hi everyone who is interested to enough to hear about our wild adventures. Well we have spent the past few days in Belize. We took a rocky boat ride from Livingston, Guatemala across the open ocean to Puerto Gorda in Southern Belize. It was a really rocky boat ride in a very small boat without any life preservers... but no worries we made it across safely. From Puerto Gorda, which was a really boring city and we were there for only a short time we took a school bus, which was painted with red and green stripes, to Placencia, Belize. It is like an island, although they say you can drive to it, but that is a lie... you have to take a ferry from Independence (where the bus drops you off) to Placencia. The town ... read more

My most recent travels have brougt me to cross the border, learn a little spanish, and eat lots of avocados. Last weekend myself and Josh left the country early Friday morning for the tiny island of Flores, located about 2 hours off the border. We found a lovely place to stay over looking the lake and spent our days going to caves, swimming in the lake, and going to an animal reserve. Of course we consumed lots of yummy nachos and fresh, fresh produce. Avocados aren't in growing season in Belize(so we snuck some across the border) and the produce is alot tastier than here also(we ate alot of melt-in-your-mouth mangoes). This past Wednesday my Maya class took a trip to Caracol, in mountain pine ridge. The weather was suprisingly cool and our teacher is the ... read more

Travis came and we did some fun things like go to Tikal ruins and the blue hole(swimming hole) . for easter, i stayed around san ignacio and there was a fair with a scary, very fast paced ferris wheel which I risked my life on. Also I have some pictures from La Ruta Maya. This past weekend we went to Punta Gorda for my group project. Walked around one of the local villages and surveyed people; found their homes and lifestyles very interesting, different than anything I have seen in Belize thus far. Hiked a little into the jungle in the village, Blue Creek, and went swimming at the mouth of a maya cave. Very refreshing considering it was 97 degrees out. It is getting extremely hot down here, thank the lord I have air conditioning!Love! ... read more

Right, so we have better computers, so HOPEFULLY some pictures will accompany this little entry, but dont blame me if i have spoken too soon. At the moment, we're in a river valley town called San Ignacio, up in the hills, and had hoped the weather would be less stifling, but oh no, its probably worse becuase being in a bowl, the breeze isnt as stiff as you'd like, so i have had about 4 showers today, and will be having at least 2 more by sleep time! We left Placencia on another little plane, much fun, was a clearer day so could see much more below and in the distance, pretty tropical. We had to go to a place called Dangriga to cath a bus, and just missed one, so had to wait for an ... read more

22 February - 23 February The border crossing here was much more civilized and well organised, what you would expect a border crossing to be, and through within half an hour!! San Ignacio was 30minutes from the border and we got there by taxi, straight away the difference between Guatemala and Belize was apparent, mainly due to the signs and language being in English. We arrived at the hotel, which was the first hotel that we stayed at that was outside the town centre (only by a fifteen minute walk). We had our own huts within a garden and a little patio attached to each hut, very Carribean! San Ignacio is a town centred around rivers and rain forest/jungle. We arrived in gorgeous sunshine but instead going down to the river for a swim we took a ... read more

Back to the Mainland A great idea John and Joan had was to take a trip inland and visit Tikal, in Guatemala. Along the way we could make a stop-over in the city of San Ignacio, located just a few miles from the border with Guatemala. There are lots of eco tourism options in San Ignacio and it’s at the halfway point to Tikal (one of the largest Mayan ruins discovered). Sounded great to us and since there were 4 of us, it made more sense to rent a car; making our lives a lot easier. Our road trip began by taking the water taxi in to Belize City where the car rental agency picked us up at the terminal. We rented from Crystal Auto Rental and everyone there was great. Once at the main office, ... read more

It has been a very busy last couple of weeks, and even busier to come. Since last writing, mom and dad came and we journeyed to Placencia. Mom has pictures of all of that, so one would need to ask her to see them. The following weekend, my ecotourism class took a trip to Gales point to stay at a Manatee watch place. Basically they track the manatees and take care of them. We went caving and manatee watching and swam in the ocean. Two girls got peed on by catepillars and got the cinch. Their skin was all bubbly and now it is peeling. Pretty gross. After Gales Point, my whole UVM group with all the professors went to South Water Caye, which could possily be the best beach I have ever been to. It ... read more

Hi all! I ve been very busy seeing the sights of belize. Two weekends ago we went to a field station in Orange Walk(northern Belize) called La Milpa. It was very beautiful, situated in the middle of a jungle. We took many mini hikes around the jungle learning of the different flora and fauna, saw an unexcavated Maya ruin, and did some night spotting. My favorite part was probably the howler monkeys, they really sound like dogs howling. Unfortunately I got chiggers--tiny little mites that attach to your skin or lay eggs or something--and I am very itchy, which isn't suppose to stop for weeks! Other than that we had a five day weekend as a result of election day which only comes around every five years. A new party, the UDP, came into power which ... read more
