Another day, another island! Quite a lot of islands actually as Tortola belongs to the British Virgin islands! Fifty or so islands, most with weird names such as Salt, Norman, Jost Van Dyke, Guana, Fallen Jerusalem, Dead Chest, Virgin Gorda......I could go on!! Local belief is that when Christopher Columbus discovered the islands in 1493, he named them after the 11,000 virgins of the 4thCentury martyr, St Ursula! This was our first experience of a Tender to reach land, so we had to wait until all the P & O trip passengers had disembarked before we could get ashore. Reached Tortola by about 10.00am and boarded an open sided trolley for a tour of the island, followed by the beach! We ended up with the ‘Friendliest Driver’ whose vehicle was pretty clapped out and as there ... read more

Saturday 20th December, 2014. Tortola, BVI, Leeward Islands, West Indies The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a group of about 50 Islands only 4 of which are of any size. Their total land area is less than half that of the Isle of Wight. All but about 12 are uninhabited. The BVIs are generally volcanic and hilly except for Anegada (the 2nd largest) which is coral and flat. The first human inhabitants were the Siboney Indians who wandered nomadically from island to island picking up whatever they could to eat in the way of indigenous plants and fish. CC named them "the Virgins" because he thought them so beautiful and numerous that he compared them to St ursula and her 11,000 virgins martyred in Cologne during the early days of Christianity. St Ursula's Day coinciding with ... read more

We are back to the BVI for another fun day! And yes, this time it's a diving day! I did my homework properly this time. I knew the diving in Virgin Gorda was ok, but there was a nice lobster BBQ organized by Club Med 2. JVD, Jost Van Dyke is way smaller. This is a yachties paradise...and yes, diving seems to be way more fun! The island has only 180 inhabitants....so yes, it is a cute and small place. I'm diving today with Jost Van Dyke diving. First fun point, these guys are actually living on Tortola and do the 45 minutes crossing with the diving boat every morning. Well, today it's actually not only me, I have the chance to get Thierry with me. Thierry hasn't dived for 10 years, he has 50 dives ... read more

This is the second leg of a truly fun week. There are adventures to get each morning when we land somewhere else, but also fun time on the boat itself. The Club Med 2 has an open bar. Yes, that means free flow of pretty good things...all day long. So being on a French boat, you have Ricard for aperitif at lunch time if you are on the boat at lunch time...and pina colada by the pool before sunset, and obviously wine during meals. We are in the North Hemisphere end of November, so sunsets are early at around 5.30pm each day...with some pretty cool views from the swimming pool bar on the back deck. By 6pm, it's champagne time...all night long. Well, first it's shower time and getting change for the evening obviously...this is still ... read more

14thMay: Trellis Bay – Tortola 6nm Once again there were no mooring balls available when we arrived and nowhere to anchor safely. There was a bit of chop coming in so wanted to be inside the bay. We circled 3 times through, no one was leaving. Then decided to do one final sweep through the bay before heading across to Marina Cay opposite to anchor. Just as we were coming past Sea Quest Marin was yelling out and indicating a free ball right next to them. A yacht had just left. No one else picked it up as it didn't have a lead line and was very difficult to get the ball up on deck.....but I managed!! Full moon party was much more 'tame' than we expected. It was really good fun. Very family orientated. Big ... read more

13thMay Baths, Virgin Gorda 12nm Sailed up to the Baths this morning (well motored actually). Had to wait for a mooring to become available as it was lunch time and all the mooring balls were taken. After probably close to an hour one became available so we jumped on and then went to explore the baths. You can't take your dinghy ashore, so you tie it off on a rope and then have to swim ashore. We snorkelled ashore and saw a very big baracuda in close on our way in. The Baths are stunning, massive granite rocks, pristine waters and sunshine making it all so blue and white. We went for a walk nearly over to the next bay on a small dirt track with heaps of massive cacti all around. Phil thinks Eliza might ... read more

Arrived at Norman Island after a short motor from Cane Gardens Bay on the other side of Tortola. We took up a mooring ball in 'The Bight' close to the shore on the port side of the bay. I snorkled ashore soon after and had a snorkel in the shallows below the cliffs. Then, after lunch we went in the zodi around to Privateer Bay where we snorkeled against the cliffs and into 3 caves. One was quite deep into the cliffs and Phil went all the way to the back, but it was too dark for me. For sundowners we went ashore to the newly built resort for a quick drink, but it was too posh. so we went across to the other side of the bay where the William Thornton or Willy T is ... read more

Stunning small sandy spit stayed overnight, but not many of the other charter boats did. Played cricket on the beach for an hour with the boys. Saturday, December 28, 2013 (At Sea) Today is our last day at sea. Like Friday, we are free to do what we want at our own pace. This is what we like about our sea days. After eating breakfast in the Concerta Dining Room, fresh made to order breakfast is awesome, the kids wanted to participate in the last session of the Zumba. Zumba seems to be a popular activity, particularly the last day on the ship. Todd and Cindy went with the kids to watch them. What a fun activity to participate and watch. During the one hour session, three different instructors lead the large group. Each of the instructors had different personalities and the music tempo was different. They first started slow then work their way up to a faster tempo. I attached a ... read more
