquirres. We drove to the river and got our safety talk etc etc from our very cool guide Roberto. Somehow I ended up being the guinea pig, I had to jump into the river to demonstrate how someone needs to be rescued should they fall in. Quite refreshing actually, it was ... read more
