Our final port of call and southern-most stop was in Bridgetown, Barbados. An independent Caribbean island nation, Barbados gained it's independence from Britain but still retains much of it's British charm. This island is best known for it's white sandy beaches, rums, and for being a playground for the wealthy especially along it's western coast. Our excursion that we chose for the day was a coastal cruise in a five-star catamaran with the opportunity to swim and snorkel with sea turtles. Since our excursion didn't begin until 9:30, we took full advantage of the chance to sleep in this morning. Once we exited the ship and met with our group, we all packed into a bus for the short 5 minute ride to our catamaran. When we arrived at our catamaran, everybody took off their ... read more

Today we're in Barbados and Ashley invited me to join her and some other Entertainment staff on an adventure to Blue Monkey Beach. One of the popular tours to do in Barbados is to go snorkeling with sea turtles. I love turtles. So when I'd read about that tour, I was excited to go on it. But then thanks to other crew, I learned a tour isn't necessary. We hopped in a taxi and went off to the beach. Pretty. White sand, blue water. But quite busy. Apparently it isn't always so, but we were in port with about 6 other ships, so possibly that's why. So we got a spot on the beach and rented some snorkel gear. Out in the water, about 100 feet out were a bunch of catamarans and glass bottom boats ... read more

We are booked to fly at 18:55 on BA2152 - so today we got up packed a little more and then went to Folestone where the Marine Reserve is as we wanted to use the other underwater camera. Folkestone is quite nice and used by quite a few locals - it is also roped off so the nutters on the jetskis cant get to you, though they still circle the edges trying to entice tourists on board. We swam out with some bread and were soon surrounded by fish of many colours! The kids took the pictures and we will process them when we get home. As it's a Wednesday the Harbour Master was going by and we remembered the good time we had last week. We then said goodbye to the beach as this willbe ... read more

We had booked Horse Riding today - so we were all up early to be there for 8.30. Nice place, like riding stables worldwide seems to have a certain element of rundown mode built in. We arrived early about 8.15 and were there before the owner turned up - just a couple of stable hands getting the horses ready. We weren't the only ones on the ride - there were 3 other people as well. They would go down through the forest and past the windmill and then ride along Morgan Lewis beach (the one we'd been to earlier in the holiday). We took the car and followed them down to the sea. They seemed to take forever to get through the woods - but they took it very easily which was good. We took ... read more

We got up today and it was overcast - still hot but raining. We needed some other things from the shops so we went back to Cave Shepherd in Holetown and bought some bits and pieces. We then headed upto Oyster Bay and it was absolutely lashing it down. Some people wouldn't even get out of the car! We went back to the Villa and decided to go and see the Sunbury plantation house (http://www.barbadosgreathouse.com/) this was very interesting particularly as you could go around by yourself and we were the only people there! Interestingly they left stuff out - if it was the UK it would all get nicked before you could turn round! They hold all sorts of functions at the house including marriages. In the Garden we saw our first really wild Green ... read more

On Saturday the 18th we tried to swim with the turtles at Paynes bay - but they weren't there or we couldn't find them. The water was also very cloudy with the after affects of Hurricane Dean and you couldn't really snorkel - we also went to Oyster Bay and managed to lose Eleanors snorkel and mask - so we ended up going home and lazing around the pool.. then out for a quick dinner at the Lucky Horseshoe. After the Gospel choir last week at the Crane we did something a little different this Sunday we went to have Brunch at Bubbas sports bar. It was very hot by the time we arrived @ 9.40 and as we went in through the door we noticed that Man. Utd were playing Man. City and it was ... read more

It was grey and overcast when we got up today - but it was still warm and Matthew was in the pool even though it was lashing it down with rain. As it was raining we went shopping to Cave Shepherd in Holetown which was surprisingly good and then went up the West Coast to see if we could find the bay where the harbour master had stopped. On the way up we missed it, so we went to North Point and got some good pictures of the waves crashing on the coast and then onto River Bay. We then came back via the west coast and found the location at Oyster Bay. On the way back we stopped for a picnic at the Chefette - bought a couple of items from them and then ... read more

Went to have a look at St. James church in Holetown when the maid arrived and then did some shopping at Cave Shepherd. Afterwards we came back to the villa and drove over to the East Coast - it was quite rough as they are predicting the tail end of Hurricane Dean will pass quite close to us. Lovely scenery but we decided to go back to the Crane. It was raining when we arrived at the Crane and they had boarded up the restaurants - apart from a couple of body boarders we were the only people on the beach. The sea was quite rough and the body boarding very good. We didnt let the kids go out very far as the waves were powerful and you could get a long way up the ... read more

We had booked on the Harbour Master lunch cruise today from 11.00 to 15:00. This takes you up the West Coast of Barbados and then stops at a beach where you can snorkel and go down the 70 feet slide! Well certain members of the family can - I'll take the pictures! Matthew will et in the drinks (in his Man Utd shirt) and Eleanor is in the mood for dancing! We had lunch on the way up the coast and it was surprisingly good. After lunch the ship docked on a beach just north of Holetown and you could get out and go snorkelling or walk along the beach. We went snorkelling and when out far enough found loads of Nemo type fish. Before the boat left they lowered the 70ft slide and the kids ... read more

We went to Rockley beach as we were intending on body boarding - but the sea was flat so we went back to Carlisle bay and swam out to the wrecks. In fact you can walk more than half way then we took the body boards the rest of the way as floatation devices. Its easy to spot where to go as the 4 buoys are surrounded by small boats with divers and snorkellers. We got to one buoy and the wreck was a little disappointing, small boat, some fish but not many... then we turned round and were surrounded by not hundreds bu thousands of fish! We were in about 20 to 30 foot of water but you could see all the way down to the bottom. The other buoy we visited had a ... read more
