Middle East » Syria October 19th 2002

Well, we are nearly at the end of out trip, we fly out of Istanbul on Thursday. We have not had nearly long enough here, only really in Jordan and Syria did we feel that we had seen enough. We decided not to spend much time here in Turkey as we would only get frustrated at not being able to see what we want, we'll just have to come back again! Anyway, what have we done since the last blog. We left Jordan and travelled to Damascus, Syria. We spent about 36 hours there, enough to see what we wanted to see. We spent a long morning going round the old city, round the mosque and the neat, narrow back streets. We had a lovely breakfast of these flat bread things with a cheese and egg ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » North » Amman October 9th 2002

We only had a brief time in Jordan, but its been great, mostly. We are currently in Amman and are off to Damascus tomorrow afternoon. The boat across from Nuweiba, Egypt to Aqaba, Jordan was fine, it was a nice, newish catamaran. The trip was so smooth, you hardly felt like you were moving at all. Passport control at aqaba was strange, our passports were collected from us as we got off the boat, then we were bussed to the arrivals hall and had to wait for our names to be called out so we could collect our passports with the visas stamped in them. We had to wait until the end while all the easier Arabic names were called first. We caught a taxi to Wadi Musa (Petra) that evening with a Canadian couple. The ... read more

I think last time we wrote, we were going to take a bus to Hurghada and then take the boat to Sharm El Sheik and on to Dahab. About 10 minutes before the bus left, we changed our minds and bought tickets to Suez instead, with the idea of staying there one night and catching another bus to Dahab, saving ourselves about 200 Egyptian pounds each. It meant more time sat on a bus, but we got to Dahab just after the people that took the expensive option. We didnt have any time to look round Suez, at the canal or anything, as our bus arrived late and the next one left early the following morning. We probably didnt miss much, the parts of Suez we did see werent all that good, its a service town ... read more

Karnak is a place that is hard to describe. Huge. Grand. Visually astounding. Its a massive complex (over 100 acres all up, but you only look at a part of it) which you enter down a short avenue of sphinxes with rams heads and 'holding' statues of Ramses II - remember that avenue of sphinxes from Luxor temple? This is the other end. The further you go in the "main" part, the bigger things get, more and more grand. The columns in the hypostyle hall are awesome, huge round decorated pillars, all the walls have a different story to tell, of battles fought and always won. Even our photos, and we took a lot! wont do the place justice. The main part of the complex is the Precinct of Amun (almost 62 acres!) The most impressive ... read more

The tour we were booked on this morning didnt turn up. After hassling the guy in the hostel for a bit - he wasnt bothered that we had paid already! - he spoke to someone on the phone then wandered into the street and flagged down the first passing minibus full of tourists. This he claimed was our tour, but... still, it was going where we wanted to go. We drove about 7km from Luxor until we reached a bridge over the Nile. Then of course, we had to drive all the way back again as the tombs we were going to are pretty much across from Karnak. We went to the Valley of the Queens first, a bit of a misnomer as there are not only Queens buried here but also high officials and royal ... read more

There is so much to see and do around Luxor, and we took so many photos, that we are going to try and write a separate entry for each place ie Luxor Temple, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens... So here goes, our first day in Luxor... The train ride down wasnt anything special. When we got the tickets we asked for two seats next to each other, but the tickets came back with two seat numbers no where near each other. We questioned this and we assured that they were right next to each other, several times as we did keep asking! So what happened when we got on the train, yup, we were at either end of the carriage. At least we were in the same carriage. Luckily we managed to ... read more

Day One - Getting here From a chilly September morning in the UK to a "warm" 40C in Cairo - it was a long day gett ing here. The flights were all ok (even if the first one did leave Heathrow at 6.30am and we got up way earlier than that!) and got us safely to a hot and dusty Cairo. The ride from the airport to the hostel, by a driver / car organised by the hostel as part of a 'deal', was kind of fast and hair-raising. Horns blared non-stop...lane markings are ignored as is anyone else who may be in the space you want to occupy...three lane roads mean at least five lanes of cars...and as for speed limits, what an alien idea! Still, we got to the hostel and we given a ... read more

DAY SEVEN It was just one of those days. There was no power in the hostel when we got up so we had to do everything by torchlight. Then we got all messed up by a strike on the trains. We bought our tickets and were told platform and time, but no train came. Everyone we asked - security guards, information desk, ticket office - all told us different things, until we finally found out about the strike! Not that anyone though to put up signs or make an announcement! Finally we got a train to Segovia at 10am. Given that its a two hour ride, and the return trains are at 2.55pm or 8.55pm, we didn't have long once we did make it to Segovia. The ride out was ok, busy and noisy with a ... read more

DAY FOUR The old part of Atocha Station is a neat classical, Victorian style building, huge with a glassed roof, full of tropical plants and misters. We had plenty of time to look round before our train to Toledo this morning. Toledo was a fascinating city. We spent our time wandering around the old town, entering through the main gate in the wall. We went to the Alcazar first, the old fort / palace, a neat building but the museum inside was mainly military with little on the history of the building and what it had been used for. Next was the Taller del Moro where we could look round three rooms of a 14th century Mudejar palace (Mudejar refers to architecture etc. built by Moorish craftsmen under Christian rule). There was some excellent carvings in ... read more

DAY ONE Late. Everything. All morning. The taxi was late picking us up. The bus was late leaving Southampton for the airport. The plane was late leaving Heathrow for Madrid. We couldn't find the hostel we were after either once we got into the centre of the old city. What a good start to the week. Still, we did find a place to stay, double room with en suite for €36 per night, what seems to be the going rate at the moment around here. Despite the early start, we headed out again straight away, walking not far to the Plaza Mayor. This is a large square surrounded by all buildings from the 17-18th century. We found ourselves coming back time and time again during our stay. There is a covered walkway all around the edge ... read more
