South America » Uruguay » East » Punta del Este February 10th 2023

Nothing on the shore excursion menu had piqued my curiosity enough to spend my money, so all there was for me to do in Punta Del Este, Uruguay on Friday, February 10, 2023 was to hop on the tender and take a ride into one of Uruguay’s most popular resort towns. Allegedly, the “jet set” gravitates here to party, but the tender left the MS Volendam passengers near the blue-collar, working portion of the city – the fish market. I suppose the beautiful people don’t stray too far from the runway – either definition of runway will suffice. With a panoramic tour of Montevideo, Uruguay slated for the following day, I hoped to find my refrigerator magnet in Punta Del Este. Other than the fish markets, I didn’t find much for sale in the neighborhood, so, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut February 8th 2023

It was an arbitrary shot for me to define where the subject of Antarctica ended and that of Argentina began. Both transpired in the southern Atlantic Ocean and both occurred under less than pleasant weather conditions. All I know is that our stop in Falkland Islands had been cancelled because of high seas, and we spent three days on the oceans blue. We had not set foot on solid ground for nine days. That stint gave me cause to admire the crews of yore like those of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria and the passengers of the Mayflower even more greatly than I did before. After all, they didn’t even have a comedian to entertain them in the evening, and I doubt that cheesecake was on the menu! By the time I had finished my ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica February 7th 2023

The Antarctic Experience Day 1 The Daily Program had an earlier start time than usual on February 1, 2023 – 7:00 AM. The entry was “Volendam Cruises Dallman Bay, Antarctica!” Yup, we had finally arrived at the first of the two destinations that led me to take this cruise in the first place, the other being the Amazon River, and this was the first of four days we would be cruising the waters of Antarctica. All our cruising would take place on the Antarctic Peninsula – on the north side of the island continent and that portion closest to the southern tip of South America. Now that I think about it for a nanosecond, where can one go from Antarctica BUT north??? The Daily Program listed the geographic locations where we would be cruising and the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 29th 2023

Most of our passage from Punta Arenas, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina through the Cockburn and Beagle Channels was made under the cover of darkness. The Beagle Channel was named after the ship that carried English naturalist, Charles Darwin around the world. Most of the shore excursions include a disclaimer that bad weather is not cause for a refund, so I held out for a weather forecast before I spent $164.95 on the shore excursion, “The Train to the End of the World.” By the time I was ready to commit, however, the tour was sold out. I initially asked to be placed on the waiting list, but, as the time drew nearer, I requested to be removed from the waiting list and purchased the shore excursion, “Lake Escondido Scenic Alpine Drive.” Since I have been mystified ... read more

By the time I had finished coffee in my cabin and had made my way to the Lido Café for breakfast on Thursday, January 26, 2023, the ship already had made its way into one of the Chilean fjords. So just what is a fjord? The Oxford English Dictionary says, "a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, as in Norway and Iceland, typically formed by submergence of a glaciated valley," while Wikipedia says, "a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier." The common threads in the several definitions I examined seems to be long, narrow, deep and glaciated. Over the course of the next 48 hours or so, we would see many fjords as we passed Laguna San Rafael National Park, Torres del Paine National Park and ... read more

South America » Chile » Aisén » Puerto Chacabuco January 25th 2023

NOTE: Please forgive the delay. I've been without Internet for the better part of two weeks and will do my best to get caught up ASAP. With only one night at sea between Puerto Montt, Chile and Puerto Chacabuco, Chile, the ship surely wasn’t expected to arrive at zero-dark-thirty on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Indeed, MS Volendam was not scheduled to set anchor for tendering operations in Puerto Chacabuco until 10:00 AM with the last tender departing the pier at 5:30 PM. That made for a short day of tourism ashore. Puerto Chacabuco, Chile is situated in the Patagonia Region of South America. Patagonia comprises the southern section of the Andes Mountains with lakes, fjords, temperate rainforests, and glaciers in the west; and deserts, plains and grasslands in the east. The Pacific Ocean lies to the ... read more

I have been anxiously awaiting our visit to Puerto Montt, Chile for a unique reason. When I began my tour of Spain in 2022, I was sent from Madrid, Spain to Seville, Spain on a high-speed train along with two other members of our tour group to join the main tour group in Seville. One was a mining engineer from Australia while the other was a chemical engineer from Chile. ‪Armin, from Chile, and I hit it off directly as he was trying to improve his English diction, to expand his vocabulary and to unravel some of the craziness of the English language, such as left (remaining) and left (direction), hops (jumps) and hops (ingredient in beer) and many, many more. I, on the other hand, needed to brush some more dust off my rudimentary Spanish ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region January 22nd 2023

Our port-of-call on Sunday, January 22, 2023 was Isla Robinson Crusoe, Chile, the foundation for the book Robinson Crusoe. There are no shore excursions available for this port. There are about 700 inhabitants. Why, then, make this a port-of-call? That’s a good question with only one logical answer – it’s famous. Somewhere along the line, I didn’t have a requirement (or seize the opportunity) to read the book Robinson Crusoe, but it is based on a true story. Alexander Selkirk (1676 – 13 December 1721) was a Scottish sailor who was an unruly youth and joined buccaneering voyages to the South Pacific during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714). One such expedition was on Cinque Ports, captained by 21-year-old Lieutenant Thomas Stradling. When Stradling's ship, Cinque Ports, stopped to resupply at the uninhabited Juan Fernández ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » San Antonio January 20th 2023

A one-night sail transported us to San Antonio (Santiago), Chile for our Friday, January 20, 2023 day in port. I had signed up for the “Easy San Antonio & Villages by the Sea” Optional Excursion which began on board at the World Stage at 0830. Given that I usually have my coffee delivered at 0700 and set out for breakfast at the Lido Café about 0800, an 0830 meeting time wouldn’t allow much time for breakfast, so I opted to have room service deliver a full breakfast, as I had done once before under the same circumstances. Over the decades, Holland America has perfected the art of moving people quickly and efficiently. Upon arrival at the World Stage, each participant is given a colored sticker with a number to affix to his/her shirt. My sticker was ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena January 19th 2023

We departed General San Martin (Pisco), Peru in the afternoon of Monday, January 16, 2023 but didn’t arrive at our next port, Coquimbo (La Serena), Chile, until the morning of Thursday, January 19, 2023. That’s three nights and two days of sailing the ocean blue; however, there were some interesting things to occupy our time at sea. I don’t know how strictly ships’ routes over the vast expanse of the oceans are regulated (probably less than aircraft and that’s, probably, a good thing), but the captain announced just as we had left the pier that he had obtained permission for us to pass near a prehistoric rock art formation, or geoglyph, known as the Paracas Candelabra, or the Candelabra of the Andes. I’m not a prehistoric art enthusiast but do find them interesting and worth a ... read more
