I'm staying in another jungle lodge, this time in Belize. This lodge has composting toilets, tarantulas and army ants. Oh fun! If slightly scary! Yesterday we arrived at lunchtime, then promptly went tubing. This is where you go down a river on a huge inner tube, over rapids and everything. It was slightly hair-raising, particularly the time where I came off after a rapid, then found myself in a real life whirl pool! Luckily I lived to tell the tale... Today we went for a hike across jungle territory to some waterfalls. It was a round trip of 12 miles. It was actually quite easy going, but we didn't take enough water and by the end walking in the sun was very hard work! We had to stomp our feet to scare of any snakes. I ... read more

Belize city turned out to be a bit of a hell hole, and 1 night there was more than enough. It's dirty, smelly, falling apart and there is someone waiting to hustle you on every corner. The following morning we packed up and set off early for San Ignacio via Belize Zoo. Upon entering the zoo Karen was 'stoked' to discover Steve Irwin and Dolly Parton were previous visitors. We got pretty snap happy and were tempted to pretend we had taken the photos on a jungle trek as the animals were easy to view in their natural surroundings. We collected our bags from the nice lady in the gift shop and continued on our way to San Ignacio. The town turned out to be a nice surprise and we have stayed longer than expected. The ... read more

Hello - Well it has been about 6 months since our last trip. We spent about 6 months at home recharging the batteries and pulling together a little money. We are only doing a short three week trip starting in mexico and then heading into belize, to guatamla, back to belize then back to mexico. We spent 2 glorious days running the white sands of tulum. We had an incredible beach front cabana that allowed us unending access to the beach which we took full advantage of. We had a couple of nights with a little too much of the drink and then finding ourselves rolling in the night time waves. After tulum we headed into belize. That has proved to be an adventure as the biggest bus company (novelos) closed down yesterday. That has meant ... read more

Writing this, ahead of me I can see a local tourist attraction for Belizians - one of only 2 sets of traffic lights in all the country, fascinating I can tell you! Which is next to a wobbly, old suspension bridge that you risk your life on every time you cross. I'm in a busy little place called San Ignacio, which translates from Spanish as 'The Island', highlighting its remote nature in the Macal River Valley. Been relaxing here for a few days, learning Spanish, getting lost in Jungles and drinking lime juice that's nearly as good as Singapore's. I survived the pirate-island of Caulker one more day where no amount of doggy paddle stopped a tidal current washing me out to sea, before snorkling back inland. I became a pupil for an evening by hiring ... read more

August 25, 2005 We arrive in the Cayo District via the chicken bus. It was a very interesting & long 2 hour drive. The bus was overpacked and everyone smelled like dirty diapers. We buy a couple of tamales from a street vendor at one stop. I loved mine but Dan´s wasn´t entirely feather free. YIKES! Hey, at least it wasn´t some sort of domestic animal fur. We almost miss our stop as there are no signs for Georgeville and our spanish speaking skills are minimal. I see our host at the side of the road and he waves us down as we are the only 2 white people on the bus. We yell for the driver to stop and he finally does. We are getting alot of looks from the locals. I hear several people ... read more

We were up early this morning for the trip to Tikal. Met at Max's place around 7:15 am - there was coffee and apple sweet cakes waiting. So fantastic. Seven of us (4 from LA, 3 from London) set out for Guatemala. Uneventful border crossing. Eventually go to the ruins where we met our guide, Mario. The ruins were amazing. We saw spider monkeys and all sort of insects. Climbed the pyramid and Temple IV - both impressive. Then lunch. Then a canopy tour - 8 different zip lines above the trees. So cool. Then a stop for souvenirs and back across the border. Now a quick shower and rest before we head back out in search of food. ... read more
