Wall to wall sunshine - warm It's the last day in Auckland, probably a day too many for sightseeing, but I have relaxing time built in, as going full time for months is impossible - pace yourself. Went into Newmarket to get a few more camping bits and then carried on southwards along the coast. Went through endless suburbs and hit the coast at a little park in some place called St Helier's. It's a wildlife park with a mangrove swamp being re-established. Pohutukawa trees just flowering - animals limited to a few ducks. I carried on southwards and eventually found myself on a bay called Maratai Bay - now out of the suburbs so looked fairly quiet, although there were signs of it being very busy at weekends. Had a cooked lunch for a change ... read more

Sunny and pleasantly warm - breezy. I've not actually been out of Auckland yet, so thought I would. I went westwards to Waitakere Ranges. I started with the Scenic Drive (Highway 24) from Titurangi towards Swanson. Stopped at the Arataki Visitor Centre to look at the view and then walked around the plant Id trail - far too many to remember - and then for a further couple of kilometres through the rainforest. Carried on driving down the Scenic Drive through the jungle, then turned west to some beaches. Went to Piha beach first. There's a stronger wind here and cloudier - lots of surf. The Sunday morning Junior Surf Club was running, but everyone's in wet suits - the sea was much colder than on the east coast. There's a single rock outcrop on the ... read more

Cloudy day with very occasional showers - cooler Time to get organised and do some shopping for bits while the weather's down. Went to Newmarket first to look at camping gear. I thought this would be a major shopping centre, but it just seems to be a High Street without the major concentration of gear shops I was thinking. Carried on to Sylvia Park instead - a major out of town shopping mall (apparently the biggest - or maybe only - one in New Zealand - a little bigger than the Reading Oracle. It's noticeable that there are fewer chain shops and international brands - it gives each place more of it's own feel. There also doesn't seem to be a dominating Tesco's to distort the market. Christmas is in full swing - the mall has ... read more

Cloudy with sunny intervals and pleasantly warm. A problem with being somewhere that's a long way from everywhere else is the importation problem. I suspect that I've bought (and brought along) volumes 1 and 3 in a book series, rather than 1 and 2 - intending to get the third in California later. Of course, a search of Auckland's bookshops revealed that none of the books are available here, and it will take at least 2 months for them to get here. You can see the notices in the shops - 'Shipment just arrived'. I also find that the stylus in my phone has broken - a search for a replacement was eventually successful but I don't think there can be many such phones in the country. There are some more obvious Christmas decorations in the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Rangitoto November 22nd 2007

Cloudy with occasional sunny intervals - warmish. Geological notes on Rangitoto Island in Fieldbook (July 2007 onwards) page 59. Waited for an earlier bus - it was late, so only just made the ferry at 9.15 (had to rush for water and food - there are no supplies on Rangitoto Island). There are only 1 morning and 1 midday ferry. The ferry was full of primary school kids on a summer term day trip. Short journey across the gulf - 25 minutes or so. I climbed up to the summit from the wharf - full of the kids, it could be a Cub hike (except that I don't have to be incharge). Scrubby trees in a'a lava to the sides. The path was gently climbing until it got close to the cone, and then climbed steeply ... read more

A beautiful, warm, sunny Spring day. Went to catch a bus into Auckland city centre to do the tourist route (or as much of it as I can stand). Looking at the timetable last night, you could see that the single bus line goes every half hour until 11a.m., then hourly and stops at 7p.m. At weekends, it's 2 hourly only. I think I'll go and ask if I can hire the car from Friday rather than next Monday, so that I can go to interesting places over the weekend. Having arranged thatm I walked through Auckland to the Sky Tower. The centre is small but quite pleasant - US style 4-way pedestrian crossing every block. The student card worked in the Sky Tower (woo-hoo!) and I got in the lift to the top of this ... read more

The flight onwards to New Zealand was fairly quiet, the only t urbulence was as we passed over the torrential rainstorms still affecting the Phillipines. Woke up in the early morning - around 0130 Hong Kong time 0630 New Zealand time. Still dark outside and everyone elae in the cabin was trying to sleep, so lay still and quiet for an hour or so. About this time you could see the first hints of dawn outside my (eastward, left-hand) window. Beautiful thin line of red above the clouds fading quickly upwards to deep high-altitude blue. When it got lighter, there was an unidentifiable bit of Australian coastline below, with a natural harbour. Breakfast appeared and an hour or so later we landed in Auckland to a grey sky (with occasional clear bits). Immigration and biosecurity (what's ... read more

Very misty and cloudy again After breakfast, packed for the next leg of the journey. Checked out of the hotel (no I hadn't used their minibar!) and waited for the Airport Express shuttle. It came at the advertised tiome and took me to Hong Kong station, where I checked in for the evening flight out, leaving me the rest of the morning and some of the afternoon free. It's nice when these things work - I'll see when my bag goes the other way around the world. My watch strap has started breaking up, and the watch buttons don't work well, so I decided to try a little shopping. Having decided that mall shops that can afford to put 3 things in the window can't afford me (or something like that) I went further into the ... read more

Very cloudy and misty today. I decided to have another day out, so walked down to the ferry terminals again. All the streets and pavements were littered with Filipino girls having picnics. Apparently Sunday is the day off for the 153,000! maids in the area and they take the centre over (the Indonesian maids go to Victoria Park, I understand). I thought I'd better do something about postcards on the way (have any readers received them?) and then waited for ferry to Lamma Island at pier 4. Following a short wait, I got on the ferry to Yung Sue Wan. After a 25 minute trip through the murky harbour - there were many container ships unloading onto barges - I arrived on the island, along with the rest of the crowded ferry. I walked though the ... read more

Warm and sunny again After breakfast, I went over the road to the bus stop via the endless mall. I took the 260 to Repulse Bay - beach weather and it's my standard sort of weekend thing when travelling for long journeys. I had a look at the shrine to Kan Yam - God of Mercy - on the side of the beach. I was full of mosaics and other gods' statues. It was also full of Chinese Tour Groups. I went onto the beach - which was fairly quiet despite the guidebooks warning of crowds at weekends. However, it was occasionally busy with the tour groups who came and looked at the beach and the people on it. I suspect they've never seen a beach, the seaside or people doing beachy things, so they presumably come ... read more
