Right Off the Bat, I Spotted a Mural at the Tender Pier
I have been anxiously awaiting our visit to Puerto Montt, Chile for a unique reason. When I began my tour of Spain in 2022, I was sent from Madrid, Spain to Seville, Spain on a high-speed train along with two other members of our tour group to join the main tour group in Seville. One was a mining engineer from Australia while the other was a chemical engineer from Chile. ‪Armin, from Chile, and I hit it off directly as he was trying to improve his English diction, to expand his vocabulary and to unravel some of the craziness of the English language, such as left (remaining) and left (direction), hops (jumps) and hops (ingredient in beer) and many, many more. I, on the other hand, needed to brush some more dust off my rudimentary Spanish skills. I included his picture in a couple of my blog entries for the tour of Spain. We had exchanged contact information before he returned to Madrid several days before my tour concluded. After I returned to America in October 2022, I Googled his address and found that he lived near Puerto Montt. We exchanged a few emails, and in one of the more recent

ones he said, “I hope to take you at 8:00 from Puerto Montt.” Yes, his English is much better than my Spanish.

Our communications from the outset of making the discovery of the proximity of Puerto Montt to his home has been by email, and email is great as long as the communication is not time sensitive. I tried text messaging a couple of times during the cruise (after my international plan had activated), but he did not respond. On Monday morning, I learned I had an error in the country code configuration in my contact list. I figured it was operator error! He, obviously, knows the layout of the port facilities better than I so I adopted a “wait and see” posture and thought I would call directly if we didn’t rendezvous straight away. My tender didn’t arrive at the dock until about 0840. I no more than entered the lobby of the passenger terminal, and there he was. We made our way to his pickup (a new word he learned during our day together) and set out for his favorite coffee shop – a ritual we had adopted in Spain. After coffee, he showed me around his

little community of Puerto Varas, Chile.

Puerto Varas (37,561 people), also known as "La Ciudad de las Rosas" or “The City of Roses,” is 12 miles from the city of Puerto Montt and sits on the shores of Llanquihue Lake, the second largest lake in Chile. The lake has an area of 332 square miles and is 21.75 miles long. That’s a big lake by just about anybody’s standards. The conical Volcán Osorno (Osorno Volcano) and the snowcapped peaks of Mount Calbuco and Mount Tronador are clearly visible from the lakefront (and the coffee shop). After coffee and a drive around town, we drove to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, the oldest national park in Chile and home to Petrohué River Waterfalls. Unfortunately, occasional drizzle dampened the day and clouds frequently obscured the views of the surrounding mountains and Volcán Osorno; however, the precipitation didn’t dampen our zeal. We stopped for lunch at one of Armin’s favorites where he knew the owners quite well, Carne & Papa – Meat & Potatoes. I selected the Cazuela de Vacuno (casserole of beef), a traditional Chilean dish of vegetables and meat served in a broth while Armin ordered Pastel de Choclo (corn cake or corn pie), a South American dish made from sweetcorn or choclo. After lunch, we returned to Puerto Montt where Armin showed me some more of his community before returning to the tender dock. The day was too short, but we had a few hours together that neither of us really expected when we parted company in Spain back in May 2022.

After supper, I wanted some time to reflect upon the day and have, on occasion, stopped in the casino for some “no brainer” time at the penny slot machines. In previous visits to the casino, I had found one that offers a $.30 spin. It usually doesn’t pay anything big but pays enough to provide some cheap entertainment at $5.00 to $10.00 an hour – much cheaper than the cocktail lounge. Today was my lucky day. Not only did I get to spend the day with Armin, but I hit up my favorite machine for $154.55. Free spins, free spins and more free spins. That unexpected bonanza should put a dent in the gambling expenses for the entire trip although I realistically expect to end up on the negative side of the ledger by the time
