More diving of course. Friday we had a morning off and went for a long walk along the old inner ring road and back along the beach. The afternoons dive was back at Paradise Reef for a navigation dive. That went well, and we even had time after all the compass work and counting kicks to just swim round and look at the reef and fish. That was our last course dive, and we are now advanced open water divers. Saturday we had a day off from diving, but didn’t sit back and relax. We went into Avarua in the morning for a look around the big Saturday market. Plenty of fruit and veges, along with all the touristy stuff. We got some fruit and then stocked up on other food at the supermarket. We tried ... read more

We’ve done five dives now; one was called off because of rough seas. The first was a wreck called the Mataora, outside Avarua harbour. The wreck was broken up, and in places was little more than a pile of twisted metal. We didn’t see heaps of fish, but it was a good and interesting dive. The water was reasonably warm (24C) and visibility was good. We saw angel fish, damsel fish, some big lionfish, cod, crown of thorns, triggerfish, rainbow wrasse, threadfin butterfly fish, anemone fish, clownfish, checkerboard wrasse, blue spotted grouper and trumpet fish. The coral around the wreck was very plain, but appeared to be alive. We hung around town (Avarua), having lunch at Trader Jacks, waiting for the second dive, only to be told that it had been called off due to rough ... read more

London to Rarotonga in one go is a long flight. We stopped for a few hours in LA, what a hassle! We had to go through customs and passport control just to get to the transit lounge. Mind you, it wasn’t really a transit lounge, we did kind of enter the US and then leave again, we could have taken off into the night if we’d wanted to. Next stop was Papeete; we always seem to stop in Tahiti to change planes, never to visit. Finally we made it to Rarotonga, landing early Sunday morning. We were met in a van and were out at the hostel (Backpackers International Hostel, West Coast, reasonable discount for staying longer than a week, basic but friendly) by 8am. Even at that time it was hot and humid. We went ... read more

Well, this is it, the end of our trip. We arrived back in the UK on Saturday morning to grey skys and drizzle. I cant remember right now where we last wrote from , so I'll work my way backwards and when you come to somewhere you recognise, you can stop reading! We spent the last week in Johannesburg staying with a friend. We hired a car for the week, making it so much easier and cheaper to get around. We went out to a couple of animal parks in the Gauteng region, and saw plenty of deer and antelope, and more lions and rhino. We also went to another cheetah research and breeding centre, this one better organised and funded than the one in Namibia. But we didnt get to play with the cheetah here! ... read more

As you can see we have reached the other end of Africa now. South Africa has been great (so far), we are really enjoying all we are seeing and doing. Its weird not being with the truck and all our "new" friends anymore though. We crossed from Namibia into SA and headed down to Stellenbosch. A lovely town, full of well looked after Cape Dutch style buildings, and of course vineyards. We did a tour round four wineries, sampling well at each. All the wines were good, some were just better than others. We did get a couple of bottles, but of course we have drunk them already! From there it was a short drive down to Cape Town, in the rain! Table Mountain could barely be seen, and we certainly couldnt see the top. We ... read more

Next stop was Windhoek, Namibia, our second to last country on the trans. We spent a short few hours in the city as we were all eager to be on our way to Etosha. Windhoek was a great city, clean, friendly, well laid out and ful of the things we are used to in our other lives. It also suddenly seemed expensive! Etosha National Park was great! We didnt get to see a lot of predators, but we did see hundreds of zebra, giraffe, gemsbok (Oryx), springbok and impala. At the waterholes there would be hundreds of animals mixing and drinking. We did see an African Wild Cat and a lioness with two small cubs. At the campsites (very nice) there was a waterhole where we sat for hours in the evenings. Here we saw a ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Okavango Delta June 2nd 2003

From Victoria Falls we headed into Botswana and the Okavango Delta. We went on a three night Mokoro (canoe) trip into part of the delta. It wasnt quite how we imagined it would be. We were poled to a camp on an "island" and did morning and afternoon walks from there. The water was really low, the rains have only just begun in Angola and the water hasnt reached the delta yet. We saw the usual giraffe, impala, jackel, badgers and elephants, some up quite close, and remember that we were on foot. We also went to a hippo pool one evening and watched 13 or so hippo watching us. We are hoping that we finally got that big toothy grin hippo photo! Not sure why this email was so short, we had a good time ... read more

Africa » Zimbabwe » Victoria Falls May 28th 2003

The train from Bulawayo to Vic Falls was ok, nothing flash, just two small bunks in a very small room, an unlockable door and a window blind that kept shooting up. Still, it made a change from having to drive on the truck all that way. We arrived at Vic Falls at 7am, tired and hungry, to find that bread wasn't available anywhere in town that day. We had a great, but expensive, time there. I went on an amazing microlight flight above the falls, we both did the "Sundowner Cruise" and watched the falls from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian side, getting really wet in the process. We also bought more souvenirs and sent more parcels back to NZ. The falls are really impressive, especially now as the river is about full. They fall into ... read more

Harare was a great city, suddenly really civilised! We went to the movies a couple of times as they were only 35c US. At that price it doesnt matter if the movies are rubbish! We both saw 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding', Colin went to see 'XXX' while I saw 'Below'. We went round the National Art Gallery, some good works, most of them up for sale, and a room full of old tribal works from drums and baskets to axes and masks. None of this stuff was for sale, although you could buy replicas in the shop. That was about all we had time for, shame really, but we had better things to move on to. Next stop was Antelope Park, a private game reserve with a lion breeding program. We got to play with ... read more

Africa » Mozambique May 17th 2003

MOZambique 17.05.03 From the idle beach life of Malawi we spent a day in Lilongwe then crossed Mozambique. The road we drove along was the worst for ages, back to West African standards. We couldnt even leave the road for toilet stops because of the risk of land mines. We bushcamped on a piece of dirt just off the side of the road that had an abandoned shack on. We woke to find ourselves surrounded by shy kids from the houses scattered all around us. We'd pulled off in the dark and hadnt been able to see a thing. We didnt stop in at apart from overnight in Mozambique, another country that we'll have to come back to, but drove straight to Harare, Zimbabwe.... read more
