Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach November 12th 1989

The Whitsunday Islands are a wonderful place to visit, but they are sadly well out of the price range of a humble back-packer. In fact, various rock stars own many of them. Consequently we were exiled to the mainland at a place called Airlie Beach. The boat tour round the islands was not aimed at back-packers and most of the people on the boat were wearing socks with their shorts and sandals, a complete no-no for anyone under the age of 50. I joined up with three Germans from the hostel at Airlie Beach. Now I have not been too complementary of the Germans up to now, with good reason I might add, but these three were classic evidence of the evils of generalising. They were probably the nicest people I met the whole time I ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Magnetic Island November 9th 1989

Magnetic Island is close enough to Townsville that part of it has effectively become an outer suburb. That hasn't spoilt it too much however and I enjoyed a walk around the bays on the north of the island and a World War II fort with excellent views over the island. I also felt that it was about time I slowed down and relaxed for a while, so I spent much of the time slobbing by the pool and having a few beers. There was a big group of army guys at the hostel who were on a scuba-diving course - can't be bad - and, to cut a long story short, a few beers turned into a heavy drinking session (again). Some how I think that I should be doing something else in Queensland, but never ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Townsville November 8th 1989

There was no problem finding a backpackers' hostel in Townsville as the best one was right above the transit centre. For $9 (£4.50) you got a bed in a plush room with air conditioning, an evening meal, a beer, a bus service into town and a short tour. Like Cairns, Townsville was a nice little town and well worth a few hours just wandering round, relaxing and taking it in, but the main reason for going there is the nearby Magnetic Island. You can actually swim in the sea at Townsville as a net prevents the dreaded jellyfish from getting too near to the beach.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cape Tribulation November 5th 1989

There are no excuses for sitting around in Cairns and the next tour was to Cape Tribulation. There are two places that you can stay; Crocodilos or the Jungle Lodge. Ever indecisive, I opted for a night in each. Crocodilos was very, well, nice. If you wanted a pretty place to stay, then you can look no further. If you wanted a bit of excitement then you would be VERY disappointed. Everyone was either sitting around reading books or going on nature trails (and I had had enough of nature trails), and to top it all, it rained. In the evening we played Trivial Pursuit which was a complete nightmare as it was the Australian version and none of us knew any of the answers. Unable to contain my excitement I took an early night which ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Kuranda November 2nd 1989

What is it about waterfalls? You wouldn't give them a second thought back in England, but the instant you get abroad you are prepared to travel miles to go and see them. There was a lot to see on the two day tour of the rain-forests of the Atherton Tableland west of Cairns, but it did include an awful lot of waterfalls, although in the heat we were extremely grateful for the opportunity to swim. The first day also included a volcanic lake, and several large trees (in a rain-forest - amazing!) which were actually very spectacular. In the evening, we went to a pub which was the main drinking hole for all the local Aborigines. Now these people knew how to have a good time. They were hugging each other, dancing on tables, re-enacting tribal ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns October 31st 1989

Cairns is a bit of pilgrimage for backpackers - the town was full of them (us). It was a picturesque little place, although it looked like it was stuck in some kind of time-warp, resembling something that you often see in films about 19th century America. There is plenty to do in Cairns itself, but even more to do around it. I went on excursions to Kuranda and Cape Tribulation and on a boat trip to the Great Barrier Reef. You cannot possibly go to Cairns without going to the reef and, as I didn't fancy a scuba-diving course, some snorkelling was compulsory. Despite the fact that the water is keeping your back cool, it is in reality burning to a crisp. I couldn't lie on my back in bed for three nights and it peeled ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mount Isa October 30th 1989

The journey from Katherine to Cairns was 30 odd hours, but this included a break at a mining town in the middle of no-where called Mount Isa. Apparently, Mount Isa is the largest city in the world in terms of area, covering some 41,000 km2. I tried for a place on a tour of the town, but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) it was fully booked. That came as a bit of a shock as I couldn't imagine that many people would bother going this far out of the way to look round a mining town. Rather than let that stop me, I found an underground museum and the Mining Corporation Exhibition Centre, and I learnt all about copper, zinc and lead mining and the contribution they make to the Australian economy. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Katherine » Katherine Gorge October 28th 1989

After all the early mornings and nights trying to sleep on buses, I was well asleep when the bus arrived at Katherine. If the driver had not tried to find the owner of the lone backpack that was left on the roadside, I would probably have woken up several hundred miles away in Alice Springs or Townsville. The main attraction in Katherine was the gorge and, if you had the energy, the best way to experience it was by canoe. You could spend several days going the full length of the gorge, but due to a lack of camping gear and my general laziness meant that I opted for just one day. That was hard enough on the arms and they were stiff for several days afterwards. The guy who hired out the canoes cheerfully informed ... read more

The Greyhound pass not only included the journey to Kakadu, but a tour round as well. On the way there, we stopped off at some termite mounds. These were huge, easily 10 foot tall, and there were thousands of them everywhere. Upon arrival at Kakadu we went on our tour round. One of the highlights was the Aboriginal paintings at Nourlangie Rock which were literally thousands of years old. Successive generations of Aborigines had 'touched-up' these paintings, until now that is. Elaborate measures had been employed to protect the paintings, as when they fade now, they'll be gone forever. The best way to see Kakadu is by boat, so we booked to go on a boat tour the following day. This meant another early start as the main attraction are the crocs and they tend to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin October 23rd 1989

I arrived back in Darwin and saw the place in a whole new light. Obviously, I was not in the mood to appreciate the place last time, but this time I really got to like the place, very much like Alice Springs. It's not too big, but not too small; not too quiet, but not too noisy; not too cramped, but not too spread out. The weather was beautiful and the general philosophy was to chill-out, relax and enjoy life. Did you know that they consume more alcohol per head in Darwin than anywhere else on earth. That doesn't mean however that it's a town of alcoholics, far from it in fact, drinking is a social thing and Darwin is a very sociable place. I met an Australian girl on the bus called Sarah who was ... read more
