Hello again! I must go ahead and warn everyone that this entry could be very slack. I believe I have been affected by the local laided back atmosphere, way too much sun, and an abundance of Cuban cigars. Let me just put it this way; my brain and body are fried. On the mini-bus ride from Flores to Belize City and the cigar boat over to Caye Caulker, Dad and I met a group of 5 Swedish girls travelling the coast. We spent the next three days in Caye Caulker snorkeling, scuba diving, and having nightly dinners and entertainment with the group; but I will discuss that in more depth later. Just off the coast of Belize, is the world's second-largest barrier reef after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The waters are very shallow west of the ... read more

... read more

We left the Trek Stop, San Ignacio at 7am, and caught a public bus which took us through the Belize capital Belmopan, and on to Belize City. From the Marina in Belize City, it was a speed boat trip to the Island of Caye Caulker. We arrived at around 2pm, to the Indigo waters and palms trees. Paradise!!! Belize has the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, so here is a snorkerlers paradise too. After checking in to the hotel, I walked up the main road, had lunch, and then hired a Kayak, and went out to sea. It was beautiful, very warm, and the sea was fantastic. There are many tropical fish around the reefs. After an hour or so I came back, and went for another swim, checking out the fish and trying ... read more

We have decided to stay on here for another day....it's relaxing and friendly place to be! And, as you can tell by now, a hard place to leave... Today we took a boat trip to another part of the reef and then on to Ambergis Caye..this island is really built up now..full of cars and people (50 thousand in the main town) and shops and hotels...It's much nicer here! Snorkeling today was good..we saw a giant "ball" of fish all swimming together.. a moray eel, a giant lobster, and spiny black sea urchins..along with the usual colorful fish and coral. We've been watching some of the local TV programing, and we're really impressed with the initiatives to bring tourism and protect the environment... It rained really hard off and on again yesterday..and we got caught in ... read more

We had a busy day on too little sleep..(our neighbors were partying until the wee hours last night). I visited the school this morning. It is the only school on the island and is a Catholic school. It goes to 8th grade and the kids who want to continue have to travel by boat to either Belize City or Ambergis Caye for middle and high school. The principal told me that there is a push to build a high school since more and more parents want their children to finish high school. Up til now, most stopped at 8th grade. I spent time in the "Infant" classrooms (kindergarten) while they were working on reading. They really loved getting some of the crayons my students bought for them! Thanks, kids!!! We are in the midst of a cold front, believe it or not....Everyone who lives here is freezing, and we had to ask for blankets last night! It was warm enough to go kayaking this am, but tonight is cool and rainy. We moved to a less expensive hotel today, away from the beach... It is near a school, so I'm attaching photos for the kids! The next day: It rained hard all night....! Today had a few sunbreaks but was windy..so still no snorkeling or swimming... But it is warmer now... We went jogging this am, since it was cool enough, and explored more of the island on bike (they come with the hotel...)this afternoon. We are settling into life here and really relaxing.....naps in the afternoon! We have booked two more nights here and ... read more

After spending part of a night freezing in the Miami airport, we arrived in Belize City yesterday afternoon. Today we took the boat over to Caye Caulker, where we'll stay for about a week. The population in Belize is very diverse (for my students: you already know this since we read about it!) There is a large African/Caribbean population, Chinese, British, and Mennonites...everyone speaks English, but the local dialect is hard to understand. It is beautiful here...today was windy, but mostly sunny. There is a full moon tonight over the water....palm trees and mangroves everywhere. (Students: you can look up mangrove trees to see how they grow...) ... read more

Finally made it to vacation! I got off the boat yesterday around noon and headed out to Caye Caulker. Which is a little island about a 45 minute boat ride from the mainland of Belize. I am staying at a hostel here and have met a couple of real cool people including a couple from Holland, Tony and Katie from Minnesota, and a group of girls from Australia. I will be traveling to the Cayo district in a few days to visit some friends who just opened up a resort there. Gotta go, more to come... read more

“I can’t Belize the bus has broken down!” And so began our journey into beautiful Belize. With a name like Belize its hard not to try and insert it into every possible sentence. It has such a faraway, exotic sound to it, it really is hard to Belize you are in Belize when you finally arrive in what was once known as British Honduras (but got a kickarse name instead - for more information on the problems with Honduras see my earlier blogs). In the usual fashion of our trip the rains had followed our journey and Belize was in flood. We originally were going to stop off at a border town and do some remarkably overpriced (but equally awe-inspiring) caving, but the rains had come and filled the caves and instead we spent our first ... read more

Guess who's back on the caribbean coast again, dear reader, with the rasta cats feeling bless-ed man? Yes that's right, it's your intrepid travel journalist happy to post this entry from Belize. Within a minute of arriving at the bus terminal in Belize City I walked around the corner and saw two local women; one of whom approached with outstretched arms, missing teeth but a winning smile and said to me ¨Hey baby, come to mama!¨ Well, that sure was an interesting opening gambit. So anyways, I go a little further down the street towards the marine terminal, and give some skin when offered by a rasta cat who was chilling with his brothers. The cat glances at my face and says ¨Hey man, why you look like that?¨ Apparently I've been away from the caribbean ... read more
