The party split with Carla and JJ following the coast North to Plaza del Toros along the ramblas, and me heading south on the bike to Playa Ferrando. It was late afternoon already by the time I set off on my rented bicycle. I took General Flores out of the old town and a nice lady gave me directions to a short cut through the shopping centre car park which took me to a dirt road. The dirt road ended onto a tarred road where I asked a couple of boys for directions. "Donde esta la Playa Ferrando?" "todo derecho y al fondo y a la derecha" "gracias" "Muy linda" "!!??!?" The road passed a large nature reserve on the left and a large industrial park on the right, at the end of it was ... read more

If you are carrying anything heavy take it Iguasu. Throw it to the garganta de diablo. The bigger the better, but give it all. Smooth water is turned to countless boisterous drops, pummelling and tearing, screaming and shouting. If you have tears la garganta has more... your face, hair and body stream with her tears. The mother of all tears, shuddering sobs, arrested breath and howling cries, unending torrents over and over and over. ..................................................................................................................... I pulled in to Nazareth, was feeling 'bout half past dead I just need some place where I can lay my head "Hey mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?'' He just grinned and shook my hand, ''No'' was all he said Take a load off, Annie Take a load for free Take a load ... read more

The first ascent we made ourselves, from the tarmac to the plane. Decades peeled away Until we plateaued somewhere around 1982. Jets of condensation spurted from the overhead airconditioning ducts creating our own internal cummulus. The hostesses were dressed in duck egg blue, blue eye shadow and pumps blinked in agreeance. JJ and Carla sat together and I was next to a Chinese guy in a tracksuit, the unfashionable kind. The plane seemed to bounce throught he air. Plastic packets of desicated food were served with indifference and we made eating gestures to pass the time. A rainy week had started in Buenos Aires when we left but on arrival at Iguasu we were met with a subtropical embrace. What now? Returning from my post plane piss I see the girls speaking to a dark ... read more

After CAFF was another bar called Humuhaca and then another bar that had no name, but was still open. Linda and Steve had left; Everard and Carla had appeared; JJ disappeared. It was too late to resist now; too early to end. I saw Everard dancing in the front room, talking to a couple outside and leaving with the woman. JJ kissed me before she disappeared. I remember two blue eyes, someone holding my hand and Carla walkiing with me to a car that was not a taxi. And I've travelled round the world from year to year And each one found me aimless, one more year the more for wear And I've been back to South East Asia But the answer sure ain't there But I'm drifting north, to check things out again You ... read more

Me and JJ tumble into the back of the taxi our bags thudding softly behind our perfumed presence. I catch the driver's eye in the mirror. "Sanchez Bustamante 764" CAFF in the worst kept secret in Buenos Aires and houses a resident tango orchestra called "Fernandez Fierro". Linda and Steve are waiting out the front and there is a portly older gentlman standing waiting. Linda and Steve hide behind the telegraph pole as we alight the taxi. "Ola Ola! Who's that!? A couple of strange characters standing on the street....just ignore them, they might go away." JJ's laughter is off the leash and so are lots of kisses and hugs. "We were here a little early and were wondering if this was the right place. It's so deserted." Linda's soft blonde features seemed to twinkle ... read more

Buenos Aires skies couldn´t hold on any longer, and rain pissed down on the streets, washing away the smeared turds and fallen leaves into the gutters. Me and JJ sat damp and blinking in the back seat of the taxi wondering when it would arrive. "Oooh la la" JJ exclaimed as the taxi splashed through the watery roads like a hovercraft. Everard was just arriving as we pulled up. The Melbournian was dressed suitably in black and the three of us marched through the entrance to what looked like a basket ball court with chairs in it. "I´m hungry" "We´ll get you something to eat blossom" JJ said as she eyed the room for a table. A table was found. Everard stared asking stuff about which wine to choose and I spied the menu. Its now Friday and I have been in Buenos Aires for one week but have been swept up in this world of CITA. Classes start at around 12 each day and end at 7.30pm then there is usually a performance at 11 or 12 and a milonga until 4am. There are may hot bods in stretchy pants around here and a clear pecking order of hot young porteño dancers at the top and middle aged americanos at the bottom. The stakes are high to get as much out of this experience as possible by teaming up with another dancer who is as good and hopefully better than you. As you can imagine this equation will at best only produce 50 percent satisfaction. This is where the "taxi dancer" cames in to fulfill the unfulfilled. There are ... read more

Despite what I have said about taxi dancers and their employers I employed a taxi dancer for an advanced gancho class with Fabian Salas and Carolina de Rivera. This was the first advanced class I had taken and I didn't want to burden anyone in the class if my level was not up to scratch, but if it was, I did not want to be burdened with someone who was not. I had my little scrap of blue paper that meant I had a taxi dancer but I wasn't too sure who to give it to and if my daxi dance would find me. Perhpaps I should have worn a red carnation in my hair. Maybe he'll be wearing a blue safari suit. the guy who checks your name came to me and said "Here ... read more

This is not the first time i have found myself consulting the dictionary before I leave the house. It is now the third language that I find myself doing this now. "Celular prepago".....this is what i need today. Last night, trying to explain medium rare I came out with this little Spanish haiku. Hope you like it..... Vuelta y Vuelta un poco hecho y un poco mas pero no quiero sangre ......................................................................................................... No matter how much Spanish has been spoken to me or how much I feign study of it, there is no greater lesson then necessity. "cafe con leche Y un croissant" "¿media lunas?" "Si! media Lunas" Croissants have reached their paeon on perfection here. I shall never eat another croissant in my life now that I know the mild curve of the media luna´s ... read more

Sunday. Nino Bien, our first milonga and the opening night of the Congresso Internacional de Tango Argentine. All the Argentine teachers who will be giving workshops are there and they are introduced by Fabian Salas (of "Tango Lesson" fame). I am seated with te Australian entourage as we watch the performances done by some of the teachers. After this, the milonga starts. People are out in their finest and the dancefloor is crowded. ¿I wonder if I will get a dance tonight? The night goes on and the answer to my wonderings seems to be a resounding NO, when me eye is caught and I´m on the dance floor. The embrace is gentle but close as the floor is crowded and difficult to navigate and not to mention slippery. The first song of the "tanda" comes ... read more
