Andrew and I spent yesterday afternoon and evening relaxing. We climbed up the bird watching tower and spotted many birds, although the only one we recognized was the bird of paradise. No toucans! About twenty feet or so away from the tower, the people who work at the resort hang a basket of fruit in a high tree that they change out every few days or so. When we were up in the tower, the basket was occupied by a single, large iguana. The reptile must have hit the jackpot finding that pile of fruit! We figured he climbed the tree to get into it, but we couldn't figure out how he'd get out, so after sitting there for a bit, we let Kim (one of the owners at the resort) know. She told us ... read more

Yesterday we went to DuPlooys, which is a botanical garden and resort. We got a tour of the grounds and learned plenty about plants. I spent much time just relaxing in a hammock looking over the river. Today most of us started classes. I only had my Garifuna Culture class, and the teacher seems great. The class is probably evenly split between belizeans and international students. I having a busy schedule tomorrow, but am going to switch my schedule so that I take indigenous perspectives on monday and wednesday-- giving me a longer break on tuesday thusday, and still no class on friday. skype is blocked in belize so it rarely works...if i get a chance to call, i will! lots of love and kisses... read more

We found a shuttle service going from Flores to Belize but it was US$20 to Belize City and we only wanted San Ignacio. They wouldn't give us a reduced fare but we did arrange to have them take us from San Ignacio to Belize City a couple of days later as part of the same fare. On the mini bus was Paul, the Australian, who we had met at Tikal. He was going all the way through to Mexico. Pieter sat next to a Dutch guy and talked all the way. It took 3 hours to reach the border where a guy got on the bus and told people about the border requirements for money and visas. There were 4 people on the bus who did not realise they needed a visa (US$50) for Belize. And ... read more

ello ello ello Yesterday we left the turquoise seas and sand streets of Caye Caulker to head to inland Belize - we arrived yesterday evening in San Ignacio in the Cayo district, which with its sister town Santa Elena is the second most populated area in Belize. And its about the size of Oundle! (for those of you who don't know - my hometown, population about 5,000). Well - I exaggerate slightly, but it is not very big. There's two rivers running through and lots of activites based around them - we're off kayaking through the forest tomorrow so pretty excited about that. We came via a very brief visit to Belize City - which doesn't get very good press. It seemed ok but very hectic and a bit run down so we think moving straight ... read more

Beware Scrumpy!

Today we went tubing and it was awesome. Three hours floating along a river, through pitch black caves and fast rapids. I'm exhausted and have a huge bruise on my bum from when the tour leader said 'raise your bum' so I pushed it down.... read more

We left Caye Caulker today for San Ignacio. Our hotel is in the middle of nowhere but thankfully it has a pool. In this humidity, it's a necessity. We visited Belize Zoo which is more like an animal sanctuary for animals who can't go back into the wild. The national animal of Belize is the 'Baird Tapir' (or 'Mountain Cow' as the Belizians call them), and one of the strangest things I've ever seen. They're endangered now but at one stage people used to keep them as pets.... read more

Time to say goodbye (or rather: see you - I'm sure I'll be back!) to Guatemala - on we went over the border to Belize. No chaotic border-chrossings this time, just a van-ride, a couple of stamps and an exit-fee and we found ourselves in Belize, a very nice and small english-speaking country with a decidedly Caribbean, laid-back feel about it. Our first stop was in San Ignacio, a small, not too spectacular town just over the Guatemalian border. We stayed in a couple of wooden shacks just outside of town, in the middle of nature. That meant lots of hummingbirds (they are SO great!), geckos and iguanas - and lots of mosquitos of course, but by now we're used to those. ;) Since our bus-journey wasn't too long that day we had almost all day ... read more

We found a reasonable hotel in San Inagnacio- only costs less than 8 quid for both of us so I suppose we can't expect the earth. The mattress was quite possibly the most uncomfortable one I have ever had the misfortune to sleep on, indeed Trev suffered a few wounds from a rogue spring poking through! We went on a river tour today through the Belizean jungle. We got taken in the back of a truck a few miles out of town which was a bumpy, windy ride to say the least. We arrived deep in the jungle at a wooden lodge where our tour guide lived. Up the hill were some Mayan ruins which had not yet been cleared, so we tramper through jungle to get there. Every foot step I cringed, wondering what ... read more
