Old soldier's thoughts on Vietnam I'm an old soldier who served two one-year tours in Vietnam, the first with a rifle company in the 1st Infantry Division in '65-66 and the second with the 5th Special Forces group in '67-68. Vietnam is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with some of the most beautiful women to be found anywhere.
One of the great tragedies of American history is that we managed to spend nearly seven years fighting the Vietnamese people. Communism would have died a natural and well-deserved death in due course, as it has everywhere but in that one remaining horrible outpost North Korea. Of course, we didn't know that in 1965 when we began to really escalate the conflict.
I'd like to go back before kick off; unfortunately, it's getting hard for me to around these days, due mainly to getting up rather badly shot up during my last tour in SVN.
I couldn't be happier to Vietnam at peace and doing well today.

Sorry about bad luck I was sorry to hear about the bad luch with your money Hong Ha. Something like that can really affect a holiday. I have been enjoying your wonderful blog, even when I have been to a place that you write about, it brings back so many memories. Last time I was in Da Lat the lake was empty becuase they were making it bigger. It was so strange not to have that central point, but it did make me go out and see more of the countryside.
Thanks for your great blogs.
Hi Hong Ha,
How was the crocodile & ostrich meat tasted?
The water at Ho Cho Hot Spring is very clean & would be lovely to have a dip :) The fish noodles soup looked delicious as well.
Thank you for showing us the beauty of this part of Vietnam, a hidden gem :)
Take care when you ride a motorbike.

Hand paintings on Ceramic tile Hi, I chanced upon your blog while researching for ceramic tile painting. I am impressed with Hanoi Bat Trang's ceramic painting heritage.
Presently, I am sourcing these paintings from China. I am interested to source paintings of different cultural and heritage, maybe Hanoi.
Is it worthwhile to make a trip there? Cheers, Mark
Hi, Hong Ha,
Reading your Phnom Penh write up brings back a lot of sweet memory of my visit to this city. I was facinated by the snack of little snail with chilies but didn't dare to try. I remembered the tuk-tuk ride to visit Killing Field was very very bumpy.
I can see Phnom Penh has developed a lot from your photos :)
Happy Tet Hi Hong Ha,
Great to hear from you & to read about your trip to Saigon during Tet. Your nephew is such a handsome boy & he is so chubby :)
This lunar new year is the year of snake in chinese lunar calendar (same as the Vietnamese lunar new year sign). I started cooking pineapple jam on the eve & baking pineapple tart (one of my favourites) the rest of the day. This year my brother bought a pot luck (from chinese restaurant) consisted of all the goodies like prawns, abalone, scallops, chicken meat, fish, duck meat etc. Less cooking.
Hope to read about your trip to Phnom Pehn.
Take care.

Ha Noi Cuisine I like Ha Noi cuisine, special "Phở gà (chicken)". You can find it in every streets, but I think "Phở Thìn, Phở Bát Đàn, Phở Lý Quốc Sư" are the best. If you like Steamed Rolled Rice Pancake, Ba Hoanh Steamed Rolled Rice Pancake or Thanh Tri Steamed Rolled Rice Pancake is the best choice. Dried Beef Salad in Bo Ho is the best. You know, they are quiet cheap ($1 - $2) and easy to find them. Come and enjoy!
The fermentation at the fish sauce factory doesn't look very appealing but the final product (fish sauce) makes cooking delicious.
Thank you for this great write up & the beautiful sunset photos at Ha Long Bay (my favourite & brings back a lot of memory to me).
