Thanks for the memories... When I was five I climbed over the fence of the giraffe enclosure at the Dusit Zoo. My babysitter almost had a heart attack!
Jim Thompson... my Dad helped him find the silk villages in Northeast Thailand when he was setting up his businesses. I and others from Dalat School spent three days searching for Jim Thompson when he went missing in the Cameron Highlands. We didn't find him, but in gratitude the Thai Silk Company gave us 400 meters of blue Thai silk to cover our yearbooks. I'm glad you are seeing so much of Bangkok, despite the heat. Oh, and Wat Arun is also known as the Temple of Dawn.
That's amazing What a story, you really have lived quite a life Bob, do you still have your yearbook with the silk? Bangkok is brilliant we only have two days left but still have a palace to see
Kanom Krok... sorry about you being allergic to coconut. Hopefully Zoe can try the kanom krok, I was going to recommend another dessert for you, but everything I thought of has coconut milk. You will have to be careful about Thai food as almost everything contains coconut milk.
Coconut....food of the devil! It's not as bad as we had thought it might be and were enjoying the noodle dishes. Zoe can't have coconut either as even the smell can give me a reaction so if she breathes on me I can react, I'm brilliant at running at the first wiff of the stuff
Glad to see you found the former Railway Hotel... I see it has changed a lot since I vacationed there! I'm glad they kept it up as it is such a colonial gem. Remember to eat kanom krok at the night market!
Excellent recommendation Thank you Bob, it was a fantastic place to have a look round. Haven't made it to the night markets yet, I can't have the kanom krok as it has coconut in and I'm allergic to coconut.
Welcome to the city of my birth!!! Bangkok is crazy interesting. I look forward to reading about your time there and hopefully the rest of Thailand. If you make it to Chiang Mai, take a tour to the top of Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand. I was construction manager for the road and the radar station on top.
What a place to be born It's an amazing city and were loving it, there is so much to do here and it's so clean compared to India. We are going to Chiang Mai so will have a look at the mountain, we also plan to go to the bridge over the Kwai.
Worth every penny....or cent We loved it and were so glad we went, a lot of reviews told of not seeing anything, dirty windows etc but we thought it was worth a go and it was

A truly multi-national mammoth that travels the world visiting places of interest, making new friends and causing mischief wherever he can. With my carer Jo (bless her!) I have scaled castle walls, walked in the footsteps of Roman Emperors and Maharajah's, climbed mountains, contemplated caverns, caves and canyons and attempted the Le Mans 24 hour race on a skateboard! Whether it be climbing a Minaret in Mostar, Paddling in the Arabian Sea, Scaling mountains in Kotor, Feeding chickens in France or Catching trains in India, not... full info
